Science Saturdays are drop-in activities, so visitors are free to stop by at any time during the event hours.\u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">February 17 is the date for \u201cScience Saturday: Ferry Impressive!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">For this Saturday\u2019s activity, visitors will have fun with fluid dynamics and hydraulics. Visitors of all ages are invited to discover solutions to science and engineering challenges.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Every boat that floats relies on a few simple concepts that visitors will need to use for this science challenge. Visitors will learn about density and buoyancy by building a boat that will carry the largest load possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The program on February 24 will be \u201cScience Saturday: Pump It Up!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6480\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/carnivore-capades-2018-636.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6480\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6480\" src=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/carnivore-capades-2018-636-350x265.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"265\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6480\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Carnivore Capades<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">From February 17-19, the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University\u00a0(1900 Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia, 215-299-1000,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ansp.org\/\">www.ansp.org<\/a>) is presenting \u201cCarnivore Capades,\u201d a special event in conjunction with the museum\u2019s brand-new display &#8212; \u00a0\u201cCrocs: Ancient Predators in a Modern World.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">What has terrifying teeth, cunning claws, and sure-footed stealth? A carnivore &#8212; that\u2019s what.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">From a chronological point of view, this is a world belonging to crocodiles, alligators and its contemporaries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Humans have been on earth approximately 200,000 years. Crocodilians have been around for more than 200 million years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cCrocs: Ancient Predators in a Modern World,\u201d which will be on display until May 6, was created by Clyde Peeling\u2019s Reptiland in Allenwood, Pennsylvania.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cCrocs\u201d introduces visitors to one of the most exciting and primal groups of animals through the presentation of amazing live animals, realistic croc models, engaging interactive activities, and informative videos. The exhibit explores the rich and complex lives of alligators, crocodiles, caimans and gharials\u2014their evolutionary history, biology and behavior, and their precarious relationship to people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Visitors to the museum will be able to come face-to-snout with live crocodilians, a group of reptiles that has evolved and thrived for 200 million years thanks to their brute strength, keen senses, and murderous instincts. Today\u2019s crocs range from diminutive forest dwellers to monstrous creatures that eat wildebeests, buffaloes, and occasionally people. Their ancestors were the galloping land predators, jumping insect eaters, pug-nosed herbivores, and ocean-going filter-feeders that haunted our waters and our dreams.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">At the museum, visitors can check out live species (including the Siamese crocodile, the broad-snouted caiman, the American alligator, and the West African dwarf crocodile), peek into a real living alligator nest, learn to speak croc in under five minutes, test their strength against a croc\u2019s bite, check out awesome skulls, make water dance, create a 3-D animation of a long-extinct croc and learn all about croc attacks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cCarnivore Capades\u201d activities include an auditorium show \u201cCaptivating Carnivores,\u201d along with exhibits such as \u201cDeadly Dinosaurs,\u201d \u00a0\u201cCrocodiles Rock!,\u201d \u00a0\u201cCROC Talk,\u201d \u201cCarnivore Crafts,\u201d and \u201cOwl Pellet Dissection: Microscope Cart.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Tickets are $5 in addition to general admission, which is $19.95 for adults and $15.95 for children (ages 3-12).<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6481\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/hands-on-house.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6481\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6481\" src=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/hands-on-house-350x263.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"263\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6481\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Hands-on House Children\u2019s Museum<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The Hands-on House Children\u2019s Museum (721 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, 717-569-5437, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.handsonhouse.org\/\">http:\/\/www.handsonhouse.org<\/a>) is hosting a special series called \u201cSTEAM Explorers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Curiosity, creativity, and discovery will take children (accompanied by an adult) on an educational adventure in The Clubhouse, where learning and fun go hand-in-hand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Guests will be able to explore \u201cSTEAM: Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math.\u201d These programs are designed for families with children ages 3-5 years old accompanied by an adult. One adult is required for every two children attending. Free with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.handsonhouse.org\/index.php?pID=7\" target=\"_self\">regular admission<\/a> to Hands-on House.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">On February 16, there will be a special program called \u201cSeuss Steam Challenge.\u201d The event\u2019s description states &#8212; How do vegetables and shapes go together?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">It is explained in the program titled \u201cVegetable Geometry\u201d \u2013 and no cooking experience needed to find out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The event is free with regular admission to Hands-on House and no pre-registration required. Admission to the museum is $9.50 for adults and children. To make sure that every attendee has a great experience, please have one adult attending for every two children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">In other museum activity geared for youngsters, the Garden State Discovery Museum: (2040 Springdale Road, Cherry Hill, New Jersey, 856-424-1233, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.discoverymuseum.com\/\">www.discoverymuseum.com<\/a>) is presenting a special program called \u201cPassport to Discovery\u201d on selected weekends now through the end of March.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">This weekend, the focus will be on Africa. On February 17, there will be special performances by Universal African Drum and Dance at 1 and 2 p.m.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">On February 24, the program will be \u201cPassport to Discovery: Italy.\u201d It was originally scheduled for February 11 but did not want to compete with Super Bowl Sunday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cPassport to Discovery: Ireland\u201d is scheduled for March 3 and 4 followed by \u201cPassport to Discovery: Animals of the Americas\u201d on March 10 and \u201cPassport to Discovery: Polynesia\u201d on March 17.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Admission to the museum is $13.95 for adults and children (12 months and over) and $12.95 for seniors. Children visiting the museum must be accompanied by an adult 18 or older.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Linvilla Orchards\u2019 (137 West Knowlton Road, Media, 610-876-7116, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.linvilla.com\/\">www.linvilla.com<\/a>) \u201cFore! The Planet\u201d\u00a0is a highly interactive and playful museum exhibit created by the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia. This exhibition pairs important environmental issues with the fun of miniature golf.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">It features 18 unique educational holes on a variety of topics &#8212; butterfly metamorphosis, a tropical rainforest, evolution, dinosaur extinction, food chains and more. The Royal Botanical Gardens of Kew list over 20,000 accepted species with about 800 new species added each year. Additionally, horticulturists have more than 100,000 hybrids and cultivars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The celebration of the orchid species features thousands of orchid blooms along with a variety of displays and special exhibits throughout its four-acre conservatory. \u201cOrchid Extravaganza\u201d will also feature stunning displays of orchids in planting beds, containers and innovative exhibits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">As one of the first plant collections at Longwood, orchids have held a place of distinction since 1922. The site\u2019s talented horticulturists celebrate the beauty and variety of orchids with an artful display that includes a towering 12-foot-tall archway, a spectacular orchid curtain, and hundreds of vibrant Vanda orchids adorning the Silver Garden.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Approximately 5,000 colorful orchids hang from baskets, create inspiring arrangements and adorn unique forms throughout\u00a0\u201cOrchid Extravaganza.\u201d Those who visit the floral extravaganza in March will have the opportunity to see Longwood Gardens\u2019 rare sky-blue poppies in bloom in the Conservatory during Longwood\u2019s inaugural <a title=\"Winter Blues Festival\" href=\"https:\/\/longwoodgardens.org\/node\/174511\">Winter Blues Festival<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Another attraction is \u201cOrKid Days,\u201d which are scheduled for February 19 and March 17.
