{"id":25520,"date":"2017-08-22T10:47:23","date_gmt":"2017-08-22T14:47:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?p=25520"},"modified":"2017-08-22T10:47:26","modified_gmt":"2017-08-22T14:47:26","slug":"county-to-participate-in-overdose-awareness-day-aug-31","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?p=25520","title":{"rendered":"County to participate in Overdose Awareness Day, Aug. 31"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/odposter.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-4933\" src=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/odposter-212x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"212\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>As part of Chester County\u2019s commitment to tackle the opioid and heroin epidemic, the County\u2019s Department of Drug &amp; Alcohol Services announces the County\u2019s participation in \u201cInternational Overdose Awareness Day\u201d on Thursday, August 31, 2017. \u00a0On this day, the County will be joining communities around the world in encouraging residents, businesses and organizations to raise awareness of overdose, reduce the stigma surrounding overdose, remember the lives lost to overdose and acknowledge the grief felt by families and friends who have lost a loved one.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>To mark the occasion, 97 pinwheels will be displayed in front of the Chester County Justice Center on Market Street in West Chester and the Chester County Government Services Center on Westtown Road, representing the 97 lives lost to overdose in Chester County in 2016. \u00a0In addition, citizens are invited to participate in a moment of silence on August 31st at 9:30 a.m. to remember those lost to overdose and the loved ones left behind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSadly, we lost nearly 100 lives to accidental drug overdose in Chester County in 2016, and we are on track to exceed that number in 2017,\u201d said Vince Brown, Executive Director of the Chester County Department of Drug and Alcohol Services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur community, as well as our country, faces an opioid and heroin epidemic and the disease of addiction knows no bounds,\u201d he added. \u201cAddiction does not discriminate against age, race, socioeconomic status or education level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several Chester County organizations will be holding events on August 31st in honor of \u201cInternational Overdose Awareness Day\u201d. Events include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>International Overdose Awareness Day Vigil hosted by community members, at New Garden Township Hall,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/dir\/%E2%80%99%E2%80%99\/%E2%80%99%E2%80%99\/data=!4m5!4m4!1m0!1m2!1m1!1s0x89c655d558595733:0x86e2dc7bd83c620f?sa=X&amp;ved=0ahUKEwjmsNiF0-jVAhVjwFQKHWFqD2QQ9RcICzAA\">\u00a0299 Starr Road, Landenberg<\/a>\u00a0from 7:00pm-8:30pm. This service will include featured speakers and a remembrance of those lost to overdose through a memory wall display of pictures.<\/li>\n<li>Candlelight Vigil hosted by Kacie\u2019s Cause, at<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/dir\/%E2%80%99%E2%80%99\/First+Baptist+Church,+415+W.+State+Street,+kennett\/data=!4m5!4m4!1m0!1m2!1m1!1s0x89c6561faca26c2d:0x9f23803624a2a0f8?sa=X&amp;ved=0ahUKEwj2782a0-jVAhVl3IMKHdfbAtsQ9RcIcTAL\">\u00a0First Baptist Church, 415 W. State Street,<\/a>\u00a0Kennett Square from 7:00pm-8:30pm. This event will include featured speakers, a lighting of candles and \u201copen mic\u201d share for the attendees.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cBuilding Community, Sharing Hope\u201d hosted by Pennsylvania Recovery Organization-Achieving Community Together (PRO-ACT), at Charles A. Melton Center,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/501+E+Miner+St,+West+Chester,+PA+19382\/@39.9625302,-75.598861,17z\/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x89c6f1682e7626bb:0xdbcdca9d26db5054!8m2!3d39.9625302!4d-75.5966723\">501 E. Miner Street, West Chester<\/a>from 5:30pm-8:00pm. This event will include a buffet dinner, several keynote speakers, audience sharing and a moment of silence with a luminary ceremony to remember the victims of the disease of addiction.
