{"id":22053,"date":"2016-11-11T08:31:16","date_gmt":"2016-11-11T13:31:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?p=22053"},"modified":"2016-11-11T08:31:20","modified_gmt":"2016-11-11T13:31:20","slug":"what-to-do-saluting-our-veterans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?p=22053","title":{"rendered":"What To Do: Saluting our veterans"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"p1\"><em>Valley Forge, area, celebrate legacy of U.S. Service Members<\/em><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>By Denny Dyroff<\/strong>,\u00a0<\/span><em><span class=\"s1\">Staff Writer, The Times<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/VeteransDay.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2434\" src=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/VeteransDay-347x300.jpg\" alt=\"veteransday\" width=\"347\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>Today is the day that America celebrates Veterans Day \u2013 a special holiday created to honor those who have served the nation as part of United States Armed Forces.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Valley Forge National Park (1400 North Outer Line Drive, Valley Forge, 610- 783-1000, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/vafo\"><span class=\"s2\">www.nps.gov\/vafo<\/span><\/a>) is hosting a special \u201cVeterans Day Commemoration\u201d on November 11 beginning at 11 a.m. The scenic National Historical Park will commemorate the Continental Army&#8217;s legacy, and honor all of America&#8217;s military, past and present, with special events throughout the day.\u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Activities will start with the \u201cCommemoration Ceremony at the National Memorial Arch<b>.\u201d <\/b>The National Park Service will be joined by local and national military organizations to honor our nation\u2019s heroes through traditional ceremonial services.\u00a0In the closing event, an Oath of Enlistment Ceremony will induct several new recruits into the United States Military.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">From noon-3 p.m., visitors can check out \u201cAmerican Military Through the Ages\u201d at the Muhlenberg Brigade Huts. Following the morning\u2019s ceremony, park staff and volunteers \u2013 along with veterans &#8212; will present Americas military history from the perspectives of a variety of conflicts including the Revolutionary, Civil, and Vietnam Wars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Other activities will be \u201cValley Forge Trolley Tours\u201d (90-minute<b> g<\/b>uided tours depart from the Visitor Center at noon and 2 p.m.) and 40-minute, quarter-mile<b> <\/b>\u201cWalking Tours\u201d at 12:20 and 2:20 p.m. led by Rangers to Muhlenberg Brigade Huts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">All events are free and open to the public.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Military history will also be celebrated at another area site this weekend.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2435\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Siege-fort-mifflin.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2435\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2435\" src=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Siege-fort-mifflin-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Fort Miflin\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2435\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fort Miflin<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">On November 12 and 13, the Olde Fort Mifflin Historical Society will celebrate the 239th Anniversary of the \u201cSiege &amp; Bombardment of Fort Mifflin.\u201d \u00a0There will be two days of activities commemorating the historic siege and bombardment of Fort Mifflin (Fort Mifflin and Hog Island roads, Philadelphia, 215-685-4167, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fortmifflin.us\/\"><span class=\"s2\">www.fortmifflin.us<\/span><\/a>) that took place in 1777. The event gets underway each day at 10 a.m. and continues until 4 p.m.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Four full scripted battles will tell the story of the greatest bombardment of the Revolutionary War.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Fort Mifflin, which was originally called Fort Island Battery, was commissioned in 1771. It was also known as Mud Island Fort because it sits on Mud Island (also known as Deep Water Island) on the Delaware River near the Philadelphia International Airport. During the American Revolutionary War, the British Army bombarded and captured the fort as part of their conquest of Philadelphia in autumn 1777.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">During the siege, 400 American soldiers held off more than 2,000 British troops and over 250\u00a0ships that had been responsible for launching an endless barrage of cannonballs into the fort. After five days of holding off the British, the American troops evacuated the fort after having successfully denied the British Navy free use of the Delaware River.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Activities at this weekend\u2019s commemoration will depict life in the 18th century and feature weapons demonstrations, tactical demonstrations, musket drills for youngsters and a scavenger hunt. There will be military re-enactors portraying both American and British forces as they commemorate the largest bombardment that took place in the entire American Revolution. And, Benjamin Franklin will be a special guest both days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Tickets are $8 for adults, $6 for seniors and $4 for children (ages 6-12).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/2ndsat-media.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2436\" src=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/2ndsat-media.png\" alt=\"2ndsat-media\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a>On November 12, Media will host its Second Saturday Art Stroll (State Street, Media, <a href=\"http:\/\/mediaartscouncil.org\/\"><span class=\"s3\">mediaartscouncil.org<\/span><\/a>). The event, which is sponsored by the Media Arts Council, is free and open to the public.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">On the second Saturday of every month, more than 40 businesses on State Street and downtown side streets in Media stay open late as part of a free arts event. From 6-9 p.m., shops, galleries and cafes host local musicians and\/or display the work of local artists. This weekend, you can find a lot of examples of this art style at the Americana Indian Art &amp; Jewelry Show on Oaks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The show provides an excellent opportunity to look at artifacts and other items related to the history of Native Americans. The show is presented by the Americana Indian and Western Gallery and admission is free.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Americana Indian and Western Gallery had its beginning in 1947 when its founder Lee Anderson attended school on a Navajo reservation and worked after school for his uncle in the trading post. The family collected American Indian art such as Navajo rugs, pottery, baskets, and other Indian and western items.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Anderson\u2019s sells Navajo, Hopi, Zuni, and Santo Domingo jewelry, as well as Navajo rugs, Hopi and Zuni kachinas, baskets, pottery, art and collectibles. One of the most respected Native American art dealers in the United States, Americana Indian Shows brings thousands of items direct from the Southwest to the show attendees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Show hours are 11 a.m.-8 p.m. on November 11 and 10 a.m.-7 p.m. on November 12 and 13.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If you suffer from herpetophobia or ophidiophobia, then you better avoid a certain part of the exposition hall in Oaks this weekend or be prepared to suffer the consequences.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2440\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/reptile-show.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2440\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2440\" src=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/reptile-show-350x233.jpg\" alt=\"Reptiles!\" width=\"350\" height=\"233\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2440\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Reptiles!<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Herpetophobia is the scientific name for \u201cthe fear of reptiles\u201d while ophidiophobia means \u201cthe fear of snakes.\u201d On November 12, the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center will host the East Coast Reptile Super Expo featuring hundreds of live snakes and reptiles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The East Coast Reptile Super Expo, which is always a well-attended event, will run from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. this Saturday. Tickets are $10 with children (under five) admitted free.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Many people think snakes and lizards are interesting creatures and maybe even fun pets to own. If you fall into this category, you should check out the show on Saturday. A wide array of reptiles will be on display as part of the popular exhibition, which is an annual event that is closing in on its silver anniversary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">One of the show\u2019s main attractions is a sales exhibit area featuring a large number of vendors with live reptiles, amphibians and arachnids as well as food items, supplies, books, cages, and related accessories.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The roster of very diverse vendors includes AZO Reptiles, Rose\u2019s Reptiles, Dale\u2019s Bearded Dragons, Blake\u2019s Exotic Reptiles, Dower Reptiles &amp; Rodents, Reptile Kingdom, DHA Pythons, Gecko Haven, Skins and Scales,\u00a0Hunger Reptiles, Jungle Emporium, Delaware Turtle,\u00a0Just Lizards, Dragon Fortress,\u00a0Turtle Towns, Garden State Tortoise LLC, Reptile Addicts, Bob\u2019s Critters, MCO Reptiles and Fins, Feathers, Paws &amp; Claws.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The list also includes\u00a0RKZ Rodents, Monstar Reptiles,\u00a0Turtle to Turtle,\u00a0Delaware Valley Herpetarium,\u00a0Newville Dragons, PM Herps,\u00a0Black Jungle Terrarium Supply, VSCV Ventures LLC, Dachiu Dragons,\u00a0Tom Rogan Reptiles,\u00a0Native Exotics, Serpents Plus, Heath\u2019s Frog Farm, Corralus Creations,\u00a0Rogue Reptiles LLC, Jason R Bartolett Captive Bred Reptiles, and Fowler Reptiles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The other show at the Expo will draw a more specialized crowd. The Great American Guitar Show will be held on November 12 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and November 13 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The popular show marks an annual pilgrimage for many guitarists (and other musicians). It features hundreds of manufacturers and dealers who will be buying and selling thousands of new, used and vintage musical instruments and accessories.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Admissions is $12 on Saturday and $10 on Sunday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/del-ant-show.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2441 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/del-ant-show-313x300.jpg\" alt=\"del-ant-show\" width=\"313\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>One of the area\u2019s longest-running traditional events is the Delaware Antiques Show (Chase Center on the Riverfront, Wilmington, Delaware, 800-448-3883, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.winterthur.org\/\"><span class=\"s2\">www.winterthur.org<\/span><\/a>). The event, which has been around for more than 50 years, will be held from November 11-13.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Honored as one of the nation\u2019s most highly acclaimed antiques shows, the annual three-day event presents a large and diverse assemblage of art, antiques and design. With more than 60 top-flight dealers participating, the Delaware Antiques Show highlights the best of American antiques and decorative arts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The show will feature sales displays featuring furniture and decorative accessories from the 17th to the early 20th centuries, including folk art, Native American art, ceramics, needlework, quilts, jewelry, prints, paintings, and rugs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">As usual, the knowledgeable dealers will at their booths answering questions and offering advice to collectors. Visitors to the show can learn from the experts about a variety of different antiques categories, including brass, jewelry, painting, ceramics, silver, textiles and 18th and 19th century furniture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Proceeds from the Delaware Antiques Show benefit the educational programs at Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library. Hours are from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. on Friday, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $15 and include the show catalogue. Children under 12 are admitted free.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If you\u2019re looking for arts and crafts rather than antiques, you\u2019re in good shape this weekend with three topo-flight shows on the area calendar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The 2016 Holiday Fine Craft Sale at Historic Yellow Springs (1685 Art School Road, Chester Springs, 610-827-7414, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yellowsprings.org\/\"><span class=\"s2\">www.yellowsprings.org<\/span><\/a>) November 11-13 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. each day\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The event, which will be held in Historic Yellow Springs\u2019 Washington and Lincoln Building Galleries features a huge selection of artwork and crafts created by many of the area\u2019s top-flight artists and artisans. Some of the featured genres are woodworking, painting, ceramics, jewelry, glass, pottery, photography and fiber arts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Chester Springs Studio is a vibrant arts center at Historic Yellow Springs.\u00a0 Founded in 1978 as an offshoot of Historic Yellow Springs, the Studio grew in reputation as a nationally-known home for the visual arts, particularly in the areas of painting and ceramics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Admission to the popular annual event is $5.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show is the biggest, one of the oldest and unquestionably one of the best craft shows in the Mid-Atlantic region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The 40th Annual Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show will be held November 11-13 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center (12th and Arch streets, Philadelphia, 215-684-7930, <a href=\"http:\/\/pmacraftshow.org\/\"><span class=\"s2\">http:\/\/pmacraftshow.org<\/span><\/a>). The well-attended juried show and sale of contemporary craft, which had over 1,000 applicants, includes approximately 200 of the finest and most respected craft artists in the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Visitors to the show will be able to meet the craft artists, discuss the artisans\u2019 work and purchase their crafts. The show will feature crafts in a variety of categories, including paper, leather, furniture, clay, glass, baskets, jewelry, fiber wearable, metal, wood, mixed media and fiber-decorative works.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In just under 40 years the show has grown from 125 to 195 of the finest craft artists in the nation selected through a highly competitive jury process. This dynamic and premier show has always been in the forefront of craft education by presenting symposia, on-site artist demonstrations, collection and studio tours, room settings of craft furniture and accessories, and student exhibitions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In 2001 a guest artist program was added whereby artists from a single country are selected to participate. Countries that have participated thus far include Japan, England, Ireland, Germany, Finland, Canada, Israel, Korea, Scotland and Lithuania. In an effort to promote craft education, the 2016 Craft Show will devote its guest artists program to emerging artists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show is presented annually by the Women\u2019s Committee and Craft Show Committee of the Philadelphia Museum of Art for the benefit of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Funds raised are used to purchase works of art and craft for the permanent collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, to fund conservation and publication projects\u00a0and to support exhibitions and education programs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Tickets for adults are $18 for one day and $25 for a two-day ticket. Children will be admitted for $5. Each artisan specializes in work that is functional, aesthetic or both. There will be thousands of works on display &#8212; all of which were created one at a time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Exhibitors from Chester County will be Leni Hoch Designs from Glenmoore, Megan\u2019s Jewelry Box from West Chester and Goldentouch Gifts from Oxford.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The new event builds on the long-standing tradition of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen&#8217;s recently retired November fine craft fair, which was held in various locations in the county including F&amp;M College and most recently at the Lancaster County Convention Center.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s4\">The event will be held at <\/span><span class=\"s5\">Spooky Nook Complex <\/span><span class=\"s1\">(<\/span><span class=\"s6\">2913 Spooky Nook Road, Manheim, 717-945-7087, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spookynooksports.com\/\"><span class=\"s2\">http:\/\/www.spookynooksports.com\/<\/span><\/a>). Ticket prices range from $19-$35.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If you\u2019re planning on attending this year\u2019s Chrysanthemum Festival at Longwood Gardens (Route 1, Kennett Square, 610-388-1000, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.longwoodgardens.org\/\"><span class=\"s2\">www.longwoodgardens.org<\/span><\/a>), you better move quickly because the event is down to its final two weekends.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Longwood Gardens celebrates autumn with its annual Chrysanthemum Festival every year.\u00a0The 35th Annual Mum Fest, a top-flight exhibit featuring more than 20,000 colorful, blooming chrysanthemums in Longwood\u2019s huge conservatory, is running now through November 20.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The horticulturalists at Longwood Gardens have grown and developed the mums into a variety of unusual forms. They have groomed chrysanthemums to resemble clouds, torches, spirals, fans, 13-foot arches and more. The stars of the show are Longwood Gardens\u2019 \u201cThousand Bloom\u201d mums.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Thousand Bloom (known in Japan as Ozukuri) is the most exacting and difficult of all the Chrysanthemum training styles. It derives its name for the ambitious goal of a single chrysanthemum plant producing 1,000 perfect blooms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The method for growing the Thousand Bloom originated in China and Japan more than 200 years ago. It is a dying art form with only a few growers in the entire world skilled in the techniques needed to grow this special plant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Another seasonal attraction at the site is Longwood\u2019s \u201cAutumn Colors,\u201d an activity that is running now through November 20. Now is an excellent time to take a nature walk in Longwood\u2019s Meadow Garden, where visitors are surrounded by colorful flowers such as goldenrods and native asters along with meadow grasses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Admission to Longwood Gardens is $23 for adults, $20 for seniors (62+) and $12 for students (ages 5-18).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">By now, you probably have accepted the fact that the Christmas season has arrived. Sure, Thanksgiving is still two weeks away but Christmas marketing and holiday attractions have already taken over.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Anything dealing with \u201cThe Nutcracker\u201d is always a good way to start the Christmas holiday vibe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Historic Odessa Foundation\u2019s 2016 Christmas Holiday Tour is an event with an appeal that spans generations. The tours will be presented now through December 31 in Odessa\u2019s historic district (Main Street, Odessa, Delaware, 302-378-4119, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.historicodessa.org\/\"><span class=\"s2\">www.historicodessa.org<\/span><\/a>). The Historic Houses of Odessa\u2019s National Historic Register Wilson-Warner House has been transformed into vignettes inspired by E.T.A. Hoffmann\u2019s \u201cThe Nutcracker and The Mouse King.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Historic Odessa will celebrate the bicentennial of this classic tale as the National Historic Register Wilson-Warner House is transformed into the home of the Stahlbaums on Christmas Eve. There will also be story vignettes beautifully recreated throughout the 247-year old Wilson-Warner\u2019s period rooms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This classic story, written in 1816, about a girl named Marie (Clara in the ballet) who helps a wooden nutcracker defeat an army of mice is the inspiration for the annual literature-based Christmas exhibit at the Historic Odessa Foundation. For the past 30 years, Historic Odessa has celebrated children\u2019s literature by recreating scenes from the classics in one of its 18th-century museum houses. Visiting public have been treated to the literary works of Charles Dickens, Louisa May Alcott, Jane Austen, Beatrix Potter, and Lewis Carroll.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Another popular attraction is the \u201cStorybook Trees Exhibit,\u201d which is a festive display of Christmas trees that reflect books and works of children\u2019s literature. The trees have been decorated by local families, schools and organizations<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">All of the Historic Odessa Foundation\u2019s museum properties, collectively known as the Historic Houses of Odessa, are open and on display for the 2016 holiday season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Special events and tours will be held throughout the holiday season including \u201cFamilies Cook Series: Holiday Delights\u201d on November 12; \u201cPublic Wreath Workshop\u201d on November 20 and 30; \u201cCandlelight Tours\u201d on December 1, 6, 8, 13, 15 and 20; \u201cChildren\u2019s Holiday Program\u201d on December 4; \u201cFestive Foods\/Hearth Cooking Demonstration\u201d on December 10 and 17; \u201cPaint Your Own Nutcracker\u201d on December 10 and \u201cCurator Candlelight Tour\u201d on December 22.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Historic Houses of Odessa are open Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Sunday from 1 to 4:30 p.m. The last full tour of the Historic Houses starts at 3 p.m. The Houses will be closed on December 24 and 25. Admission to the Historic Odessa Foundation holiday tour is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, and students and free for children (under 6).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This weekend, you can also get a look at German holiday traditions at another special event in Delaware.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The German Christmas Festival, which is also known as Christkindl Markt, will take place November 12 at the Delaware Saengerbund (49 Salem Church Road, Newark, Delaware, 302-366-9454, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.delawaresaengerbund.org\/\"><span class=\"s2\">www.delawaresaengerbund.org<\/span><\/a>). The free event is scheduled to get underway at 11 a.m. and continue through 4 p.m.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The kitchen will open at 11 a.m. and feature a wide array of German cakes and pastries along with a variety of hot food and sandwich items. The Bauernstube (restaurant) will be open all day with food and beverages. A wide array of vendor booths will be set up at the festival featuring imported candy, handmade articles, German Christmas items and ornaments, bakery items, a White Elephant sale and a children\u2019s gift shop.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Live entertainment will be presented all day with dance performances by the Children\u2019s Enzian Volkstanzgruppe at 1:30 p.m. and seasonal music by Enzian Musikanten throughout the day. Santa is scheduled to arrive between 2:30 and 3 p.m. and there will be a holiday raffle at 3:30 p.m.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Now that Christmas activities have begun, Peddler\u2019s Village (Routes 202 and 263, Lahaska, 215-794-4000, <a href=\"http:\/\/peddlersvillage.com\/\"><span class=\"s2\">http:\/\/peddlersvillage.com<\/span><\/a>) is starting its celebration and that means there will be a lot of activity at the site over the next few weeks. Peddler\u2019s Village\u2019s\u00a0\u201cKick Off to the Holidays\u201d\u00a0will take place on November 11 from 6:30-8:30 p.m.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Visitors to the Village can join special guest Mrs. Claus for festive fun and mini-lightings in a different Village neighborhood each night leading up to the Village-wide\u00a0Grand Illumination Celebration\u00a0on November 21. Village shops will be open until 9 p.m. with a distinctive assortment of merchandise, special promotions and refreshments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Grand Illumination Celebration, which is scheduled for November 18, will showcase thousands of tiny white lights outlining the Village\u2019s buildings, colorful lights with less-than-common colors (teal, peach, and fuscia) adorning the trees and shrubs and a landscaped backdrop featuring a group of reindeer glowing in white light. Santa will arrive to turn on the lights and officially mark the beginning of the event.
