\"\"<\/a>This is a great time for area Heart fans with three concerts featuring musicians who have been key members of the hitmaking band from the Pacific Northwest.<\/p>\n

On August 9, there will be a concert by a band featuring two original Heart members. On August 12, Heart\u2019s Nancy Wilson will headline her own show. Last Saturday, her sister and Heart bandmate Ann Wilson shared the bill with Jeff Beck and Paul Rodgers in Camden.<\/p>\n

Tonight, the Sellersville Theater (24 West Temple Avenue, Sellersville, 215-257-5808,\u00a0www.st94.com<\/a>) will present Heart By Heart, a group featuring original Heart members Steve Fossen and Michael Derosier.<\/p>\n

In 2013, bassist Steve Fossen and drummer Michael Derosier were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as original members of Heart. That 1970s lineup brought to the world the massive radio hits \u201cMagic Man,\u201d \u201cCrazy On You,\u201d \u201cDreamboat Annie,\u201d \u201cBarracuda,\u201d \u201cKick It Out,\u201d \u201cHeartless,\u201d \u201cStraight On,\u201d \u201cDog & Butterfly\u201d and \u201cEven It Up.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now, Fossen and Derosier are back together with Heart By Heart, a new band featuring vocalist Somar Macek.<\/p>\n

\u201cSomar and I met a few years ago,\u201d said Fossen, during a phone interview last week from his home in Seattle.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe met at a party. We needed a girl to sing Heart material. I\u2019d play bass and Somar would sing along. I got an offer to open for Dwight Yoakum back in fall 2009.<\/p>\n

\u201cI needed a band. So, we got Mike on drums and Randy Hansen on guitar. We played at a benefit for the\u00a0Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and people in the rock scene were there. Booking agents heard about us. We did a lot of shows in the Seattle area and word spread. It\u2019s all been very organic. One thing led to another.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fossen has been part of Heart\u2019s DNA since the very beginning.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was in the original band,\u201d said Fossen. \u201cRoger Fisher and I started the band when we were in high school. Nancy came up and joined us after she finished college. We kept going through members until we found Ann.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 1967, Fossen put together a band called The Army with\u00a0Roger Fisher<\/a>\u00a0on guitar, Don Wilhelm on guitar, keyboards and lead vocals, and Ray Schaefer on drums. They played for several years in the Seattle area, went through some line-up changes and renamed the band White Heart.<\/p>\n

More personnel shifts followed, and the name was shortened to just Heart. Eventually, Nancy Wilson joined, and her sister Ann Wilson came on board in 1974.<\/p>\n

\u201cI stayed with Heart until 1982,\u201d said Fossen. \u201cMike and I left the band after we made the \u2018Private Audition\u2019 album.\u201d<\/p>\n

With a mission of recreating the songs of Heart while bringing the essence and purity of the group back to the stage, Heart By Heart was created to offer fans the unique experience that only those who were actually in the original band could offer.<\/p>\n

In order to play the songs the way they were conceived, Fossen and Derosier surrounded themselves with musicians who shared their philosophy for excellence. Macek delivers all that is needed with her vocal range and stage presence. With the help of the legendary Randy Hansen on guitar and Seattle radio host Bob Rivers on keyboards, the band got off to a flying start.<\/p>\n

\u201cRandy played with us up until the early part of this year,\u201d said Fossen. \u201cHe also has his own career as a Hendrix tribute artist, so it was hard to co-ordinate schedules. Our new guitar player is Chad Quist and we have Lizzy Daymont on guitar, keyboards and vocals.\u201d<\/p>\n

Heart By Heart definitely gets to the heart of Heart with all the sonic skills and stage intensity of the original.<\/p>\n

According to Fossen, \u201cWe don\u2019t consider ourselves a \u2018tribute band\u2019 but rather the second generation of\u00a0Heart. With\u00a0Mike\u00a0and me at the helm and\u00a0Somar\u00a0on vocals, we can, once again, help bring out those musical nuances and ignite the energy within our own band that made\u00a0Heart one of the most beloved rock groups of our time. We don\u2019t see it as our task to modify or update these classic tunes that Heart fans love and have listened to all these years.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fans who watch Heart By Heart perform on stage get transported back to another era \u2013 an era when the Wilson sisters and a group of crack musicians ruled the airwaves.<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone in this band loves the music of Heart,\u201d said Fossen. \u201cWe honor the music of Heart. Our live set is all Heart songs. We try to play it as close to the original as we can. It\u2019s all for the benefit of Heart music.<\/p>\n

Mary Fahl<\/p><\/div>\n

When Mary Fahl performs in concert, there are three possible avenues she might travel. She could take the stage with her band. She could perform a solo show. Or, she could treat her fans to a live presentation of one of her special projects.<\/p>\n

On August 11, Fahl will visit the Sellersville Theater to present another special evening of entertainment. She provided an answer for which type of show she has planned with a message on her Facebook homepage \u2013 \u201cFor all my friends in Bucks County, PA – on Saturday, August 11th @8pm I\u2019ll be back at the Sellersville Theater & Washington House Hotel & Restaurant in Sellersville with my full band AND we\u2019ll be performing all of our version of “Dark Side of the Moon” during the second set.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Fahl, playing a gig in Sellersville is almost like playing a gig in her own backyard because she lives just a short drive from the venue.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor this show, I\u2019m out with my band,\u201d said Fahl, during a phone interview from her home in Upper Bucks County.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will have my whole band with me and that is unusual for one of my shows in this area. I only do about four band shows each year, so this is a pretty special event. This will be fun. I haven\u2019t brought my band down there \u2013 not even to Philly.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy band is from Syracuse. Mark Doyle, who is my music director, plays guitar and piano. He\u2019s based in Syracuse and I asked him to put a band together for me. We have a drummer, a bass player and a keyboard player. They can all rehearse easily in Syracuse and I go there when I need to rehearse with them.\u201d<\/p>\n

The show at Sellersville has a lot to offer Fahl\u2019s fans.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll be performing two sets,\u201d said Fahl. \u201cThe first set will be my regular set \u2013 my stuff, October Project songs, a typical show. The second set will be my version of \u2018Dark Side of the Moon.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Many of Fahl\u2019s fans have been with her ever since her time with October Project which lasted from 1991-1996.<\/p>\n

\u201cOctober Project had a large body of work and I still perform some of those songs in my live show,\u201d said Fahl. \u201cIf I don\u2019t do some of those songs, fans get upset. I also like doing interesting covers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fahl has written and performed songs for several major motion pictures, including the lead song (\u201cGoing Home\u201d) for the Civil War epic \u201cGods and Generals.\u201d Her music can also be found on the original soundtrack of the 2003 movie \u201cThe Guys.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2011, Fahl recorded her own version of one of rock\u2019s all-time classics \u2014 Pink Floyd\u2019s \u201cDark Side of the Moon.\u201d Fahl re-interpreted the songs on an album she titled \u201cFrom the Dark Side of the Moon.<\/p>\n

For many artists, the task of re-inventing songs from an album as iconic as \u201cDark Side of the Moon\u201d could have been too much of a challenge. Not so for Fahl who crafted a disc that honored its roots but established an identity all its own.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter making the Sony classical album (\u201cClassics for a New Century\u201d), I wanted to do something that was fun,\u201d said Fahl. \u201cAn independent filmmaker I knew wanted to use me in a performance piece. I wanted to do something that I didn\u2019t have the ability to write.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s when I decided to do the \u2018Dark Side\u2019 recording. It\u2019s like a classical piece of music. I did not intend to make a cover record. It\u2019s my version and it doesn\u2019t sound at all like Pink Floyd\u2019s version. But, a lot of die-hard Pink Floyd fans have responded well. They like the album \u2014 and my live versions of the songs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fahl is a singer, a guitarist and a songwriter. More than anything, Fahl is a performer.<\/p>\n

\u201cPerforming is my primary form of self-expression,\u201d said Fahl. \u201cWhen I do a show, I want to take you on a complete journey. I want to transform you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fahl has been delivering transformative shows for years. Once you\u2019ve heard Fahl sing, from that point on when you hear a song by Fahl, you immediately know who is singing.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been working on a new record,\u201d said Fahl. \u201cIt\u2019s a folky, ambient classical record. It has a lot of ambient guitar, cello and a little me on guitar. I’m also working on a TV project. I\u2019ve been working ferociously on that. It’s right up my alley.\u201d<\/p>\n

Prior to the release of her next album, Fahl just put out an EP titled \u201cFour Songs,\u201d a collection of Italian arias. This limited-edition, signed and personalized EP is a fundraiser to help Fahl complete the full album. Each purchase enters the buyer into a drawing to receive a free copy of the fully-produced album.<\/p>\n

Andrew Combs<\/p><\/div>\n

Andrew Combs is a talented singer\/songwriter\/guitarist from the South who released his debut album in 2012 and his third LP last year. On August 10, Combs will visit the area to headline a show at Boot and Saddle (1131 South Broad Street, Philadelphia, 215-639-4528, www.bootandsaddlephilly.com<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Combs was born in Texas and has resided in the South his entire life. He has never lived above the 36th parallel north.<\/p>\n

\u201cI grew up in Dallas and now live in Nashville,\u201d said Combs, during a phone interview Monday afternoon, the day before he resumed his tour with a show in Decatur, Georgia.<\/p>\n

\u201cI moved to Nashville 12 years ago after a brief stint in New Orleans. After Katrina hit, I took it as a sign.\u201d<\/p>\n

Combs is now touring in support of his recently-released EP \u201c5 Covers & A Song.\u201d On his new EP, Combs showcases songs that have had an impact on him at different points in his life. Songs by The Strokes and Radiohead are a nostalgic look back at teenage self-discovery, while Loudon Wainwright III\u2019s \u201c4 x 10\u201d represents a more current perspective, reflecting on his life now as a husband and father.<\/p>\n

His previous release was a full-length titled \u201cCanyons of My Mind,\u201d which came out about a year ago. His debut album \u201cWorried Man\u201d came out in 2012 and was followed by \u201cAll These Dreams\u201d in 2015.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll be playing some songs from \u2018Canyons of My Mind\u2019 on this tour,\u201d said Combs. \u201cWe\u2019ll play all six songs from the new EP and some songs from older albums like \u2018Too Stoned To Cry\u2019 from \u2018Worried Man.\u2019 And, I have a few songs from my next album that I\u2019ll be playing.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve started working on some demos to record this winter. \u2018Canyons of My Mind\u2019 just came out in 2017 so I\u2019m still playing a lot of songs from that album.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you make a record, you spend a year making it and then it comes out six months after it\u2019s done. I\u2019m way past these songs now but I\u2019m happy to still play them for my fans.\u201d<\/p>\n

The idea for the EP evolved as a setting to recognize some of his favorite songwriters, including Blake Mills, Lucinda Williams, The Strokes, Radiohead and Loudon Wainwright III. The final track on the album, \u201cExpectations,\u201d is the lone original song on the EP.<\/p>\n

According to Combs, \u201cWe all know that Blake Mills is a tremendous guitar player, but it\u2019s his knack for songwriting and arranging that keeps me coming back to his records.<\/p>\n

\u201cLucinda is the queen of songwriting in my book. No one else can portray a picture like her. She\u2019s up there with Tom Waits, Townes and Guy Clark when it comes to words. I wanted a love song on the EP — something that came from a feeling of adoration. It\u2019s a simple bed of music that her words dance on, but the build of the tune helps portray the yearning for someone. I couldn\u2019t be happier with this version. I\u2019d like to think Lucinda would enjoy it as well.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Expectations\u2019 is a tune Sarah Siskind and I came up with on a rainy afternoon here in Nashville. We got to talking about relationships. I remember repeating a quote from a friend, saying, \u201cyou only get what you expect,\u201d meaning that if you have expectations about someone close to you, positive or negative, they most likely will come true in your mind.\u201d<\/p>\n

The EP, which was officially released by New West Records on July 27, 2018, was produced by Jordan Lehning.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe recorded the EP pretty quickly back in the winter \u2013 January or February,\u201d said Combs. \u201cOriginally, Jordan and I wee going to make an EP of Loudon covers and then it became a whole different thing.<\/p>\n

\u201cI knew that I was going to spend most of this year focusing on writing for my next album. But, I didn\u2019t want to not put anything out. So, I decided to do songs that were my favorites \u2013 songs I grew up with. I was a big fan of Radiohead when I was in high school. Lucinda was a big influence. Blake and Loudon were recent discoveries.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe did everything in a week. Jordan has his own studio called The Duck and he works super-fast. We had a couple pre-production meetings. I had a little playlist \u2013 songs I thought were cool. We whittled it down from there.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow, I\u2019m touring with a five-piece band. Everybody sings and that means there are some great harmonies. The songs when performed live are pretty much the same as I recorded them.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not that unusual for professional football players to go into the world of entertainment. Most frequently, it\u2019s in the role of sports announces or analysts but some pursue other avenues such as talk show hosts.<\/p>\n

Jennie McNulty<\/p><\/div>\n

It\u2019s not that usual for professional football players to pursue a second career as a comedian but that\u2019s the path taken by Jennie McNulty.<\/p>\n

McNulty, who will headline a show on August 11 at the Rrazz Room (6426 Lower York Road, New Hope, 888-596-1027, www.TheRrazzRoom.com<\/a>), recently hung up her cleats after a career in pro football as a receiver for the California Quake in the Independent Women\u2019s Football League.<\/p>\n

McNulty\u2019s humor is smart, quick and hysterically funny. Her playfully sarcastic style and easy delivery engages every crowd. Whether calling on crazy life experiences or something the audience just said, her material fresh and her show is full of laughter and guaranteed fun.<\/p>\n

McNulty, who is a favorite in the LGBT community, can currently be seen on MTV Network\u2019s LOGO TV channel in a comedy special called, \u201cOne Night Stand Up.\u201d<\/p>\n

McNulty, who graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor\u2019s degree in psychology and a Masters degree in kinesiology, has traveled the world doing comedy. In addition to headlining in comedy clubs all over the US and Canada, she has entertained the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. She also does comedy in more peaceful settings as one of the favorites of Olivia Cruises and Resorts. She spends her summer seasons performing nightly in Provincetown, Massachusetts.<\/p>\n

\u201cI grew up in Detroit and played basketball and softball when I was in high school,\u201d said McNulty, during a recent phone interview from her home in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was working in a research lab after college. I had wanted to do theater when I was young, but I was always involved in sports. When I was working at the lab, I saw a co-worker go through mid-life crisis and that caught my attention.<\/p>\n

\u201cI watched comedians at open mics and thought I could do better. I did my first open mic night and it went great. I got laughs at all the right spots. There was a lot of work for comics around Detroit. I always wanted to do it and the time was right.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even though much of McNulty\u2019s humor is centered around LGBT topics, it also maintains a universal appeal.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t come out until 1999,\u201d said McNulty. \u201cI feared people thinking I was gay. What I said to myself \u2013 if I\u2019m 96 years old and never had relationships with women, would I regret it? Once I let myself go, I was fine.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a revelation. I looked at women in a different way. Almost immediately, it came into my comedy. All this material kept coming to me. I found a wealth of new topics \u2013 topics that touched me in so many ways.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce I figured out what it was about, it was easy. I realized it was important for me to be out on stage. It opened new material \u2013 and a new market. I draw mostly gay audiences, but I still do some straight shows. Good comedy is about truth.\u201d<\/p>\n

Within The Ruins<\/p><\/div>\n

It\u2019s been about a year since\u00a0Within The Ruins<\/a>\u00a0released its latest album \u201cHalfway Human\u201d on eOne Music\/Good Fight Music and the band is still touring to support the album.<\/p>\n

The tour will bring them back to the area on August 11 for a show at the Voltage Lounge (421 North Seventh Street, Philadelphia, 215- 964-9602,www.voltagelounge.com<\/a>).<\/p>\n

There have been some new things happening with the band recently.<\/p>\n

Tim Goergen has been\u00a0Within The Ruins\u2019 vocalist since 2009, but unfortunately that nearly 10-year run has come to an end. Guitarist\u00a0Joe Cocchi says the split is\u00a0due to some recent and ongoing health issues, and Goergen confirms that the split is indeed amicable. Goergen adds that he is not done making music and thanks the band for his time with them.<\/p>\n

According to a release from Goergen, \u201cIt is with an extremely heavy heart that I announce my departure from Within The Ruins. I want to be very clear that this split is mutual, and I have nothing but love for my brothers and vice-versa. I am at a point in my life that won’t allow me to tour anymore, and touring is a huge part of this band. It breaks my heart, but it is what it is.\u201d<\/p>\n

Within the Ruins has replaced Goergen with a new vocalist \u2013 Steve Tinnon.<\/p>\n

On July 27, the band announced a surprise digital 45 titled\u00a0\u201cWorld Undone\u201d\u00a0that contains two new previously-unreleased singles featuring Tinnon. The two tracks on the single are — \u201cWorld Undone\u201d and \u201cResurgence.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve been on the road a lot,\u201d said Cocchi, during a phone interview. \u201cWe started putting songs together for \u2018Halfway Human\u2019 a while ago. We had been writing for two years and then started recording in April 2016.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe recorded the album in my studio in western Massachusetts and finished it in July. We did it all ourselves. I handled the production and engineering.\u201d<\/p>\n

Within The Ruins released its debut album \u201cCreature\u201d in 2009 and followed with \u201cInvade\u201d (2010), \u201cElite\u201d (2013) and \u201cPhenomena\u201d (2014). \u201cHalfway Human,\u201d the band\u2019s first album not featuring a one-word title, was just released on March 3.<\/p>\n

Having developed a skillful self-reliance in the studio, the band has forged a progressive metal sound that expertly mines the most fertile grounds of their genre while shaking off the genre\u2019s self-imposed limitations.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe drummer and I started the band over 10 years ago,\u201d said Cocchi. \u201cThe writing back then was done by the two of us together. Over the years, it changed. We started to write together less and less.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow, I just set aside 20-30 hours a week and write. That\u2019s how we\u2019ve been doing it for years. I write all of it on guitar but some songs do start on the drums. Generally, I just sit at my computer with my guitar and write.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe recorded 11 songs for the album and one extra song. I had five more songs that were potential for the album but didn\u2019t quite get the attention they needed. I also had another six songs that sounded too much like the songs from \u2018Phenomena.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the big things was to keep it a little more real-sounding and not over-produced. We didn\u2019t want to have everything perfect. Our goal is always to write better and make everything more comprehendible. There are a lot more spaces in the new songs.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was less focus on technicality and more focus on writing songs with verses \u2013 more focus on writing good songs. I think this was our most well-executed album. We all worked really hard on it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The theater\u2019s current production is running now through August 26. Performances are Friday and Saturday evenings (doors 6 p.m.\/show, 8 p.m.) and Sunday afternoons (doors, 1 p.m.\/show, 3 p.m.). Tickets, which include dinner and show, are $63 for adults and $33 for children (ages 4-12).<\/p>\n

Now through August 19, Cirque du Soleil is performing its new show \u201cVolta\u201d under the Grand Chapiteau (Big Top) which has been erected on the grounds adjacent to the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks. \u201cVolta,\u201d the show in Oaks Center (100 Station Avenue, Oaks,\u00a0www.cirquedusoleil.com<\/a>) will be Cirque du Soleil\u2019s\u00a0first Big Top production in five years.<\/p>\n
