{"id":23410,"date":"2017-03-09T07:55:14","date_gmt":"2017-03-09T12:55:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?p=23410"},"modified":"2017-03-09T07:55:23","modified_gmt":"2017-03-09T12:55:23","slug":"on-stage-delicate-steve-is-a-man-of-many-talents","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?p=23410","title":{"rendered":"On Stage: Delicate Steve is a man of many talents"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>By Denny Dyroff<\/strong>,\u00a0<\/span><em><span class=\"s1\">Staff Writer, The Times<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3438\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/delicate-steve.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3438\" class=\"wp-image-3438 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/delicate-steve-350x197.gif\" width=\"350\" height=\"197\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3438\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Delicate Steve<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The weekend\u2019s music schedule will shift into high gear on Friday night but area fans can get ready to rock before the weekend arrives by attending the show by Delicate Steve on March 9 at Underground Arts (1200 Callowhill Street, Philadelphia, <a href=\"http:\/\/undergroundarts.org\/\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>http:\/\/undergroundarts.org<\/b><\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Delicate Steve is the stage name of musician Steve Marion, a multi-instrumentalist who leads the band of the same name. Marion has developed a musical style in which you can hear a variety of influences \u2013 rock, pop, surf guitar, African rhythms, Americana and prog rock.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Delicate Steve is now touring in support of his new album \u201cThis Is Steve\u201d and the album\u2019s first single \u201cTomorrow.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI made the album in about 11 days,\u201d said Marion, during a phone interview Monday from his home in Brooklyn, New York. \u201cI did it in the summer of 2015 at a friend\u2019s studio in the country called Outlier Inn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI recorded the whole album by myself. I\u2019ve done all there of my albums that way. I write songs for myself and then the band fills in when I take them on the road. I write and play guitar, keys and drums. I use it all to help me compose.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cMy method of songwriting depends. Each song is pretty different. I go back-and-forth and write in different ways. Maybe writing on piano is the most common thing. I did my first two albums in my basement using ProTools.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Delicate Steve\u2019s first two albums, both on the Luaka Bop label, were \u201cWondervisions\u201d in 2011 and \u201cPositive Force\u201d in 2012.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe long gap between my last two albums was because I was keeping pretty busy,\u201d said Marion. \u201cI was working on a lot of music during that time\u2014mostly rock music.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cBut, it wasn\u2019t for my band. I was in another band called Saint Rich. We put an album out called \u2018Beyond the Drone\u2019 and toured for a couple years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe reason I came back and did a solo album now is because I just felt ready. As I was putting the songs together for \u2018This Is Steve,\u2019 I saw a vibe develop \u2013 more of an inclusive vibe.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Now, Marion is taking the new songs on the road with a band.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe tour band just sort of happened,\u201d said Marion. \u201cIt was a matter of seeing who was around and available to go out on tour. It\u2019s a pretty new band for this tour. It\u2019s a four-piece with bass, drums and two guitars. The other guitarist also plays keys.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe\u2019re focusing on songs from the new album. All of them have been translating live pretty well. And, both will perform at this year\u2019s 11th annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/HometownHeroesWSTW\/\"><span class=\"s4\">Hometown Heroes WSTW<\/span><\/a> Homey Awards Ceremony. The event will get underway at 7 p.m. at the World Caf\u00e9 Live at the Queen (500 North Market Street, Wilmington, 302- 994-1400,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.queen.worldcafelive.com\/\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>www.queen.worldcafelive.com<\/b><\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Scheduled performers at Friday\u2019s festive event are Nadjah Nicole, Nalani &amp; Sarina, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/TheLateSaints\/\"><span class=\"s4\">The Late Saints<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/jfaye\"><span class=\"s4\">John Faye<\/span><\/a> &amp; those Meddling Kids and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/InThePresenceOfWolves\/\"><span class=\"s4\">In The Presence Of Wolves<\/span><\/a>. Additionally, all the artists who have been nominated for Song-of-the-Year will perform their nominated songs. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/homeys-wstw-feature.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-3440\" src=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/homeys-wstw-feature.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"203\" \/><\/a>Nadjah Nicole has established a very strong regional following throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. And, she also has had a good bit of national exposure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI was a contestant on \u2018The Voice\u2019 in 2015,\u201d said Nicole, during a phone interview Wednesday afternoon from her home in Claymont, Delaware.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI was a finalist. I also was one of four first time ever \u2018comeback artists.\u2019 Each coach was allowed to bring back one contender from earlier in the season to join their team.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cBeing on \u2018The Voice\u2019 gave me a lot more respect. But, nothing huge came out of it. In reality, you come off the show and come home \u2013 no record deal or anything like that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI\u2019m not signed to a label. I\u2019m an independent and have one EP that was released last year\u2013 \u2018Journey to Become Nadjah Nicole.\u2019\u00a0 Now, I have a mixtape EP called \u2018From My Lips.\u2019 It\u2019s coming out in April. It\u2019s mostly R&amp;B, hip-hop beats and soul. I\u2019ll probably be doing two songs from the mixtape at Friday\u2019s show,\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Even though Nicole is just 25, she has been singing for a long time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cMy mom and dad got me into music,\u201d said Nicole, who was Artist-of-the-Year at the 2016 Homeys. \u201cThey forced me into the church choir at Bethel A.M.E. where they put me out front to sing solo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWhen I was doing that, I was happy to see how people reacted to my singing. It gives me a high when I see people get excited to hear me sing. When I was 14, I did my first talent show \u2013 Omega Psi Phi Talent Hunt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cPeople would hear me at talent shows and church and tell me that I should pursue a career as a singer. So, I started doing open mics and karaoke.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cA friend of my dad \u2013 Jerry Anthony Thompson \u2013 has a recording studio called Jat World Studio. So, I started recording at his studio. I did a bunch of shows and the did my first show at the World Caf\u00e9 at the Queen when I was 18.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Nicole has added to her ever-growing fan base with annual performances at Wilmington\u2019s highly-respected Ladybug Music Festival.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cMy first Ladybug was 2012,\u201d said Nicole. \u201cI\u2019ve played it every year but one. That was 2015 when I was away doing \u2018The Voice.\u2019 I really love playing the Ladybug Festival.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Nalani &amp; Sarina are also Ladybug Festival favorites. Last year, they were co-headliners along with Nicole.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Nalani &amp; Sarina are 23-year-old twin sisters from central New Jersey who have been building a huge fan base in the Mid-Atlantic region for the last four years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">They have performed at venues all over Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey &#8212; a variety of venues around the area \u2014 including Kennett Flash, the Eagleview Concert Series in Exton, and Steel City Coffeehouse in Phoenixville.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The highly-talented siblings have already established themselves as top-flight vocalists, songwriters, and multi-instrumentalists. With roots based in rhythm-and-blues, soul, rock and especially funk, the sisters create vocal harmonies that only twins can make.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">At last year\u2019s Homey Awards, they took home the trophy for EP-of-the-Year for their record \u201cScattered World.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe\u2019re identical twins,\u201d said Nalani. \u201cWe both started playing classical piano when were six and then studied operatic vocals when we were in sixth grade.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cClassical music and opera provided good basics for us. Our mom was a folkie so we listened to a lot of folk music when we were young \u2014 great songwriters like Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan. And, we\u2019ve listened to a lot of classic rock.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe always have the funk. It\u2019s impossible for us to keep the funk out. We\u2019ve always had funk in our blood. We play shows with just the two of us, it always sounds more singer-songwriter. She released her first album \u201cTeardrops and Lollipops\u201d in 2008 on Pupsnake Records.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">She followed with \u201cDeceivers Are Achievers (EP)\u201d in 2009 (Pupsnake Records); \u201cCharlatans At The Garden Gate\u201d album in 2011 (American Myth); \u201cDecks the Halls (Christmas EP) in 2011 (Pupsnake Records); and \u201cCAVES\u201d in 2013 (Pupsnake Records).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cMy new album is coming out in July,\u201d said Tristen, during a phone interview Wednesday afternoon from a tour stop in Northampton, Massachusetts. \u201cIt\u2019s called \u2018Sneaker Waves.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI\u2019ll be touring on my own when the album comes out. I\u2019m just doing this tour because Vanessa asked me to do it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI went into this album without any flavor or vibe in mind. I let the songs decide what they were going to sound like. One thing I kept in mind was knowing that they would be played live. It\u2019s minimalist pop \u2013 keyboard and guitar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe recorded 30 songs, kept the ones we liked and added a few more. I have a home studio with my husband Buddy Hughen and that\u2019s where I do my recording.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cHe is a guitar player and an awesome engineer. We both have the same interests. Our house has no living room or dining room. It\u2019s a huge studio. We both are fine with sacrificing our space.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cBuddy and I have been together nine years. We met in the local scene in Nashville. He was in a band called Eureka Gold. I went to see them play and said \u2013 I want to date someone form this band. Buddy was the best looking so he was the one I dated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cOver the last five years, we\u2019ve become very collaborative. I write all the songs. Sometimes, he\u2019ll bring a riff. The collaborative part is the work on production.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cOur goal is to have an analog studio. Buddy works in the box. We do have a lot of vintage gear but our recording is all digital. Those tools complete our ability to be self-sufficient.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">There are times when Tristen performs with a band in the Nashville are but touring is still done solo \u2013 sort of.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWhen I tour, it\u2019s with Buddy,\u201d said Tristen. \u201cHe plays guitar and keyboards. In our shows now, we play about one-third from the first album, one-third from the second album and one-third from the new album. The band has toured worldwide and has treated fans around the world to its unique blend of a variety of music genres including rock and roll, swing, R&amp;B, boogie-woogie, soul and a number of different blues styles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Roomful of Blues has received five Grammy Award nominations and seven Blues Music Awards, including \u201cBlues Band Of The Year\u201d in 2005. The Down Beat International Critics Poll has twice selected Roomful of Blues as \u201cBest Blues Band.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Over the years, more than 50 different musicians have been part of Roomful of Blues\u2019 line-up, including vocalist\/guitarist Duke Robillard, vocalist Lou Ann Barton, keyboardist Junior Brantley and trumpeter Fred Jackson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Roomful of Blues is currently an eight-piece unit led by guitarist Chris Vachon and long-time tenor and alto sax player Rich Lataille. The other members are Mark Earley (saxophone), Rusty Scott (piano, Hammond B-3 organ), Chris Anzalone (drums), Doug Woolverton (trumpet), John Turner (bass) and\u00a0Phil Pemberton (vocals).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Roomful of Blues\u2019 latest album is titled \u201c45 Live.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe used to do one every couple years,\u201d said Vachon, during a phone interview Wednesday afternoon from his home in Rhode Island. \u201cBut, we haven\u2019t been in the studio lately. We\u2019ll probably do another studio album sometime soon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe did a live album a few years ago because we hadn\u2019t done a live album in years. We recorded the album in 2013. It was our 45th year being together so we decided to do a live record.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe recorded it in Rhode Island at a club called Ocean Mist in Wakefield. We recorded three nights in a row there and there were sell-out crowds every night. It\u2019s our favorite little bar. We worked there a lot before so we knew it was going to be a good situation. We set up with a control room on the side.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe played the same set every night. When it was time to put the album together, I ended up picking stuff from all three shows. There were a lot of people there for every show. It was St. Patrick\u2019s Day weekend so people were really in a party mood.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Not many bands stay together for more than 10-15 years. Very few make it past 25. Passing a 40th anniversary is almost unheard of. Roomful of Blues is less than two years away from its golden anniversary (50 years) but, according to Vachon, there is no great secret to the band\u2019s ability to keep it going.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWhat\u2019s the reason for our longevity &#8212; it\u2019s the music we like to play,\u201d said Vachon. \u201cWe\u2019ve had our ups and downs. This particular line-up has been together about seven years \u2013 except that we just got a new drummer. Rich is the only original member left.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cSome years we\u2019ve toured more than others. We currently play about 150 shows a year. We used to do more but it\u2019s becoming harder to do weekday dates. Lots of venues aren\u2019t even doing weekday nights.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe band keeps getting new fans and there are a lot of older people who have been listening to us for years. For young people, their only exposure to us has been at festivals. We play a lot of festivals every year.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">With a 48-year history and 20-plus albums from which to draw songs, choosing a set list for a show can be easy and difficult at the same time &#8212; what to play and what to leave out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe always mix it up,\u201d said Vachon. \u201cWe\u2019ve got a lot of stuff from over the years. We\u2019ve got so many albums, it\u2019s hard to just pull one out. We try to keep some variety there with tempos and beats &#8212; trying to mix it up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWhat I like to do is have a variety of stuff so people aren\u2019t listening to the same beat over and over again. It\u2019s more of a journey instead of 10 shuffles in a row. They were joined by their neighbor Josh LeMay as lead vocalist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The following year, the oldest brother Matt Dudley passed away. The band members decided to carry on and enlisted Sammy Boller as lead guitarist. A while later, Sam Collins replaced Greg Dudley on bass to bring the band to its current configuration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cCitizen Zero has been together for about six years,\u201d said LeMay, during a phone interview Tuesday afternoon from a tour stop in Montreal, Quebec. \u201cAs a signed band, it\u2019s been a little over a year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cMe and Dudley grew up together in Rochester Hills. The band\u2019s line-up has changed a little bit over the years but the music is still the same. At the same time, the music has changed a little.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIt\u2019s different in that as you get older, your mentality changes \u2013 what you want in life changes. We\u2019ve moved from teen angst to more poignant things to say.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In its early days, the band recorded two EPs \u2013 \u201cCitizen Zero\u201d in 2011 and \u201cLife Explodes\u201d in 2012. Citizen Zero released its debut album \u201cState of Mind\u201d in 2016.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe recorded \u2018State of Mind\u2019 over a two-year period,\u201d said LeMay. \u201cWe made the whole album prior to signing with Wind-Up Records. Now, we\u2019re signed to Anti- Records.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe had so many songs that we recorded over a crazy, volatile time in our lives. From that chaos, the album was born. For example, the song \u2018Love Let It\u2019 was written about overcoming ridiculous odds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe song \u2018Lure and Persuade,\u2019 which is our new single, was written during a time when I was searching for something.\u00a0But, I spent a lot of time looking for it in all the wrong places and being with the wrong people.\u00a0I was trying to fill voids in my life \u2013 trying to fit a mold \u2013 and that wasn\u2019t right. That all came out in \u2018Lure and Persuade.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cOur first single \u2018Go (Let Me Save You)\u2019 charting at <b>#15<\/b> on Active Rock Radio and \u2018Lure and Persuade\u2019 is climbing the charts right now. We\u2019re still touring in support of the album.
