{"id":22412,"date":"2016-12-14T10:40:51","date_gmt":"2016-12-14T15:40:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?p=22412"},"modified":"2016-12-14T10:40:55","modified_gmt":"2016-12-14T15:40:55","slug":"cashing-in-eight-charged-with-taking-55-tons-of-nickel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?p=22412","title":{"rendered":"Cashing in: eight charged with taking 55 tons of nickel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Mike McGann<\/strong>, <em>Editor, The Times<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2713\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/NickleTheft.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2713\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2713\" src=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/NickleTheft-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2713\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">An example of one of the &#8220;super sacks&#8221; of nickel reportedly stolen from ArcelorMittal in South Coatesville.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>SOUTH COATESVILLE \u2014 While the good old nickel coin might not seem like it is worth much these days, its namesake metal, which makes up 25% of the coin, is a lot more valuable and apparently was targeted for theft in a big way \u2014 to the tune of 55 tons \u2014 by workers at\u00a0a local steel and mining company.<\/p>\n<p>Eight people were charged Wednesday with stealing and reselling the metal, which currently has a market value of more than $500,000 (pricing for the metal was $5.17 per pound in midday Wednesday trading, according to Kitco News, a leading monitor of the metals industry), although law enforcement sources said the company was paying more for the metal, between $8 and $9 per pound, placing the hit to the company closer to $1 million. Nickel is used in steel production, as an example, stainless steel is made up from iron, nickel and chromium, according to the Nickel Institute.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>All eight were either employees of ArcelorMittal or one of the company&#8217;s contractors, Chester County District Attorney Tom Hogan said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The eight defendants are: Dane K. Douglas (age<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>39),<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Corey<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Douglas<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>(age 36), Aaron L. Anderson (age 36), George<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Glassco<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>(age<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>56), Richard<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>R.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Cooper (age 54), Maurice Dennis (age 26), Jeffrey Shuler<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>(age<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>55),<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>and<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Marcus<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Pearce (age 25). Dane Douglas and Corey Douglas<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>are brothers \u2014 and the latter is the only individual charged who did not work at the factory, officials said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;The<\/span> most difficult crime to stop is an inside <span class=\"s8\">job,&#8221; Hogan said in a statement. &#8220;<\/span>The conspirators knew exactly how to evade detection while carrying out their crimes. It was only because of the outstanding work by the Chester County Detectives and ArcelorMittal&#8217;s own security team that the full scope of this crime was uncovered.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Because of the weight of the nickel, stealing it, investigators said, required a fairly complex plan and a number of people working together to conceal the alleged theft from the company.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The nickel is stored at the ArcelorMittal factory in <span class=\"s1\">&#8220;super<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span>sacks,&#8221;<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>which weigh<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a01,000s<\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>of pounds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Investigators said that the eight\u00a0had access to the area at ArcelorMittal where the nickel was stored in super sacks.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 They, it is alleged,<\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>would<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>arrange to have<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>a super sack moved <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>to a different area of the factory, to allow it to be accessed for the theft.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Authorities said there was a clear plan and division of responsibilities among the eight charged. Some managed the\u00a0movement of the nickel<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>within<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>the<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>factory, while others worked to\u00a0get the nickel out of the factory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The eight, investigators said,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>used code to communicate with each other, advising when the nickel was available and had been moved to trigger a theft. Those who worked in security<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>were \u00a0allegedly paid<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>to<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>look the other way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The eight\u00a0used different ways to get the nickel out of the factory, some more effective than others. Sometimes,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>they<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>used<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>backpacks<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>and<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>private<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>vehicles. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 Another time, authorities said,<\/span>\u00a0they loaded an entire super sack of nickel onto a box truck. The weight in the rear of the truck was so heavy that it caused the front wheels of the truck to lift off the ground and almost tip the truck over<span class=\"s3\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Once the eight\u00a0had <span class=\"s1\">the <\/span>nickel <span class=\"s1\">out <\/span>of <span class=\"s1\">the<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span>factory, authorities said they re-sold the nickel<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">at <\/span>PASCO Incorporated, a metal recycling<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>company<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>in<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Philadelphia<span class=\"s2\">.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span>PASCO bought the nickel <span class=\"s1\">for $4 per <\/span>pound,\u00a0somewhat lower than current market value and less than half of what ArcelorMittal had been paying for the metal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">PASCO issued checks to the defendants for the stolen <span class=\"s4\">nickel. And<\/span>\u00a0eight charged individuals\u00a0deposited those checks <span class=\"s4\">into <\/span>their <span class=\"s4\">own <\/span>bank accounts, which investigators said provided\u00a0<span class=\"s4\">a <\/span>convenient <span class=\"s4\">road <\/span>map for the detectives to track the amount of the thefts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s4\">The <\/span>thefts took place over a period of <span class=\"s4\">years, authorities said<\/span><span class=\"s2\">. <\/span>The defendants stole a total of <span class=\"s4\">110,704 pounds <\/span>of <span class=\"s4\">nickel<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span>from ArcelorMittal,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>causing a total <span class=\"s4\">loss to the company\u00a0<\/span>of<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>$911,093.92.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">&#8220;By stealing from their own company, these defendants were taking food off the table from their own colleagues,&#8221; Hogan said.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0&#8220;<\/span>This type<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>of theft cuts into the company&#8217;s bottom line, leading to reduced <span class=\"s1\">sa<\/span><span class=\"s2\">laries <\/span>and layoffs. These defendants betrayed their<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>own friends and<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>co-workers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Seven of the eight have been arrested, Hogan said, with Richard Cooper remaining at large in Texas.
