{"id":24202,"date":"2017-05-11T18:31:03","date_gmt":"2017-05-11T22:31:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?p=24202"},"modified":"2017-05-11T18:31:07","modified_gmt":"2017-05-11T22:31:07","slug":"on-stage-seth-walker-rocks-his-roots","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?p=24202","title":{"rendered":"On Stage: Seth Walker rocks his roots"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>By Denny Dyroff<\/strong>,\u00a0<\/span><em><span class=\"s1\">Staff Writer, The Times<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4017\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/seth-walker.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4017\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4017\" src=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/seth-walker-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4017\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Seth Walker<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Seth Walker\u2019s show on May 11 at MilkBoy Philly (1100 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, 215- 925-6455, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.milkboyphilly.com\/\"><span class=\"s2\">www.milkboyphilly.com<\/span><\/a>) may have a large city downtown location but the vibe inside the venue will be country \u2013 with a healthy dose of the blues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Over the past 10 years, Seth Walker has become recognized as one of the most revered modern roots artists in the United States &#8212; an artist with the gift for combining melody and lyric alongside a rich, Gospel-drenched, Southern-inflected voice with a knack for getting around on the guitar.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Walker\u2019s latest studio album, \u201cGotta Get Back,\u201d which was produced by Jano Rix of The Wood Brothers, is another gem that adds to his reputation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI recorded it in Nashville at Southern Ground Studio,\u201d said Walker, during a phone interview Monday as he travelled from Akron, Ohio to a show in Pittsburgh.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI started making the album at the end of 2015 and it came out in September 2016. It usually takes a year to get it all together.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Walker, who is the son of classically-trained musicians, grew up on a commune in rural North Carolina, the son of classically trained musicians. He played cello long before discovering the six-string in his 20s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI grew up studying classical music,\u201d said Walker. \u201cThe first contemporary music I heard was Willie Nelson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI liked cello. It wasn\u2019t something I was super passionate about but it also wasn\u2019t something taught to me with an iron fist. It wasn\u2019t until I got to college that I discovered electric guitar \u2013 artists like Stevie Ray, Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton. I was going to East Carolina University. Once I heard the music, I never went to class. I just played guitar all day in my dorm room. My parents were upset a little when I dropped out but now they\u2019re my biggest fans.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Actually, they\u2019re more than fans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cOn \u2018Gotta Get Back,\u2019 my father composed the arrangements and played cello, and my mother and sister played violins,\u201d said Walker.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWhen I was making the album, I worked closely with Jano Rix, who is the drummer for the Wood Brothers. Oliver Wood produced my previous record and I went on tour with them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI\u2019d bring songs to Jano and we\u2019d tweak them. We were on tour together and we\u2019d work on the songs as we went along. After the tour, we worked together in Nashville. I live in New Orleans but I got to Nashville a lot.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cAs we were making the album, unbeknownst to me, a vibe developed. When we looked at the tunes as a whole, they all had a lot of movement \u2013with themes like moving on, gotta get back, and fire in the belly to get back.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIt also had a gospel feel we didn\u2019t plan on. I don\u2019t know where that came from. But, gospel, blues, jazz \u2013 they\u2019re all connected. Look at Ray Charles. He had a big gospel influence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cOn this tour, I\u2019m playing a lot of songs from the new album along with a bunch of older stuff \u2013 and some new tunes. It\u2019s a trio \u2013 bass, drums and myself. I do a lot of trio stuff. From NPR Music and WXPN, fans are treated to a live mix of roots rock, folk, country and more every week. Shows are free and open to the public.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">On May 19, Philadelphia-based Low Cut Connie\u00a0will release its fourth studio album \u201cDirty\u00a0Pictures (Part 1),\u201d which will be\u00a0available worldwide via\u00a0Contender Records.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Low Cut Connie &#8212; Adam Weiner, James Everhart, Will Donnelly, Larry Scotton, Lucas Rinz \u2013 recorded the new album at the legendary Ardent Studios in Memphis, Tennessee.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe recorded the album at the studio in Memphis last July,\u201d said Weiner. \u201cIt\u2019s the home of Alex Chilton\u2019s band Big Star. I\u2019m pals with drummer Jody Stephenson, who is the last living member of Big Star.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cLast year at SXSW, we talked about going to Ardent to record. I produced the record myself with great help from engineer Adam Hill and also from Dave Chale.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe were in the studio for 12 days recording. Then, we went back in the fall to mix it and again in January to finish everything. We did all the recording analog and we\u2019ve also cut it straight to vinyl.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">If there is a \u201cPart 1,\u201d there must be a \u201cPart 2.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201c\u2018Part 1,\u2019 comes out this May and \u2018Part 2\u2019 will be out next year,\u201d said Weiner. \u201cI felt strongly that these were two distinct albums. There is a thematic\/vibe difference that will be obvious to people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe \u2018Part 1\u2019 vibe is dirtier \u2013 a little raunchier. The sounds are a little crunchy. The \u2018Part 2\u2019 vibe \u2013 you\u2019re just gonna have to wait until then to find out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cOur last album \u2018Hi Honey\u2019 came out in 2015 but we recorded it starting at the end of 2013. So, I had quite a lot of songs built up by the time we headed to Ardent last year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWhen you\u2019re writing songs, you never know how they come. I write on piano and have my own little voodoo that I do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Low Cut Connie, which was formed in Philly in 2010, is Weiner\u2019s band. Weiner performed as a solo artist in Bew York City prior to starting Low Cut Connie.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Weiner started the project that would become Low Cut Connie with former members Dan Finnemore (from Birmingham, U.K.) and Neil Duncan (from Gainesville, Florida). The band&#8217;s name refers to a waitress who often wore low-cut tops at a restaurant near where Weiner grew up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cLow Cut Connie, like certain other bands, has a rotating cast of characters and I\u2019ve been the ringleader,\u201d said Weiner, a South Philly resident who grew up in Cherry Hill, New Jersey.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe\u2019ve had 13 different people in the band in the last five years. The current line-up has been together a couple years. The only recent addition is Lucas Rinz.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cOur show is like a rock-and-roll review. The band just released a video for the song \u201cGod Dam\u201d and it\u2019s already amassed over 1.2 million views.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe started recording \u2018The Stage\u2019 in the summer of \u00a02016,\u201d said Gates, during a phone interview Wednesday evening from a tour stop in Baltimore, Maryland.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe kinda messed around for a while. We didn\u2019t know which direction we would go. We stopped taking about it while drinking together at night and talked about it with coffee at lunch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThat was where the space and science themes came in. And, it was when we first thought about these different soundscapes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe Stage\u201d features 11 ambitious tracks tied together by an Artificial Intelligence theme. Inspired by the writings of Carl Sagan and Elon Musk, the album is the band\u2019s first thematic release.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Its epic 15-minute-plus closing track, \u201cExist,\u201d features a guest appearance by award-winning astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson giving a spoken word performance he penned specifically for the album.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe\u2019re all into reading about Artificial Intelligence,\u201d said Gates. \u201cOur singer got really excited about writing lyrics about it. And, we\u2019re all admirers of Stephen Hawking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u2018The concept made it a lot easier to make this album. Our prior album \u2018Hail to the King\u2019 seemed more simple but it was more difficult to write.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWith this album, we had more fun because it was progressive. We could throw in the kitchen sink if we wanted. We did a lot of experimentation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe had Joe Barresi as our co-producer. He\u2019s an amazing aural painter. He has all this gear and love to create original sounds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe demo-ed almost everything in its entirety to get the counterpoint lead lines. Zack\u2019s little brother Matt Baker helped put the finishing touches on the orchestration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIt got a little difficult after four months of recording. So, we took a small break to develop some ideas. Then, we came back with inspiration. We had a lot of fun finishing the record.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Unfortunately, Avenged Sevenfold fans will not hear too many songs from \u201cThe Stage\u201d in this show.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThis is Metallica\u2019s tour so we don\u2019t get to do a real long set like we do when we headline,\u201d said Gates. \u201cWe\u2019re doing what we call our \u2018slambanger\u2019 set.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe\u2019ll play our hits, our new single \u2018God Damn\u2019 and the single \u2018The Stage.\u2019 We go all the way back to 2003\u2019s \u2018Waking the Fallen\u2019 for songs the fans want to hear.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe only get to do a 55- or 60-minute set. It is kind of a humbling experience because we can sell out arenas and play for two hours. Their discography includes eight studio albums, four live albums and several charting singles. They announced their final break-up in 2015.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The band\u2019s debut album was \u201cS<\/span><span class=\"s4\">hake Your Money Maker<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u201d in 1990 followed by its landmark album \u201c<\/span><span class=\"s4\">The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion<\/span><span class=\"s1\">,\u201d which was released May 12, 992.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">On May 12, the Ardmore Music Hall (23 East Lancaster Avenue, Ardmore, 610-649-8389,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ardmoremusic.com\/\"><span class=\"s2\">www.ardmoremusic.com<\/span><\/a>) will host a special show &#8212; the \u201c25th Anniversary Celebration of The Black Crowes\u2019 \u2018Southern Harmony and Musical Companion\u2019\u201d featuring Taller along with a host of guest artists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The core band includes: Rekardo Lee: lead guitar; Jeff White: lead guitar; Alec Meltzer: drums; Chris Bicksler: bass; Justin diFebbo: keys; Ansel Barnum: harmonica; and Freddie Berman: percussion \u2013 with singers Hannah Taylor, Ali Wadsworth, Paul Keen,\u00a0Dan Reed, Nik Greeley, Casey Parker, and Michael Baker.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cJeff White and I were sitting in at the Dawson Street Pub talking about how \u2018Southern Harmony and Musical Companion\u2019 is our favorite album,\u201d said Lee, during a phone interview this week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThen, we realized that Friday May 12 is actually the 25th anniversary of the release. I found that Ardmore had the date open and we set up the show.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201c\u2018SH&amp;MC\u2019 had four Number 1 hits \u2013 \u2018Remedy,\u2019 \u2018Thorn in My Pride,\u2019 \u2018Sting Me\u2019 and \u2018Hotel Illness.\u2019 It was a Number 1 album on Billboard\u2019s charts \u2013 and a return to a classic rock, guitar-centric sound which was missing from radio.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cNow, the Crowes are super relevant again because\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/themagpiesalute.com\/\"><span class=\"s5\">http:\/\/themagpiesalute.com\/<\/span><\/a>\u00a0is a reunion of the guitarists from the album &#8212; Rich Robinson and Marc Ford. Also, Chris Robinson is still touring. So, people do care.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Taylor and Lee go back several years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe met three years ago in the Philadelphia music scene,\u201d said Taylor, during a phone interview Wednesday afternoon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI had done some solo stuff and sang as a guest with different bands. He asked me if I wanted to form a rockabilly band with him. For the last three years, that has been my main band.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cA little while ago, he said that he and Jeff were nerding out about 25 years to the exact day. I was on board from the start \u2013 even though I didn\u2019t know what I was getting myself into.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Taylor needed an introduction to \u201cSouthern Harmony and Musical Companion.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI had never heard the album,\u201d said Taylor. \u201cActually, I had never heard any of The Black Crowes\u2019 stuff except their radio hits. I realized I had been missing out on a lot of great music.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Lee assembled a strong crew of musicians for this show.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cDan Reed is a DJ on WXPN,\u201d said Lee. \u201cPaul Keen fronts Pawnshop Roses, who are opening. Casey Parker is a bar owner and well-known personality in Philly\u2014and a killer singer. Ali Wadsworth is one of Philly\u2019s best singers. Nik Greeley fronts Swift Technique &#8212; and works at Ardmore.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIt\u2019s a bunch of good friends, and we\u2019re having a blast doing this. To me, this record is in the same category as \u2018Zep II,\u2019 \u2018Exile on Mainstreet\u2019&#8230;you name it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThis is just so important in my learning to play guitar and work in bands. I&#8217;ve been busy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI have allowed myself a breather while I worked on my new CD, have had a song included in an upcoming play about the late Harvey Milk, which is currently being worked on and I&#8217;ve continued on my adventures as a home owner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cAll this along with the business of music and only 24 hours in a day (you know how that goes). So, here&#8217;s what&#8217;s up \u2013 my new CD \u201cAnother Place, Another Time\u201d will be officially released April 7, 2017.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The record is out and A\u00f1el has been performing a series of shows to celebrate its release. On of those shows is scheduled for May 12 at the Steel City Coffee House (203 Bridge Street, Phoenixville, 610-933-4043, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.steelcitycoffeehouse.com\/\"><span class=\"s2\">www.steelcitycoffeehouse.com<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cEverything is going well,\u201d said A\u00f1el, during a phone interview Wednesday afternoon from her home in Philadelphia. \u201cSo far \u2013 so good. I\u2019ve been doing a lot of CD release shows.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI started working on the album last fall with Dale Melton, my band mate and co-producer,\u201d said A\u00f1el. \u201cIt\u2019s difficult at times because we use different musicians for the sessions and we have to work around their other commitments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cDale is an excellent engineer. We worked together on my last record \u2018I Can See Bliss From Here\u2019 and it went really well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe recorded \u2018Another Place, Another Time\u2019 at his studio out in the country &#8212; Sandbox at\u00a0Buck Hollow\u00a0Farm. It\u2019s a really quiet place in the Coatesville area. We worked on it in the fall and the winter and we were done.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Ironically, both A\u00f1el and Melton are twins. Dale and Dennis have been performing together since the 1970s with the Melton Brothers Band.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI write a lot,\u201d said A\u00f1el, who moved to Philadelphia from New York over a decade ago. \u201cSome of the songs on the album were written a while ago. There are songs that take a long time to finish writing and some that are really quick.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe song \u2018Forgotten\u2019 on the new album \u2013 I wrote the music in one session and then wrote the lyrics in one session. Writing takes a lot of work \u2013 writing and rewriting \u2013 but not always.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cOne of the new songs &#8212; \u2018I\u2019ll Never Forget You\u2019&#8211; \u00a0took a minute to write. It was inspired by the death of a friend of mine \u2013 Philadelphia\u2019s legendary session guitarist Jef Lee Johnson.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0\u201cI Can See Bliss From Here\u201d was released in 2013 \u2013 four years after her previous release \u201cEvery Second In Between\u201d (which won three New York Music Awards). Another four years passed until the release of \u201cAnother Place, Another Time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe reason there was a long gap between albums is money,\u201d said A\u00f1el. \u201cPeople don\u2019t realize that it takes money to make records. It takes time and money to make a record. It\u2019s never for lack of material.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A\u00f1el\u2019s music shows influences of jazz, folk, Latin, pop and blues. A\u00f1el, who is a New York-born Cuban-African American, came by these influences naturally.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI\u2019ve never referred to myself as jazz but I have jazz inclinations based on people I listen to,\u201d said A\u00f1el, who grew up in the South Bronx.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI like sophisticated harmonic structures.
