I was thrilled to witness, first hand, the energy of a runway show. It was a revealing introduction as to how the inspiration of haute couture trickles down to the trends that end up in our favorite stores.

Great fashion is NOT for “females only.” I think that men are every bit as concerned about their appearance…even if they won’t admit it. So guys, here are my Top 10 Tips for injecting some life into your wardrobe:

Ditch the pleated pants. Flat front is the way to go. Not only will you have a slimmer appearance, you won’t look like 1980 called.

Ditto for the “Dad Jeans.” I realize the resurgence in popularity of the “Mom Jean” may make this confusing, but, trust me. If your denim can be described as “bleached” or “white washed” and has a waistline several inches above your navel, it’s time to go shopping.

Match your accessories. If you have brown shoes, wear a brown belt, etc. etc.

Add color. There is nothing wrong with a crisp, white button-down…however, yawn fest. Adding a pop of color will elevate your basics and bring a bit of pizazz to your closet.

Match socks to your shirt, tie or jacket. Do not match your socks to your shoes. Bold socks can be a fun addition to an otherwise conservative outfit. Make them an accessory instead of just a basic necessity.

Buy a shoe that is not a sneaker! I realize that sneakers hold a place near & dear to a dude’s heart…but, can we please try on something else? Why not a suede ankle boot? There are plenty of occasions where a sneaker just won’t cut it. My kids vehemently oppose this opinion…but, I’m sticking to my guns here.

Heave-ho the hoodie. Do I really need to explain this one? I understand that they are comfortable. But, there are plenty of alternatives that look a million times better. Heading to a workout is one thing…but, take it off after the gym. I beg of you.

When in doubt, try monochromatic. The easiest way to upgrade your style is to pick one color and wear it head to toe. IMPORTANT TIP: not the exact shade for everything. In other words, try a light grey sweater with charcoal pants and a graphite boot. BOOM. Dressed to impress.

Layering is key. Pair a gingham button down shirt under a solid colored sweater or a vintage t-shirt under a fitted blazer. Keep it simple.

Try a turtleneck? OK…I’m sneaking this last one in. Turtlenecks as an alternative to a button-down were all over the runways of Fashion Week. However, I realize that for a lot of men this is reeeeeeeally coming out of your comfort zone. Chillax. You never know until you try.

What are your best fashion tips?
