On September 16, the veteran singer-songwriter will return for a show at the Sellersville Theater (24 West Temple Avenue, Sellersville, 215-257-5808,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.st94.com\/\"><span class=\"s2\">www.st94.com<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI\u2019ve been making plans to go back to England, Scandinavia and Holland,\u201d said Forbert, during a phone interview last week from his home at the Jersey Shore. \u201cAnd, I want to finish the book I\u2019ve been trying to write for the last two years.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Forbert also has been active with his soon-to-be-released album \u201cFlying at Night.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI\u2019m also doing a U.K.-only promotion tour for my new album in November,\u201d said Forbert. \u201cI wrote and recorded it with Anthony Crawford. \u00a0It\u2019s a good feeling album and I\u2019ll have some on sale in Sellersville.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It\u2019s pretty safe to say that singer-songwriter Steve Forbert is never going to oversaturate the market with his recorded output.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Forbert released his last album \u2018Compromised\u201d on November 6, 2015, via Rock Ridge Music &#8212; 34 years after he released his debut album \u201cAlive On Arrival.\u201d In the three decades-plus, he has only released 14 studio albums.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Recorded in Woodstock and Cape Cod and produced by Forbert along with John Simon, \u201cCompromised\u201d features a healthy dose of the singer-songwriter\u2019s aggressive, roots-rock music.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cCompromised\u201d collaborators include bassist Joey Spampinato (NRBQ), drummer Lou Cataldo (The Freeze), pianist\/trumpeter Kami Lyle, and keyboardist Robbie Kondor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWith \u2018Over with You,\u2019 the songs had been building up for three years,\u201d said Forbert. \u201cBen Harper had rented a studio and had time left that he wasn\u2019t able to use. So, he offered to let me use that time. I was ready. I had to be ready.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Forbert headed off alone to Carriage House studio in Los Angeles\u2019 Silver Lake neighborhood to work with Grammy Award-winning producer Chris Goldsmith.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0\u201cI was working with musicians I had never worked with before,\u201d said Forbert. \u201cI wanted to do something different so I trusted the producer. We were in the studio three days and did all the songs. I flew in on Sunday, checked out the studio Monday, recorded Tuesday through Thursday and was back home in Nashville Friday. It was my first time to do a record like that. I think the immediacy helped.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe new album was the opposite of the last. I contacted John Simon first and we set up some sessions. We did some recording with John in Woodstock and then he went to Florida. So, I went to Cape Cod and did some more recording with John Evans producing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI worked a lot on the album from October to January. We had to go to Cape Cod right after that huge snowstorm in Boston. We did a few bonus tracks \u2014 Americana versions of some of the things on the album.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Forbert has a very solid fan base and that\u2019s fine with him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWhat I do is more about songs,\u201d said Forbert. \u201cI just do what I\u2019ve always done. Lyrics \u2014 and topics \u2014 move with me through life. I don\u2019t pay attention to fads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI\u2019m not a jam band or an act that plays for big crowds. It\u2019s folk-rock and mostly acoustic. I rarely go out with a band. In Sellersville, I\u2019ll have Mark Stuart with me on lead guitar &#8212; but it\u2019s still like a solo show. A solo show is more intimate &#8212; and, it can be spontaneous.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWhen I play solo, I can play songs from my whole catalogue.\u00a0 I just can\u2019t play the same show over and over again. I do have songs that I know people want to hear me play such as \u2018Going to Laurel\u2019 and \u2018Romeo\u2019s Tune\u2019 so I don\u2019t want to exclude them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s3\">Video link for Steve Forbert \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?feature=player_detailpage&amp;v=eu_oTh04u3c\"><span class=\"s4\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?feature=player_detailpage&amp;v=eu_oTh04u3c<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Forbert\u2019s show at Sellersville, which has Joe Crookston as the opening act, will get underway at 8 p.m. Tickets are $29.50 and $45.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1750\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1750\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1750\" src=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/book-of-love-215x300.jpg\" alt=\"Book of Love\" width=\"215\" height=\"300\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1750\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Book of Love<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Book of Love formed in Philadelphia in the mid-1980\u2019s and immediately won over fans with its electronic\/synth-pop music and its ability to come out with well-crafted dance hits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The group racked up a string of hits over the next 10 years &#8212; and then disbanded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Now, Book of Love is back.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Book of Love will be performing September 17 at World\u00a0Caf\u00e9 Live (3025 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, 215-222-1400, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldcafelive.com\/\"><span class=\"s2\">www.worldcafelive.com<\/span><\/a>) as part of its 30th Anniversary Reunion Tour. This year also marks the three-decade anniversary of\u00a0the band\u2019s eponymous debut album.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cMMXVI \u2013 Book of Love \u2013 The 30th Anniversary Collection,\u201d\u00a0which was released in July on Sire\/Rhino Records, features re-mastered versions of the band\u2019s greatest hits and never-before released demos. This digital collection will also feature two new songs \u2013 \u201cAll Girl Band\u201d and \u201cSomething Good\u201d \u2013 which are the band\u2019s first new recordings in over 15 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">One of the premiere new wave electronic groups, Book of Love emerged out of the New York City scene in the mid-1980\u2019s and was signed by the legendary Seymour Stein to Sire Records.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">But, before New York, there was Philly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">On April 1, 1986, four Philadelphia College of Art students-turned- musicians &#8212; Ted Ottaviano, Susan Ottaviano, Jade Lee and Lauren Roselli &#8212; released the band\u2019s debut album.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Between 1986 and 1993, the band released four albums and had a steady string of influential club hits, including the classics \u201cBoy,\u201d \u201cI Touch Roses,\u201d, \u201c\u201cPretty Boys &amp; Pretty Girls\/Tubular Bells,\u201d and You Make Me Feel So Good.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cPretty Boys &amp; Pretty Girls\/Tubular Bells\u201d even crossed over from the dance charts to the Billboard Hot 100. Book of Love\u2019s music was featured in the classic movies \u201cPlanes, Trains and Automobiles,\u201d \u201cSilence of the Lambs,\u201d and \u201cAmerican Psycho.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Book of Love now is out on a cross-country album support tour that brings the band back to the town where it all began.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe\u2019re back &#8212; at least for this 30<\/span><span class=\"s5\"><sup>th<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> anniversary project,\u201d said Susan Ottaviano, during a phone interviews last week from her home in New York City. \u201cThey\u2019re booking us through February. We\u2019re pretty much going everywhere &#8212; especially to places we haven\u2019t been in 20 years.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Even though they were no longer performing as an active band, the four old friends were constantly sought for live shows.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe kept getting offers for shows,\u201d said Ottaviano. \u201cWe had a few mini-reunions. Jade joins us when she can but, at this point in her life, she doesn\u2019t want to tour. When we did a reunion show in New York, she came and played.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Over the years, New York-based Ted and Susan Ottaviano (not related) continued in music. Roselli, who lives in Pennsylvania, pursued an acting career and appeared in films such as \u201cPhiladelphia,\u201d\u00a0 \u201cManchurian Candidate,\u201d and \u201cBeloved.\u201d Lee. Who also lives in New York, is a graphic designer and artist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe were doing a show in L.A. that caught the interest of people from Sire\/Rhino,\u201d said Ottaviano. \u201cThat led to the anniversary album which then led to this tour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIt really is celebrating our 30<\/span><span class=\"s5\"><sup>th<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> anniversary and our whole collection of songs. We re-mastered the album &#8212; which is wonderful because it really sounds great and compares well to music that is being made today. We also added a few demos and one re-mix.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cAnd, we put in two new songs that were written within the last year &#8212; \u2018All Girl Band\u2019 and \u2018Something Good.\u2019 We recorded those two songs at Ted\u2019s studio in Brooklyn. What we really tried to do was make music that we liked.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Video link for Book of Love &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/0vcjJKNq9EM\"><span class=\"s2\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/0vcjJKNq9EM<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1751\" src=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/rock-allegiance-194x300.jpg\" alt=\"rock-allegiance\" width=\"194\" height=\"300\" \/>The show at the World Caf\u00e9 Live will start at 8 p.m. Tickets are $30 reserved and $20 SRO.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">With the Monster Energy Rock Allegiance festival coming to Chester on Saturday and Sunday, the Philadelphia area will be Mecca for fans of metal music this weekend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The onslaught of heavy music will actually get underway on September 16 when Cobalt and Mantar share the bill at Kung Fu Necktie (1248 North Front Street, Philadelphia, 215-291-4919, <a href=\"http:\/\/kungfunecktie.com\/\"><span class=\"s2\">kungfunecktie.com<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Mantar makes some of the heaviest music around &#8212; with just two musicians. The band from northern Germany includes just drummer\/vocalist Erinc and guitarist\/vocalist Hanno.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1752\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1752\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1752\" src=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/mantar-300x182.jpg\" alt=\"Mantar\" width=\"300\" height=\"182\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1752\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mantar<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe arrived in the states two-and-a-half weeks ago,\u201d said Hanno, as the duo was travelling on its way to a show in Pittsburgh. \u201cWe\u2019re pretty much co-headlining with Cobalt. Since they are more well-known in the states, they go on last. But, at a lot of the shows, people have come up to us and said they were mainly there to see Mantar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe toured the states two times before &#8212; March 2015 and May 2105. The first tour was a good way to learn about America. We played Philly on the second tour. That show was also at Kung Fu Necktie.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Mantar started in Bremen, relocated to Hamburg and then returned to Bremen recently.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe\u2019ve known each other for 19 years,\u201d said Hanno. \u201cWe\u2019re both from Bremen and we got to be friends in the music scene there in the early 90\u2019s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cBut, we just started playing music together a few years ago. I was looking for something new. I asked him if he was available &#8212; and he was.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Mantar, which released its sophomore album \u201cOde to the Flame\u201d on April 15 on Nuclear Blast Records, has a sound that \u00a0is powerful, heavy and somewhat of a hybrid.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI\u2019m a little more on the metal side and he\u2019s a little more on the rock side,\u201d said Hanno. \u201cEven though I like extreme metal, I also like having songs. I don\u2019t want to have all the songs sound alike. There should be something special in every song.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI had a very strong vision of what I wanted to do with Mantar. We were able to pull off songs very quickly with a two-piece setup. I had considered adding bass player but didn\u2019t find one. The band started as a solo project by Matt Bigland and has had many different incarnations. Current members are drummer Mike Sheils, bassist Jim Cratchley and lead singer\/guitarist Bigland.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThis line-up has been together for while,\u201d said Bigland, during a phone interview Wednesday afternoon as the band travelled from a tour date in New York to a gig in Tennessee. \u201cIt\u2019s been three years since Jim joined. Me and Mike were playing together a couple years before that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cFrom the start, Dinosaur Pile-Up was always a solo project. I used different musician friends all along and it was a revolving door. The band evolved in front of people\u2019s eyes. \u201cWhen I got this line-up, it was the first time that it really felt like a band. There was a band form before but it was never \u2018solid as a rock.\u2019 This band is solid.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Dinosaur Pile-Up\u2019s third studio album \u201cEleven Eleven\u201d was released via SO Recordings on August 26, 2016.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201c\u2019Eleven Eleven\u2019 is our first album as a band,\u201d said Bigland. \u201cWe toured a lot before we recorded it. Jim had joined right after the second album (2013\u2019s \u2018Nature Nurture\u2019) and we toured solidly for one-and-a-half years &#8212; including the United States three times and Japan two times. The ideas for \u2018Eleven Eleven\u2019 came from when we were on the road.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It took the album quite some time to see the light of day in America.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe recorded it in January 2015,\u201d said Bigland. \u201cIt came out in the U.K. last October. We found the right home for it in the U.K. and Japan but not in the U.S. or Europe. After we released the album in the U.K., we got introduced to an American management team though a friend. We didn\u2019t want to release the album in the states without the right people. So, we signed a global management deal with them. Now, our record company is SO Records.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Most of \u201cEleven Eleven\u201d recorded at one of the most legendary and iconic recording studios in the world &#8212; Rockfield Studios in Wales.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe were aware of the studio\u2019s history,\u201d said Bigland. \u201cA lot of really great bands recorded there &#8211;including Queen. We were working with Tom Dalgetti as our producer. We booked three weeks and recorded 15-16songs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI never think you can plan what the vibe of an album will be. You just have to go do it. Me, Mike and Jim wanted a heavy record. Tom wanted a heavy record. The Orlando-based quartet \u2014 Matt Heafy (vocals, guitar), Corey Beaulieu (guitar, vocals), Paul Wandtke (drums), Paolo Gregoletto (bass, vocals) \u2014 continues to tour in support its most recent album \u201cSilence in the Snow.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe\u2019re rehearsing this week,\u201d said Gregoletto, during a phone interview last week from his home in Orlando, Florida. \u201cWe start a month-long tour next week in Columbus, Ohio. Why do we need to rehearse when we\u2019ve been playing the new album for over a year? You\u2019ve got to practice. It\u2019s the key. It\u2019s like sports. It\u2019s not all games.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe time in-between tours is the time we spend writing ideas. Right now, it\u2019s just informal writing. We probably won\u2019t go into the studio until later next year because we have a European tour in February and March. And, it depends on which producer we want to work with and the studio we want to use.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The band has been touring in support of its \u201cSilence in the Snow\u201d album, which was released last fall on Roadrunner Records.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0\u201cWe finished the album in May and it came out in October,\u201d said Beaulieu. \u201cWe recorded it here in Orlando. Our producer Elvis Bassett owns a studio that is 10 minutes from where we live. This was the first time we worked with him. Each time, we use a producer who fits what we want to do on that album.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In a marked change of style, Trivium abandoned screaming vocals and used only clean vocals on \u201cSilence in the Snow.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWhen we were making the album, we were focused on vocals and hooks,\u201d said Beaulieu. \u201cAnd, we were focused on stepping up the vocal production. The songs we were writing \u2014 singing is what was needed. There was no need for screaming.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Gregoletto said, \u201cAll things are the way they\u2019re meant to be. Matt had to stop screaming. He had to rebuild from the ground up and he has done it well. We\u2019re a band that embraces the melody. I don\u2019t think we\u2019ll ever go back to predominantly screaming.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe\u2019ve always had clean vocals in addition to screaming. On our second album \u2018Ascendency,\u2019 the choruses were clean. Matt\u2019s clean vocals gave us an identity from the beginning. Even our third album \u2018The Crusade\u2019 had a lot of clean singing. Still, if a song needs screaming, we can go there and use it wisely.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Beaulieu said, \u201cWe\u2019ve always had the melodic side to our sound. With the new songs, there is a lot of focus on other guitar stuff. I don\u2019t have to sing as much.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Trivium released its first album \u201cEmber to Inferno\u201d in 2003 and last year\u2019s \u201cSilence in the Snow\u201d was their seventh album release.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIn the studio, we\u2019re still perfectionists,\u201d said Beaulieu. \u201cWe rehearse a lot. We always want everything to sound as good as it can. We want everything to be perfect.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWhen we get in the studio, we get done what we set out to do. The performance side is pretty quick. When it comes to mixing and mastering, we know what kind of sonics we\u2019re looking for. They filled out the line-up with bassist Brian Carpenter and lewad vocalist Ray \u201cRafer John\u201d Cerbone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe band started by chance,\u201d said Cerbone, during a phone interview Monday as he drove to the band\u2019s recording studio in Florida.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cTony and Shannon were practicing Godsmack stuff one day. During a break, Tony started playing some blues. Shannon was surprised that Tommy was playing the blues. They realized they both lived the blues and decided to do this project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI had met Shannon through a mutual friend at a biker bar in Florida,\u201d said Cerbone. \u201cI ride a Harley and Shannon rides a Harley. So, we hit it off. It was more of a biker mutual friendship. I didn\u2019t look at Shannon as a rock star. When he came to my house one time, he saw my guitar and asked me to do a song.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">That singing of a song led to something more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cA little while later, he and Tony wrote a blues song,\u201d said Cerbone. \u201cShannon called me and said he needed someone to sing it. I went to the studio. He put the thing on for me and said &#8212; sing for me. He told me to belt it out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWhen I got done, he and Tony were applauding. They were impressed. That was about three years ago. From there, Shannon called Brian Carpenter in to be our bass player. We all contribute to the sound.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cShannon writes on his own, I write on my own and some songs are mutual efforts. When we get a song down and have a good bass line, we go ahead and record it &#8211;and it\u2019s there. Then, the changes are made from the base recording.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe made the CD at the Vibe Studio in Fort Myers, Florida. We had 17 songs and picked the best 12 to be on the record. We knocked it out pretty quickly. These guys are high-end professional musicians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cNow, we already have a second CD\u2019s worth of songs written. We could actually go into the studio now and make our second album. The intense quintet&#8211; vocalist Mark Osegueda, lead guitarist Rob Cavestany, guitarist Ted Aguilar, drummer Will Carroll, and bassist Damien Sisson &#8212; is touring in support of its newest album \u201cThe Evil Divide,\u201d which was released earlier this year on Nuclear Blast Records.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Cavestany is the lone original member from a band that was formed in 1982. Death Angel released its debut album \u201cThe Ultra-Violence\u201d in 1987. Surprisingly, \u201cThe Evil Divide\u201d is just the band\u2019s eighth studio album.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">There is a reason for the group\u2019s limited output of full-lengths. After a road accident that critically injured the band\u2019s drummer Andy Galeon and a series of other setbacks, Death Angel threw in the towel in that year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Fortunately, Galeon survived and returned to playing music. Death Angel also returned to playing music &#8212; but not until after a decade-plus hiatus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Death Angel officially reunited in August 2001 for \u201cThrash of the Titans,\u201d a cancer benefit show for Testament frontman Chuck Billy. Original Death Angel guitarist Gus Pepa could not participate in the reunion so the band brought in longtime friend Ted Aguilar to play rhythm guitar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cChuck Billy talked to Rob (Cavestany) and Rob put the band back together for \u2018Thrash of the Titans,\u2019 said Aguilar, during a phone interview Tuesday evening from a tour stop in Montreal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThey called me in to play guitar. We rehearsed a couple days for the show. From what the guys were talking about then, Death Angel was pretty well done and everybody was going their separate ways.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThen, we played the show and the crowd reaction was great. And, the vibe on the stage was great. So, we did a few more shows around the Bay Area and it has kept going from there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cFor me, learning to play all the band\u2019s songs was a little bit of a challenge. The songs are tricky. Death Angel had a unique sound. But, I played in local Bay Area bands when I was younger and we covered Death Angel songs from the late 80\u2019s and early 90\u2019s. We just jammed them out for fun.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Death Angel arose from the grave and has been making impressively heavy music ever since. The band has released five post-reunion albums &#8212; \u201cThe Art of Dying\u201d (2004), \u201cKilling Season\u201d (2008), \u201cRelentless Retribution\u201d (2010), \u201cThe Dream Calls for Blood\u201d (2013) and \u201cThe Evil Divide\u201d (2016).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0\u201cThe Evil Divide\u201d was recorded at AudioHammer Studios in Sanford, Florida with producer Jason Suecof (Trivium, Deicide), who previously worked on 2010\u2019s \u201cRelentless Retribution\u201d and 2013\u2019s \u201cThe Dream Calls For Blood.\u201d Mastering duties were handled by Ted Jensen at Sterling Sound in New York City.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThat\u2019s the third album we\u2019ve done with them,\u201d said Aguilar. \u201cThree\u2019s a charm and we loved the first two. We love working with Jason. It felt like we were going to a friend\u2019s home whenever we went to the studio. We rented a house near the studio. We would eat, spend 12 hours in the studio, eat again, sleep and then start the same sequence over again.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The album is loaded with all the characteristics the band\u2019s music is known for &#8212; buzzsaw speed riffs, double bass mayhem, and scorching vocals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWhen it comes to songwriting, it comes naturally after the riff,\u201d said Aguilar. \u201cAlso, we get inspiration from the road. We just put it all together &#8212; and we make it heavier. We always try to push the envelope when we\u2019re writing.
