And, he will be one of the brightest stars at this weekend\u2019s Riverfront Blues &amp; BBQ Festival (Tubman-Garrett Park, Wilmington, Delaware, 302-576-2139, <a href=\"http:\/\/riverfrontbluesfestde.com\/\"><span class=\"s2\">http:\/\/riverfrontbluesfestde.com\/<\/span><\/a>) with a performance on August 7.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In 2013, Birchwood won the world-renowned International Blues Challenge, beating out 125 other musicians from the U.S. and abroad. He also took home the Albert King Guitarist of the Year Award. It didn\u2019t take long for Alligator Records president Bruce Iglauer to offer Birchwood a contract.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cBruce heard me play at IBC (International Blues Challenge) in Memphis,\u201d said Birchwood, during a phone interview Tuesday afternoon from his home in Tampa, Florida.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI gave him some of my tracks to listen to. I was just hoping to get his opinion on them. Instead, he asked me to make an album for his record label.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">His album, \u201cDon\u2019t Call No Ambulance,\u201d which was his third overall and first for Alligator Records, is a fully realized vision of contemporary blues. Birchwood received both the Blues Music Award and Living Blues Critics\u2019 Award for Best Debut Album Of 2014 for this album.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI think \u2018Don\u2019t Call No Ambulance\u2019 is similar to my first two albums in the sense that it is not similar,\u201d said Birchwood. \u201cWe play original blues music based on a lot of different styles of blues music. There is a lot of variety &#8212; a fresh array of blues.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Birchwood was born in 1985 in Orlando, Florida. He first grabbed a guitar at age 13 and soon became proficient at mimicking what he heard on the radio. But the popular grunge rock, hip-hop and metal of the 1990s didn\u2019t move him, and he quickly grew bored. Then he heard Jimi Hendrix and by 17 was deep into the blues, listening to Albert King, Freddie King, Albert Collins, Muddy Waters, Lightnin\u2019 Hopkins and especially Buddy Guy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWhen I was young, I decided I wanted to play an instrument and landed on guitar,\u201d said Birchwood. \u201cI was bored with just hearing the stuff on the radio in the late 90s. When I heard Jimi Hendrix for the first time, I was blown away. It was like a spaceship landed. Then, I started listening to Hendrix\u2019 roots &#8212; Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Buddy Guy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cBuddy Guy was one of my favorites. He was coming on tour to the House of Blues in Orlando when I was 17 and living there. I went to his show and was completely floored. I said &#8212; what I\u2019m feeling coming off this stage is what I want to do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Birchwood has a new record on the horizon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI\u2019m writing all the time,\u201d said Birchwood. \u201cWe\u2019re just finishing our next record. I\u2019ve been cutting it at Phat Planet Studio in Orlando. It\u2019s a great studio with a lot of great gear. I have eight tracks done and three or four to go. Suter Band, the Bayou Brothers, Big James &amp; the Chicago Playboys, Tommy Alderson Band, John Nemeth, the Nick Moss Band, Michael Ledbetter, and Ruthie Foster.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The performers on August 7 will be Selwyn Birchwood Band, James Day &amp; the Fish Fry, Samantha Fish and Tab Benoit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Birchwood will also be performing on August 13 at the Sellersville Theater (24 West Temple Avenue, Sellersville, 215-257-5808, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.st94.com\/\"><span class=\"s2\">www.st94.com<\/span><\/a>). Ticket prices for this show are $21.50 and $33.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1389 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/brother-moses-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"brother moses\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/>Even though the band Brother Moses has a Biblical sounding name, the band has more Razorback in its DNA than any Biblical influence. Brother Moses, which will be performing August 4 at The Pharmacy (1300 South 18th Street, Philadelphia, <a href=\"https:\/\/thepharmacyphilly.org\/events\/\"><span class=\"s2\">https:\/\/thepharmacyphilly.org\/events\/<\/span><\/a>), was formed a few years ago at the home of the Razorbacks &#8212; the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Brother Moses &#8212; James Lockhart (guitar, lead vocals), Moses Gomez (guitar), Matthew Heckmann (bass), John-Lewis Anderson (guitar, keyboards) &#8212; began in 2014 when Lockhart and Gomez were students at the University of Arkansas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0\u201cWe all are from Arkansas,\u201d said Lockhart, during a full band phone interview Tuesday afternoon from Kingsport, Tennessee. \u201cMoses and I grew up in the same hometown &#8212; Van Buren. Matt grew up in Fayetteville and J.L. grew up in Lavaca. We all met at the University of Arkansas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cMe and Moses were trying to do a band. J.L. and Matt were a few years ahead of us and they had their own band. After about a year-and-a-half, we convinced them to join our band.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Brother Moses released its first EP \u201cThank You For Your Patience\u201d a few years ago and followed with \u201cLegends,\u201d which will come out on Missing Piece Records on August 26.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe started making \u2018Thank You For Your Patience\u2019 our sophomore year in college,\u201d said Gomez. \u201cIn our house, we had a room that was a studio\/music room. When Matthew came in, we did the mixing and pushed it out. Me and James are still in school. The other two guys are done with school.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cLegends\u201d is being featured on this tour but will become \u201cofficial\u201d when Brother Moses has an \u201cEP Release Party\u201d on September 1 at George\u2019s Majestic Lounge in Fayetteville.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe made \u2018Legends\u2019 in October 2014,\u201d said Lockhart. \u201cWe recorded it at our producer Raymond Richardson\u2019s studio in Rancho Park, California.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Anderson said, \u201cI had a friend who was pen pals with Raymond Richardson and he hooked us up with each other.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Gomez said, \u201cWhen we went to L.A. to make the EP. James and J.L. James had friends in the city to stay with. Moses and I stayed at my brother\u2019s in Lancaster while we were there. We had a 45-minute commute to the studio every morning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cAt least half of that was spent in gridlocked traffic on the 405. We\u2019re from Arkansas so we weren\u2019t used to that kind of traffic. It was a taste of real California.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cLegends\u201d is a good marker of the band\u2019s progress from the days of its first EP.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cFor me, the difference between the two EPs is the energy in the songs,\u201d said Heckmann. \u201cWe\u2019ve been playing the songs from \u2018Legends\u2019 live for a year now. There\u2019s a frantic energy that we really tap into onstage and people really get into it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Lockhart said, \u201cOn the first EP, I was directly writing a lot about what was going on in my life. The new EP is more abstract. We\u2019re in the process of writing songs for our next record now. It\u2019s still in the early stages &#8212; brainstorming a lot of ideas.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">For Lockhart, \u201cLegends\u201d was somewhat of a family affair. The EP cover shows a man holding a partially-eaten apple while another apple with an arrow through it sits on top of his head.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThat was my grandfather John Anderson,\u201d said Lockhart. \u201cHe\u2019s been a real inspiration.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Video link for Brother Moses &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/98tPng-IOSA\"><span class=\"s2\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/98tPng-IOSA<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The show at The Pharmacy, which will start at 8 p.m., will also feature the Mud Guppies. I only do about four band shows each year so this is a pretty special event. For this show, I\u2019m going to do a big chunk of \u2018Dark Side.\u2019 I\u2019ll close with five \u2018Dark Side\u2019 songs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In 2011, Fahl recorded her own version of one of rock\u2019s all-time classics \u2014 Pink Floyd\u2019s \u201cDark Side of the Moon.\u201d Fahl re-interpreted the songs on an album she titled \u201cFrom the Dark Side of the Moon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">For many artists, the task of re-inventing songs from an album as iconic as \u201cDark Side of the Moon\u201d could have been too much of a challenge. Not so for Fahl who crafted a disc that honored its roots but established an identity all its own.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cAfter making the Sony classical album (\u201cClassics for a New Century\u201d), I wanted to do something that was fun,\u201d said Fahl. \u201cAn independent filmmaker I knew wanted to use me in a performance piece. I wanted to do something that I didn\u2019t have the ability to write.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThat\u2019s when I decided to do the \u2018Dark Side\u2019 recording. It\u2019s like a classical piece of music. I did not intend to make a cover record. It\u2019s my version and it doesn\u2019t sound at all like Pink Floyd\u2019s version. But, a lot of die-hard Pink Floyd fans have responded well. They like the album \u2014 and my live versions of the songs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0Fahl is a singer, a guitarist and a songwriter. More than anything, Fahl is a performer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cPerforming is my primary form of self-expression,\u201d said Fahl. \u201cWhen I do a show, I want to take you on a complete journey. I want to transform you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Fahl has been doing just that for years \u2014 ever since her days with the band October Project starting in the early 1990s. Once you\u2019ve heard Fahl sing, from that point on when you hear a song by Fahl, you immediately know who is singing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThis show is a completely different show than my solo show,\u201d said Fahl. \u201cMy solo shows are very intimate. With a full band, it always has to be more structured. I still try to keep the rapport with the audience. I still talk quite a lot.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cMy band is from Syracuse. Mark Doyle, who is my music director, plays guitar and piano. He\u2019s based in Syracuse and I asked him to put a band together for me. We have a drummer, a bass player and a keyboard player. They can all rehearse easily in Syracuse and I go there when I need to rehearse with them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The band does not figure in Fahl\u2019s upcoming recording plans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI\u2019m in the studio right now working on a new record,\u201d said Fahl. \u201cThis record will be basically done by next week and I\u2019m going for an early fall release. I\u2019m doing a folky, ambient classical record. It has a lot of ambient guitar, cello and a little me on guitar.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Many of Fahl\u2019s fans have been with her ever since her time with October Project which lasted from 1991-1996.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cOctober Project had a large body of work and I still perform some of those songs in my live show,\u201d said Fahl. \u201cIf I don\u2019t do some of those songs, fans get upset. It also features an unprecedented freshness and energy &#8212; a refreshing sound that is invigorating and entertaining.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A big reason the album sounds go good is the way the album was recorded. TTNG &#8212; Tim Collis (guitar), Chris Collis (drums), Henry Tremain (vocals, bass) &#8212; recorded the new disc last year in Chicago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe recorded it in December 2015,\u201d said Tim Collis, during a phone interview Wednesday afternoon as the band travelled from Nashville to a show in Atlanta.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe finished touring North America and went straight to Chicago. We recorded the album at Electrical Audio with Greg Norman as the producer. We liked quite a few records Greg had produced for other bands. They had a good energy and live feel and that was what we wanted. Our last album was too much of a production effort. With \u2018Disappointment Island,\u2019 we set up live in the studio. We were in the studio for 14 days and it was all recorded live to tape. It was the first time with this band that we\u2019ve done an analog recording.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Recording analog is challenging because, unlike with digital recording, mistakes can\u2019t be corrected by a computer. Recording live creates a state of \u201cdouble jeopardy\u201d because individual parts can\u2019t be replaced. Each take is all-or-nothing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThere is a little extra nervousness when you do it this way,\u201d said Collis. \u201cYou have the feeling that you have to get it right in one go &#8212; which isn\u2019t actually the case. We were pretty anxious going in. But, we were well-rehearsed and ready. It was quite a triumph. It sounds like a well-recorded record with a lot of energy in it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">TTNG, which was previously known as \u201cThis Town Needs Guns,\u201d has been around for a decade-and-a-half and has undergone several lineup changes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe started in Oxford (England) in late 2003,\u201d said Collis, the only original member left. \u201cWe never really played that much in Oxford. We did a few things and then started branching out &#8212; to northern England and Scotland and eventually to London. This current lineup has been together for about three-and-a-half years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cTTNG has played Philadelphia three times. It\u2019s one of our favorite places in America. This will be our first time to play The Foundry. Doll Skin\u2019s four members are each a year apart with the oldest being 19 and the youngest 16. The talented rockers from Phoenix, are touring behind an impressive debut album titled \u201cIn Your Face (Again)\u201d on EMP Music Group.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Arizona-based quartet definitely rocks hard \u2014 and definitely is all girls. Drummer Meghan Herring is the eldest and she is just 19. The lineup also includes bassist Nicole Rich (18), guitarist Alex Snowden (17) and vocalist Sydney Dolezal (16).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The band\u2019s music draws from a variety of influences \u2014 rock, punk, hard rock, pop, alt-rock and metal. The four musicians may be young but they play like polished veterans. They also have benefited from the production work and guidance of Megadeth bassist Dave Ellefson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe met when we were studying at the School of Rock in Scottsdale,\u201d said Rich, during a phone interview Wednesday afternoon as the band travelled through Iowa en route to a show in Madison, Wisconsin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cMeghan got the four of us together to compete in a local battle of the bands called Rock Revolution at Desert Mountain High School in Scottsdale. We all were going to different high schools while Sydney was still in eighth grade. I was at Chaparral High School in Scottsdale.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">But, while her classmates were cheering on the Firebirds\u2019 sports teams and getting involved in other school activities at Chapparal, Rich was rocking hard and laying down solid bass lines for her bandmates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI always played bass,\u201d said Rich. \u201cWhen I first started, I wanted to play drums but my parents said they were too loud. I was 13 when I started playing bass.\u00a0 My biggest influences as bass players are Flea, Victor Wooten and Lyn Z from Mindless Self Indulgence.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Ellefson, one of the most respected metal\/hard rock bassists in the world, also has been an influence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe first met Dave Ellefson at Rock Revolution,\u201d said Rich. \u201cHe was a guest judge and gave us a perfect score of 10. We watched a video of him watching us and he was in awe of us. After the judging was over, he asked to do a picture of us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Ellefson developed appreciation for Doll Skin\u2019s music right from the first time he saw the foursome play.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cHe kept up with our local shows,\u201d said Rich. \u201cA year later after another Rock Revolution battle of the bands, he asked to manage us. And, he also became our producer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cAt the School of Rock, we all took lessons, did performances and played in the house band.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cOnce we started playing together as a band, everything felt right. There is just a natural chemistry between us &#8211;and a good sense of humor. We were friends before we joined a band together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe put out our first EP \u2018In Your Face\u2019 last October and just released our first album \u2018In Your Face (Again).\u2019 We haven\u2019t gotten back in the studio but we\u2019ve been back writing.
