{"id":21001,"date":"2016-09-01T09:48:05","date_gmt":"2016-09-01T13:48:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?p=21001"},"modified":"2016-09-02T16:10:42","modified_gmt":"2016-09-02T20:10:42","slug":"on-stage-howard-jones-loves-his-us-fans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?p=21001","title":{"rendered":"On Stage: Howard Jones loves his US fans"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"p1\"><em>Plus: a does of &#8216;fast-food&#8217; metal you have to see to believe<\/em><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>By Denny Dyroff<\/strong>,\u00a0<\/span><em><span class=\"s1\">Staff Writer, The Times<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1607\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1607\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1607\" src=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/howard-jones-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Howard Jones is playing just four dates in the U.S. \u2014 including one in the Delaware Valley.\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1607\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Howard Jones is playing just four dates in the U.S. \u2014 including one in the Delaware Valley.<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Local fans of Howard Jones can be thankful that the British singer holds them in high regard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Jones will play his show scheduled for September 1 at the World Caf\u00e9 Live at the Queen (500 North Market Street, Wilmington, 302- 994-1400,\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.queen.worldcafelive.com\/\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>www.queen.worldcafelive.com<\/b><\/span><\/a>) despite conditions that would have led many other acts to cancel the gig.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThis North American tour is just four dates,\u201d said Jones, during a phone interview Wednesday evening from his hotel room in Philadelphia. \u201cI just recently finished a 45-show tour this summer and went back home to England.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe were going to tour South America this September and we put these shows in the states around that. The South American tour got cancelled but we wanted to still honor these dates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe promoter of the South American tour didn\u2019t come up with the visas and the money so we had to cancel the tour. We can\u2019t just leave and head off without the necessary documents. I\u2019m still planning on doing shows there sometime because I\u2019ve never played there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cNext, we\u2019re touring Australia in from November 2 until the middle of the month. After that, we\u2019re coming back to the states and will be touring here for the rest of November and part of December.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Jones, a New Wave icon who was one of the forefathers of synth-pop, toured America last summer with three completely different shows.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The singer-guitarist-keyboardist, who was well-known to MTV viewers for his tufts of blond hair as well as his well-crafted songs, performed a special multimedia show called \u201cENGAGE\u201d in New York.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">He also played a string of dates across the country \u2014 some with his band and some as solo piano shows. Jones played two shows in the area &#8212; the Queen and the Sellersville Theater &#8212; in \u201csolo piano\u201d mode.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI\u2019ll be playing a band show on all four of these North American dates,\u201d said Jones. \u201cIt\u2019s a completely electronic band. I\u2019ve been working with Robbie for about 20 years and with Jonathan for 10-12 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI also play keyboards. I have a new rig which is based on Mainstage \u2014 the equivalent to Logic software. Rather than carting around hundreds of keyboards, I use software. I\u2019ve gone away from the hardware because it\u2019s too difficult to travel with.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Jones\u2019 performances of \u201cENGAGE\u201d last year were ambitious and highly entertaining. \u00a0Entirely fan-funded by PledgeMusic, \u201cENGAGE\u201d incorporated specially-commissioned visuals with music and an interactive live show.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cENGAGE\u201d is inspired by such diverse musical genres as electronica, contemporary classical and pop and fuses this audio m\u00e9lange with other visual and literary arts including ballet, modern dance and philosophy. The \u201cENGAGE\u201d audience is invited to participate via a specially-designed smart phone app, customized clothing and fluorescent make-up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWith \u2018ENGAGE,\u2019 I wanted to do something different instead of just making an album with a lot of songs,\u201d said Jones. \u201cI wanted to write something that would be a live event in a most exciting way. I wanted to have it dramatic with a lot of visuals, including a film of ballet, and a lot of influences \u2014 classical, pop and Steve Reich. I took a real mixture of styles I really love and mashed them together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe \u2018ENGAGE\u2019 shows were great. I did five of them around the world. It was brilliant. I would have liked to have taken it on the road more extensively but the cost of doing that was too much.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Jones had his first Top Five hit in 1983 with the song \u201cNew Song.\u201d Four more hits followed over the course of a year and his album \u201cHuman\u2019s Lib\u201d reached the top spot on the U.K. album charts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Jones\u2019 1984 \u201cLike to Get to Know You Well\u201d was \u201cdedicated to the original spirit of the Olympic Games\u201d and became a worldwide hit. It also was used in the film \u201cBetter Off Dead\u201d and the computer game\u00a0\u201cGrand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cDream into Action,\u201d which came out in 1985, quickly became a Top Ten Platinum album in the United States and was Jones\u2019 most successful album. Four major hits were on that album \u2014 \u201cThings Can Only Get Better,\u201d \u201cLife In One Day,\u201d \u201cNo One Is To Blame,\u201d and \u201cLike To Get To Know You Well.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Jones has stayed up-to-date with both music technology and musical styles, including EDM (Electronic dance music).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI\u2019ve done a new version of \u2018Everlasting Love\u201d and there is an EDM hit of \u2018Things Can Only Get Better\u2019 with (French DJ\/producer) Cedric Gervais. All the hits have been updated and we do play a lot of dubstep.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI\u2019m also working on some songs for a couple of films. One is \u2018Eddie the Eagle,\u2019 which is a real-life story of a famous British skier. It is set in the 80s so there is a lot of 80s-style music in the show \u2014 new songs in the old style. I\u2019m also writing songs for an American animated film called \u2018Animal Crackers.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIn my live shows now, I\u2019m doing one of the \u2018Eddie the Eagle\u2019 songs and two or three from \u2018ENGAGE.\u2019 It will feature a cross-section from all my albums and, of course, my hits. I try to play most of the hits. I have about 10-12 \u2018must-play\u2019 songs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Jones also looks to the past spiritually. He is a devout follower of Nichiren Buddhism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cA friend of mine who is a fashion designer got me interested in Buddhism,\u201d said Jones. \u201cI loved the way he worked with people and his positivity. So, I got him to teach me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI started straight out with Nichiren and I chant \u2018Nam Myoho Renge Kyo\u2019 (a mantra that dates back to 1253) every day &#8212; in the morning and again in the evening. Nichiren focuses on the belief in the positive power of human beings.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s3\">Video link for Howard Jones \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?feature=player_embedded&amp;v=hUFw5Qi0pjU\"><span class=\"s4\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?feature=player_embedded&amp;v=hUFw5Qi0pjU<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Jones\u2019 show at the Queen will start at 8 p.m. on September 1 with tickets are priced at $26 and $34.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Other upcoming shows at the Queen are Stephen DiJoseph on September 2, \u201cAccent Rock School Presents Teen Jam\u201d on September 3 and \u201cMike Peters Presents The Alarm Spirit of \u201886\u201d on September 7.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1608\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1608\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1608\" src=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/mac-sabbath-300x213.jpg\" alt=\"Mac Sabbath\" width=\"300\" height=\"213\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1608\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mac Sabbath<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If you like food from MacDonald\u2019s and music from Black Sabbath, then you\u2019ll probably really like Mac Sabbath.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">And, if you like music parodies and intelligently humorous lyrics that poke fun at a fast food icon, then you\u2019ll probably really like Mac Sabbath.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Actually, even if you just like well-played metal music by experienced musicians, then you\u2019ll probably really like Mac Sabbath.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Mac Sabbath, an L.A.-based band like no other, will visit the area on September 2 for a show at Underground Arts (1200 Callowhill Street, Philadelphia, <a href=\"http:\/\/undergroundarts.org\/\"><span class=\"s5\">http:\/\/undergroundarts.org<\/span><\/a>). The kings of \u201cextra cheesy\u201d metal covers, began their summer headline tour &#8212; \u201cthe \u201cClown Power Tour\u201d &#8212; a few days ago in Las Vegas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Mac Sabbath \u2014 Grimalice, bass; Ronald Osbourne, vocals; The Cat Burglar, drums \u00a0; Slayer MacCheeze, guitar \u2014 puts on a theatrical, multimedia stage show with a smoking grill, laser-eyed clowns, bouncing burgers and many more magical surprises.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Despite the obvious references to a multi-national fast food chain, the band has to be very careful not to verbally reference said food chain lest it be devoured by the a horde of \u201cMac Lawyers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Mac Sabbath is an American parody\/heavy metal ban that focuses on the music of Black Sabbath and employs lyricism and imagery based on fast food. In Mac Sabbath\u2019s hands, Black Sabbath\u2019s \u201cIron Man\u2019 becomes \u201cFrying Pan\u201d while Ozzie and the gang\u2019s \u201cParanoid\u201d becomes \u201cPair-a-Buns.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">None of the band members speak to the press but the task is ably handled by the group\u2019s manager Mike Odd, former lead singer of Rosemary\u2019s Billygoat and owner of a bizarre shop on Sunset Boulevard in L.A. called The Rosemary\u2019s Billygoat Odditorium.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI used to run Odditorium in Hollywood and I chased down weird stuff,\u201d said Odd, during a phone interview. \u201cI got an anonymous call to meet this guy at a fast food place in Chatsworth, California.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThis mess of a clown burst through the door wearing a costume of bright yellow and red, and giant shiny shoes. His costume was trailed by long, tattered, hippie fringe that was dirty from scraping the floor and his face was caked in ghostly make up. He said his name was Ronald Osborne, and he that he was familiar with my band Rosemary\u2019s Billygoat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cHe said he had a concept I might appreciate \u2014 something he described as \u2018drive-thru metal.\u2019 He invited me to come to a secret 3 a.m. meeting to watch him and a cast of characters named Slayer Mac Cheeze, Grimalice, and the Cat Burglar perform.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThey played Black Sabbath songs that had been changed to lyrics about fast food and they screamed about Monsanto and GMOs. He wanted me to manage them. He said it was a secret project and he wanted me to bring it above ground.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Odd told Ronald that he would manage his band \u2014 even if it was a disturbed clown and a band of Monsanto mutants who refuse to reveal their identities because they think they came here from a wormhole in space time direct from 1970.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe filmed one of our first public shows and then put \u2018Frying Pan\u2019 on YouTube,\u201d said Odd. \u201cIt got picked up by everybody. Even Black Sabbath pushed it. They got it. And, when they posted the video, it went out to 10 million Black Sabbath fans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThese Monsanto Mutants are tough. There are a lot of unconventional things about this project. For example, Ronald has told us that we have to go back to the 1970s when music and food was real \u2014 back to a pre-Orwellian time. He doesn\u2019t respond to any technology past the 1970s.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">On the Clown Power Tour, Mac Sabbath will be joined by equally mesmerizing one-man, painted Elvis Presley project, Clownvis Presley &#8212; an act that was originally discovered on Season 5 of \u201cAmerica\u2019s Got Talent.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Video link for Mac Sabbath &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/G9pHgJq2wko\"><span class=\"s2\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/G9pHgJq2wko<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The show at Underground Arts will start at 9 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance and $18 at the door.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1609\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1609\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1609\" src=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/horse-lords-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Horse Lords\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1609\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Horse Lords<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The band Horse Lords, which will perform on September 3 at Vox Populi (319 North 11th Street, Philadelphia, 215-238-1236, \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.museumfire.com\/events\"><span class=\"s6\">http:\/\/www.museumfire.com\/events<\/span><\/a>), has been described with such terms as \u201cdrone rock,\u201d \u201cmath rock\u201d and \u201csmarty-arty-weirdos.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">None of them are really accurate or insightful descriptions of the young band from Baltimore.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Most of today\u2019s rock music has its roots in blues, early country-and-western, R&amp;B, rockabilly and maybe 1960s British rock.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Horse Lords\u2019 music roots are in early electronic (not electronica) and avant-garde music. The band also has Krautrock (such as Neu and Can) and the experimental side of ambient (such as Brian Eno) in its DNA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cAt the very first, it was me on drums, Max Eilbacher\u00a0 on bass and electronics) and Owen Gardner on guitar,\u201d said Sam Haberman, during a phone interview Tuesday afternoon as the band drove from Atlanta, Georgia to a show in Asheville, North Carolina.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cAt our second show, Andrew Bernstein saw us play and thought that it would be good for him to join. It was a good move. Bernie\u2019s been playing sax and percussion for us ever since.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIt all started when Owen was asked to play at a festival here in Baltimore called Artscape. He agreed &#8212; and then forgot about it. A week before the festival, they reminded him he was expected to play. He came up with the name Horse Lords. He called max and said &#8212; do you want to be in my rock band. Max said &#8212; yeah\u2026.and I\u2019ve got a drummer. Now, a couple years have gone by and we have three albums and three mixtapes so far.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Horse Lords\u2019 third album is \u201cInterventions,\u201d which was released by Northern Spy Records on April 29, 2016.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">According to a Northern Spy press release, \u201cWest African rhythms collide with just intonation guitars, art-fire saxophone, minimalist grooves, and collaged zapdowns on\u00a0Interventions, the powerful third full-length from Baltimore\u2019s Horse Lords.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe band\u2019s Northern Spy debut is also the first Horse Lords album to explore the classic studio-as-weaponry strategies of yore, mapping the quartet\u2019s raw Baltimore lightning onto the experimental\u00a0musique concr\u00e8te\u00a0territory surveyed by elder heads like Faust and This Heat.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe all are pretty ecumenical in our approach to music,\u201d said Haberman. \u201cThere is a wanderlust to our musical taste. We all come from the Krautrock zone &#8212; also form the music that was made by John Cage and Karlheinz Stockhausen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe made a piece last year that was along the lines of Cage-ian chance encounter. It was a 20<\/span><span class=\"s7\"><sup>th<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> anniversary tribute to (Led Zeppelin\u2019s) \u2018Swan Song.\u2019 I reconstructed it into a demo and had a friend read the piece. We broke it down, processed it and reconstructed it according to the libretto.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cOn another piece, we did field recordings of street noise at the Baltimore protests following the death of Freddie Gray. The final result was a piece that reesembkled Steve Reich\u2019s style of cut-up.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">With musical recipes such as these, you might think that Horse Lords is primarily a studio band &#8212; but such is not the case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cLive music is our primary mode,\u201d said Haberman. \u201cThe main pieces we do are honed through live performances. Eventually, we transfer then to a record.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cOur live shows have a very open vibe. The songs are different every time we play them. We get to a point where we have a piece that congeals into a set thing and then we try to record it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Video link for Horse Lords &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/yzkhRPkPvSY\"><span class=\"s2\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/yzkhRPkPvSY<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The show at Vox Populi, which is billed as \u201cAll the Time in the World Festival,\u201d also features Spires That In the Sunset Rise, Tom Carter\/<a href=\"https:\/\/carterthornton.bandcamp.com\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Carter Thornton<\/span><\/a> and Erik Ruin\u2019s Ominous Cloud Ensemble. The show is slated to get underway at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10-15 sliding scale while $20 includes Erik Ruin art poster.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Vox Populi will also present a triple-bill featuring Ava Mendoza, Jessica Pavone and Rosie Langabeer on September 1.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1610\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1610\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1610\" src=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/coldplay-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Coldplay\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1610\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Coldplay<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Philadelphia will be the \u201cConcert Capitol of America\u201d on Labor Day Weekend &#8212; just as it has been for the last few years. When the summer-ending holiday weekend arrives each year, Philly hosts the Budweiser Made in America Festival.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Budweiser Made in America Festival is an annual music staged in Philly (and formerly was simultaneously held in Los Angeles. This year, the Philly-only show will be held on September 3 and 4.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The festive holiday music event, which is held on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, is sponsored by Anheuser\u2013Busch and produced by Live Nation. The festival has a reputation for presenting music from a variety of genres including rock, EDM (electronic dance music), hip hop, R&amp;B, and indie rock.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1611\" style=\"width: 224px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1611\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1611\" src=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/rihanna-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"Rihanna\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1611\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rihanna<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Created and curated by rapper\/rock music mogul Jay Z, Made in America features multiple stages of top-flight live music along with a wide array of food and beverage vendors. Every year, Jay Z carefully selects a lineup of featuring both emerging and establishes acts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The festival will be headlined by Rihanna on Saturday and Coldplay.
