One of the shows slated for October 6 showcases a band which has carved a niche all its own.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Alestorm, which will perform at The Voltage Lounge (421 North Seventh Street, Philadelphia, 215- 964-9602, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.voltagelounge.com\/\"><span class=\"s2\">www.Voltagelounge.com<\/span><\/a>), is a pirate-themed metal band from Scotland &#8212; self-identified as \u201cBacon-powered pirate core.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The band \u2013 Christopher Bowes \u2013 Vocals; M\u00e1t\u00e9 Bodor \u2013 Guitar; Gareth Murdock \u2013 Bass; Elliot Vernon \u2013 Keyboards; Peter Alcorn \u2013 Drums &#8212; formed under the name Battleheart in 2004. After releasing two demos, the band was signed by Napalm Records in 2007 and changed its name to Alestorm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Alestorm, which released its latest album \u201cSunset on the Golden Age\u201d in 2014 on Napalm, got its start in Perth, Scotland.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe escaped from Perth,\u201d said Bowes, during a phone interview Tuesday from a tour stop in Baltimore.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIt\u2019s a cold-hearted place \u2013 just dreadful. Now, we all live in crazy places \u2013 England, Scotland, Hungary. I live in Johnson City, Tennessee.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cOur producer is based in northern Germany so we usually have gone there to record our albums. For our next record, we\u2019re thinking about recording in Florida \u2013 where it\u2019s warm and we can go the beach.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A perfect place and time for Alestorm to record in Florida would be in Tampa in late January when the city hosts its annual Gasparilla Pirate Festival.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Alestorm posted the following on its Facebook site \u2013 \u201cAvast, ye landlubbers! From the deepest darkest depths of the Caribbean comes ALESTORM, a drunken band of pirates on an epic quest to drink your beer, steal your beer and be the greatest damn band to ever sail the seven seas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cFrom humble beginnings playing shows to farm animals in a field somewhere in Eastern Scotland, Alestorm have evolved into an international party machine hellbent on conquering album charts and festival stages throughout the world, with their infectious brand of &#8216;Pirate Metal&#8217; and their dashing good looks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cSomehow they&#8217;ve managed to convince hundreds of thousands of people from New Zealand to Argentina to Lithuania and everywhere inbetween (except Paraguay), that it&#8217;s cool to wear a pirate hat and sing stupid songs about getting drunk and stealing ships. So prepare your spleens, because Alestorm are coming to kick ass and chew gum.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Bowes said, \u201cThe whole pirate thing started as a gimmick. None of us really like pirates. I refuse to think that anyone really likes pirates \u2013 do they?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cBut, with us, it\u2019s still definitely pirates at the end of the day. We thought that after two albums, we\u2019d run out of pirate-inspired things. But, there is a treasure chest of material.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cOur music is varied. We have the folk melodies. We have pop songs. We play extreme metal. Most people think of us as a metal band but we\u2019re a pop band. Tickets are $25.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/goldroom.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1977\" src=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/goldroom-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"goldroom\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>On October 6, Theatre of the Living Arts (334 South Street, Philadelphia, 215-222-1011, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lnphilly.com\/\"><span class=\"s2\">http:\/\/www.lnphilly.com<\/span><\/a>) will present a twin bill featuring Goldroom and Autograf.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Goldroom is a project by singer, songwriter, producer, and electro- pop artist Josh Legg. Goldroom released his debut album \u201cWest of the West\u201d on September 23 via Downtown \/ Interscope Records.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI usually perform solo as Goldroom,\u201d said Legg, during a phone interview Tuesday from a tour stop in Warwick, Rhode Island.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cOn this tour, we\u2019re a four-piece when we perform. There\u2019s drums, bass, keyboards and I play guitar and keyboards. And, we\u2019re touring with another band. It\u2019s my first experience on a charter tour bus with 10 other guys.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Legg was in the band Nightwaves for a while a few years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIt\u2019s not a big change for me to go from DJ to a band,\u201d said Legg, how grew up in Wellesley, Massachusetts and now lives in L.A.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI\u2019ve always been in bands \u2013 mostly guitar and lead vocal. I\u2019ve been a singer-songwriter with acoustic guitar my whole life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Legg began producing music under the name Goldroom in 2011, with remixes of tracks including Niki and the Dove&#8217;s \u201cMother Protect.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">He took his stage name from the name of a bar in Los Angeles&#8217; Echo Park area. Goldroom released his debut EP \u201cAngeles\u201d the same year, followed by the EP \u201cEmbrace\u201d in 2013.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI like DJ and dance music,\u201d said Legg. \u201cThat has its place but this music is for a band. The production sounds electronic but it\u2019s always had live instruments.in with a band format.<br \/>\n&#8220;Playing live is so much more fulfilling \u2013 to be able to have a one-on-one connection with an audience member. Billed as an \u201canthemic indie rock band,\u201d The Rocketboys\u00a0have steadily built a loyal following with the release of two albums, four Eps and two live recordings \u2013 and by performing hundreds of live shows.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Rocketboys\u2019 music has been featured in a large number of films, commercials, and TV shows \u2013 including \u201cGlee,\u201d \u201cPrivate Practice\u201d and \u201cOne Tree Hill.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In the last 12 months, The Rocketboys have had several career-defining moments including working with Grammy-winning producer Joe Chiccarelli, cracking the worldwide iTunes charts with single \u201cViva Voce\u201d and touring with and backing Dustin Kensrue, the lead singer of Thrice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe started playing music together back in 2005 when we were students at Abilene Christian University,\u201d said Wiseman, during a phone interview Monday morning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWhen we finished school, we made the call to make music our career. We moved to Austin in 2009 and we\u2019ve been there ever since.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cOur first full-length was \u201820,000 Ghosts\u2019 in 2009 and we still play songs from it. Our second album \u2018Build Anyway\u2019 in 2012 was about reconciling a situation when three original members of the band left at the same time. Brandon, Josh and I wanted to keep doing what we had set out to do. We\u2019ve taken a long time between album because we had to re-invent our songwriting. It was a struggle period sand it took us a while to pull out of it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Last year, the band released an EP titled \u201cLeft\/Right.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThat EP came out on Black Magnetic Records,\u201d said Wiseman. \u201cIt was the most well-received record we\u2019ve done but it was crazy. Financially, we had to make it on our own. Then, we parted ways with the label.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe\u2019re working on a new album now. We put out one song form it last month \u2013 \u2018You and Everyone Else.\u2019 We wanted to put it out first as a thank you to our fans who have been with us on this journey.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe new album is a 10-song album. It\u2019s finished but we have only released that one song. We\u2019ll put another song out next month. We\u2019re playing a good chunk of the new songs on our live show right now.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe\u2019re planning on releasing the album on January 20. We\u2019re going to brave the weather and put out the album in the middle of the winter. They were written when we were on tour at the end of last year \u2013 except for one which was a rewrite of a song that was left off our last album.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Trews are a Canadian hard rock band from Antigonish, Nova Scotia. The band is currently based in Ontario.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cSome of us are living now in Toronto and others are in Hamilton, Ontario,\u201d said MacDonald. \u201cWe got our started in Antigonish, where we grew up. We moved to Toronto, started writing our own songs and got our first record contract in 2003.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Trews released their debut album \u201cHouse of Ill Fame\u201d in 2003 followed by \u201cDen of Thieves\u201d (2005), \u201cNo Time for Later\u201d (2008), \u201cThe Trews Acoustic\u201d (2009), \u201cHope &amp; Ruin\u201d (2011), \u201cThank You and I\u2019m Sorry\u201d (2012) and \u201cThe Trews\u201d (2014).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">For more than a decade, the Trews have been moderately popular in America and very popular north of the border.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">They have had a lot of success in their native Canada with 16 Top 10 singles. \u201cNot Ready to Go,\u201d \u201cYearning\u201d and \u201cHold Me in Your Arms\u201d were all chart-toppers with \u201cYearning\u201d and \u201cHold Me in Your Arms\u201d both reaching gold record status.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIt\u2019s hard for Canadian bands to make it in the United States,\u201d said MacDonald. \u201cWe\u2019re grateful for our success in our homeland. But, we\u2019re not content to rest on our laurels and stay home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cOver the years, our songwriting has become more collaborative. Colin carried the burden in the early years. Then, everyone started bringing their own things in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cAll along, our songs have been acoustic-based. Right now, we have a lot of songs in various stages of completion. At some point, we\u2019ll have to bring them in the studio \u2013 hopefully early next year.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s3\">Video link for The Trews &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/jaQ7jGIxNNM?t=1\"><span class=\"s4\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/jaQ7jGIxNNM?t=1<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1980\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/7Horse.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1980\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1980\" src=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/7Horse-300x111.jpg\" alt=\"7horse\" width=\"300\" height=\"111\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1980\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">7horse<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Back in April, the band 7Horse released a new album \u201cLivin\u2019 in a Bitch of a World\u201d\u00a0and followed a national tour in support of the new disc \u2013 a tour that played a Philly club date at Fire.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">7Horse is an American rock and blues duo formed in 2011 that is most known for its song \u201cMeth Lab Zoso Sticker.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The song was featured in Martin Scorsese\u2019s film \u201cThe Wolf of Wall Street\u201d &#8212; in the second trailer and on the soundtrack.\u00a0 It was also used by FoxSports on the pre-game show for the NFL playoff season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The group consists of Phil Leavitt (songwriter, drummer, and lead vocals) and Joie Calio (songwriter, guitars, bass, and vocals) &#8212; musicians who also make up two-thirds of the band dada.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">7Horse began as a hypothetical &#8212; What if, longtime band mates Joie Calio and Phil Leavitt thought, we bury our musical\u00a0past and see if we can discover rock \u2019n\u2019 roll\u2019s Ground Zero? That question was explored in bold fashion on the duo\u2019s\u00a02011 debut \u201cLet the 7Horse Run\u201d and continued on its sophomore album \u201cSongs for a Voodoo Wedding.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It was during the time between the first two albums that 7Horse received a phone call from a representative of director Martin Scorsese, saying that the\u00a0single \u201cMeth Lab Zoso Sticker\u201d was being considered for use in the film \u201cThe Wolf of Wall Street.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201c\u2018Meth Lab Zoso Sticker\u2019 still draws people,\u201d said Leavitt, during a phone interview last week from a tour stop in New Orleans. \u201cWe were at a festival the other day. We were on at 5 p.m.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe got to \u2018Meth Lab Zoso Sticker\u2019 and 3,000 people in front of us all knew it. They might not know who we are but they hear that song and a bell goes off.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">There is a lot more to 7Horse than just that song but there is no denying its importance to the California-based duo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cHaving Scorsese use our song \u2018Meth Lab Zoso Sticker\u2019 really helped us,\u201d said Leavitt. \u201cIt was great exposure &#8212; and they paid us well. We put every dollar back into the band.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe\u2019ve played together for a long time in dada. The music dada made was all above the neck. The music we\u2019re making now is for the body. It\u2019s rock. It\u2019s blues. It\u2019s music you can feel. We make a pretty big sound for two guys. We\u2019ve got this rhythmic lock that is the centerpiece for everything we do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">That groove figures prominently on \u201cLivin\u2019 in a Bitch of a World.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe started making last year,\u201d said Leavitt. \u201cWe went to the desert &#8212; to a studio in Landers, California &#8212; and holed up for a few days. We also used my studio in Forestville, California. We spent a week in Seattle doing some tracks at London Bridge Studio and cut a couple things at Echo Park in L.A.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe\u2019re always writing &#8212; even when we\u2019re on the road. This is a real important album for us. So, we started from scratch. When we were in the studio in Forestville, we stayed in the studio and slept on the floor. We\u2019d start at noon and work until midnight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThere are only two of us playing so we always cut the tracks together.
