Jason Ricci and JJ Appleton<\/p><\/div>\n

What do you get when you pair a talented singer\/songwriter\/guitarist from New York City and a kickass harmonica player and singer from the South?<\/p>\n

You get an act billed as Jason Ricci and JJ Appleton.<\/p>\n

The two veteran musicians will bring their no-holds-barred sound to the Sellersville Theater (24 West Temple Avenue, Sellersville, 215-257-5808<\/a>,\u00a0www.st94.com<\/a>) on October 11.<\/p>\n

Ricci and Appleton have teamed up to record a new album entitled \u201cBeautiful Slop,\u201d which will be released on October 26.<\/p>\n

The joining of forces between award-winning blues harp master Ricci and the multi-faceted Appleton produced one of the most unexpected and exciting blues music releases of the last few years.<\/p>\n

With original songs that nod to Delta blues and roots history, the album offers raw, powerful emotions and world class musicianship in an acoustic format. Ricci\u2019s fiery harp performances blend perfectly with Appleton\u2019s deep, wry, truthful songs and fierce resonator guitar skills.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had never ever met or seen Jason play live,\u201d said Appleton, during a phone interview last week from a tour stop in Milford, New Hampshire.<\/p>\n

\u201cI saw some of his songs on YouTube and asked friends \u2013 have you ever heard anyone play like that? I wanted to make a Delta roots record. Jason didn\u2019t have one \u2013 so, I called him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ricci said, \u201cI looked him up and couldn\u2019t believe how good a singer he was. I\u2019ve always been involved in blues. My band releases deal so much in electricity \u2013 a wild sound. So, a project like this was a good way to get back to my roots.\u201d<\/p>\n

A few songwriting sessions, a live-to-video project and a ProTools recording in New York City with Tedeschi Trucks bassist Tim Lefebvre was the foundation for their album, \u201cDirty Memory,\u201d which was released in 2014.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had a friend who is a film director,\u201d said Appleton. \u201cHe did me a huge favor when he gave me his studio for a day. We did as three-camera show and filmed it and recorded it on our own,\u201d<\/p>\n

Ricci said, \u201cWe had one rehearsal to get ready for that record \u2013 one hour on the day before we went into the studio.\u201d<\/p>\n

Six of the tracks from \u201cDirty Memory\u201d dominated the Top 10 Acoustic Blues Singles chart in the autumn of 2015. In November 2015, \u201cDirty Memory\u201d was given the 2015 Jimi Award for \u201cBest New Artist Debut\u201d by Blues 411<\/p>\n

For the new album, Appleton and Ricci took over bassist\/producer Derek Nievergelt\u2019s Brooklyn basement studio for two days \u2013 in 90-degree heat with no air conditioning \u2013 and recorded 10 songs dripping with raw grit, groove, acoustic soul and sweat.<\/p>\n

Ricci, a harmonica legend and winner of the 2018 Blues Award for Best Instrumentalist\/Harmonica, broke another barrier by melding his Sonny Terry on speed style with Appleton\u2019s beautifully melodic flowing riffs. The result was the \u201cBeautiful Slop\u201d album.<\/p>\n

\u201cHalf of the album was recorded in the studio in New York,\u201d said Appleton. \u201cWe did seven tracks and kept five for the record. The second part of the record was done in Bloomington, Indiana at Midwest Audio Recording.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ricci said, \u201cOur influences are blues artists like Little Walter and James cotton, along with soul music. Some of our songs are straight-ahead blues songs and others are more soul-based. We\u2019re asking a little more from the blues listeners. We didn\u2019t want it to be just a blues album.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we went in to make the new album, we had the experience of playing together live a lot. That informed us of what works. We recorded it in July and August and it\u2019s coming out this month. It was all recorded live \u2013 recorded live to tape. There are no overdubs and most of it is first takes. We kept it as real as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Paul McDonald<\/p><\/div>\n

Paul McDonald has been a major part of several albums over the last 10 years \u2013 but always sharing the credits.<\/p>\n

He was part of Hightide Blues on their debut EP in 2007 and their \u201cLove Come Easy\u201d album in 2008. He was also part of The Grand Magnolias on their eponymous debut LP in 2011. And, he was part of Paul McDonald and Nikki Reed which released its \u201cBest Part\u201d EP in 2012 and a single in 2014.<\/p>\n

Now, McDonald is touring in support of his debut solo LP, Modern Hearts,\u201d which came iut this year. The tour brings him to the area for a show on October 12 at MilkBoy Philadelphia (1100 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, 215- 925-6455<\/a>, www.milkboyphilly.com<\/a>).<\/p>\n

McDonald\u2019s life and career has had peaks and valleys in recent years. He sums it up well in a line from the album track \u201cSo Much Better\u201d \u2013 \u201cI\u2019m turning all these lows into glitter, silver and gold\/And, it\u2019s so much better.\u201d<\/p>\n

A native of Auburn, Alabama, McDonald has lived in Nashville and Los Angeles for more than a decade.<\/p>\n

\u201cI went to college at Auburn University and then moved to Nashville after I graduated \u2013 with a degree in biomedical sciences,\u201d said McDonald, during a phone interview last week from a tour stop in Cleveland, Ohio.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn 2010, I moved to L.A. and lived there for a few years. I moved back to Tennessee in 2014 and have been living in East Nashville ever since.\u201d<\/p>\n

McDonald\u2019s career has taken him from a start as a young guitarist to national exposure as a contestant on \u201cAmerican Idol\u201d and now to life as a singer\/songwriter in Music City.<\/p>\n

\u201cI got a guitar when I was 15,\u201d said McDonald. \u201cI learned through a church music group where a buddy taught me chords.<\/p>\n

\u201cI started writing songs immediately to express my emotions. It was more of a hobby at first \u2013 but folks were into it.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had a college rock band at Auburn \u2013 Hightide Blues. We were playing 200-250 shows a year. We toured around the Southeast and started making records.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat band changed into Grand Magnolias. We moved to Nashville and cut a record. We did as handful of shows and then I moved to L.A. That album never had a chance to break. When I moved to California, I got thrown into that L.A. stuff \u2013 zero-to-100 real quick.\u201d<\/p>\n

All that \u201cL.A. stuff\u201d included a stint on the \u201cAmerican Idol\u201d television show.<\/p>\n

In 2011, McDonald made it into the Top 24[5]<\/a> by singing an original song, “American Dreams.” He was one of ten candidates chosen as a finalist based on public voting. McDonald was eliminated from the show on April 14, 2011, with a finish of eighth place.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith the \u2018Idol\u2019 stuff, I was going all around the country playing arenas and singing only covers. It was like a Vegas show touring in front of 15,000 fans every night.\u201d<\/p>\n

After relocating to Nashville, McDonald went to North Carolina to make his debut album.<\/p>\n

\u201cModern Hearts\u201d was produced by Jordan Lehning and featured an all-star cast of studio musicians. The album was tracked at Echo Mountain Studios in Asheville, North Carolina. Additional recording took place at Sound Emporium Studios in Nashville.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou get shot out of a cannon in L.A.,\u201d said McDonald. \u201cI learned a lot about art I wanted to make \u2013 and who I didn\u2019t want to be. I\u2019d rather stay out of tabloids. I\u2019d rather have the respect of the music community<\/p>\n

Saint Slumber<\/p><\/div>\n

Saint Slumber will be performing in Philadelphia on October 12, but the show has nothing to do with religion \u2013 nothing to do with Saint Joseph, the patron saint of sleep.<\/p>\n

Saint Slumber — lead singer Josh Perna, guitarist Aaron Brown, bassist Adam Jessamine and drummer Matt Carpenter –is band from the area of northwest New Jersey near the Delaware Water Gap National Park.<\/p>\n

On October 12, the quartet will share the bill with Young Rising Sons in an all-ages show at the Voltage Lounge (421 North Seventh Street, Philadelphia, 215- 964-9602<\/a>, www.voltagelounge.com<\/a>).<\/p>\n

\u201cSaint Slumber is a space more than a person,\u201d said Perna, during a phone interview Wednesday afternoon from a tour stop in Brooklyn.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe wanted to create a conceptual save to make our music. Our tagline is \u2013 \u2018Welcome to Saint Slumber.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cAaron and I have been friends for over a decade. We met at a parochial Christian school in rural New Jersey \u2013 the Good Shepherd Christian Academy. Then, we went to high school together at North Warren Regional High in Blairstown.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we met at 13, we were the only musicians we knew. We tried playing in different kinds of bands and ended up being Saint Slumber. We put out our first record in the middle of 2017. Before that, there was a lot of experimenting<\/p>\n

That record was an EP called \u201cYouth\/\/1.\u201d The five-song EP juxtaposes the sounds of dreamy, electronic pop alongside alternative rock.<\/p>\n

Self-producing all of their own records, music videos, etc., the four musicians released their follow up EP \u2013 \u201cYouth\/\/2\u201d — on September 14.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe plan on putting out three EPs in a trilogy,\u201d said Perna. \u201cWe\u2019re developing as we go. Writing and recording constantly in our home studio. \u201cThere has been an evolution from \u2018Youth\/\/1\u2019 to \u2018Youth\/\/2.\u2019 We wanted to create something that was more dynamic \u2013 more sensitive. Loud things don\u2019t sound loud unless you\u2019re juxtapositioning with something soft. We\u2019re learning how to use opposites.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe biggest difference between the two EPs is the peaks and valleys. With \u2018Youth\/\/1,\u2019 it just hits you in the face with five songs. \u2018Youth\/\/2\u2019 will start in one place and take you on a journey.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Youth\/\/3\u2019 is hopefully going to be the best \u2013 the culmination of a story dealing with the beginning, middle and end of adolescence. \u2018Youth\/\/3\u2019 will be the period at the end of the sentence.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Weight Band<\/p><\/div>\n

If you\u2019re not familiar with this history of Bob Dylan and the music scene in Woodstock, New York, this might sound a bit confusing.<\/p>\n

The Weight Band is a band. \u201cThe Weight\u201d is a song by The Band. The Weight Band is a band named after The Band\u2019s song \u201cThe Weight.\u201d The Weight Band is a band put together to keep alive the music of The Band.<\/p>\n

On October 12, The Weight Band \u2013 Jim Weider (guitar, mandolin & vocals), Michael Bram (drums & vocals), Brian Mitchell (keyboards & vocals), Matt Zeiner (keyboard & vocals), Albert Rogers (bass, vocals) — will visit the area for a show at the World Caf\u00e9 Live (3025 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, 215-222-1400<\/a>, www.worldcafelive.com<\/a>). The group is touring in support of its debut album, \u201cWorld Gone Mad,\u201d which was released back in February.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe album came out on February 23 in the states and September 14 in Europe \u2013 and I\u2019m working on Japan\u201d said Weider, during a phone interview Wednesday afternoon from his home in Woodstock, New York. \u201cIt\u2019s doing well on the radio in Europe.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Band was a Canadian-American rock group featuring Rick Danko, Levon Helm, Garth Hudson, Richard Manuel and Robbie Robertson. In 1965, Dylan hired them as his touring band when expanded for a solo folk artist to a folk-rock musician with a group behind him.<\/p>\n

After a while, Robertson left to pursue a solo career and then later Manuel died. The remaining three members continued to tour and record albums with a succession of musicians filling the departed members\u2019 roles. The final line-up included Richard Bell, Randy Ciarlante and Jim Weider.<\/p>\n

Danko died of heart failure in 1999, after which the group broke up for good. Helm was diagnosed with throat cancer in 1998 and continued to perform until cancer won the battle in 2012.<\/p>\n

A passing wish of Helm was for the music and spirit of The Band to live on. The Weight Band was formed to do just that. The Weight Band came into existence to bring a live performance of The Band\u2019s music to fans — but not as a tribute band.<\/p>\n

All of the members of The Weight Band were either actual members in The Band or are directly and deeply connected to the legacy of The Band.\u00a0The Band just might have been one of the tightest musical groups ever and replicating the music of The Band is no easy task.<\/p>\n

\u201cA few years ago, after we lost Levon, Randy and I put The Weight Band together with a couple other musicians,\u201d said Weider. \u201cWe did songs of The Band and the shows sold out.\u201d<\/p>\n

The members all have other projects, but it is the music of The Band that binds them together.<\/p>\n

\u201cI started playing with Levon in the early \u201980s in the Levon Helm Band,\u201d said Weider. \u201cRandy was in the band too. In 1985, when Richard and Garth moved to Woodstock, we toured with Crosby, Stills and Nash. We went out as The Band. That really changed my life.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith the Weight Band, we do everybody\u2019s favorites such as \u2018Up on Cripple Creek,\u2019 \u2018The Rumor\u2019 and \u2018Look Out Cleveland.\u2019 We do stuff from the early records and tunes I never did with The Band. We try to change up the set list all the time to keep it fresh.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re getting a real mixture in our audiences. Of course, there are a lot of older folks who want to hear the songs they know. But, we\u2019re also getting kids who have started listening to The Band\u2019s music. This music is such a strong part of American music.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the start, it was mainly fans of The Band. I had noticed in the shows with Levon near the end of his life, we\u2019d do The Band\u2019s tunes and people were going wild. The reaction was overwhelming.\u201d<\/p>\n

Weider built a reputation as a versatile and talented guitarist through performances and recordings with such diverse acts as Scotty Moore, Keith Richards, Los Lobos, Graham Parker, Taj Mahal, Mavis Staples, Hot Tuna, Bob Weir\/Rat Dog, Johnny Paycheck, James Talley, Kim Wilson and Paul Butterfield.<\/p>\n

The Weight Band has been together almost six years and its current line-up has been together for two-and-a-half years. This year, the group finally recorded its debut album.<\/p>\n

\u201cWorld Gone Mad\u201d has 11 tracks and features eight original songs, including contributions from the late Levon Helm on never-before-released songs written for The Band. The album also includes a Dylan song \u2013 \u201cDay of the Locusts\u201d \u2013 and a special guest appearance by Jackie Greene on the grateful Dead song \u201cDeal.\u201d<\/p>\n

Recorded at Clubhouse Studio in Rhinebeck, New York, the album salutes a rich musical style best de-scribed as the \u201cWoodstock sound.\u201d A live, raw and rustic American musical tradition is heard throughout the self-produced album, with lyrics reflecting stories of love, humor, and personal journeys.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a challenge to make original music for our album that we could integrate with the music of The Band,\u201d said Weider. \u201cThe most obvious thing was to write original material that sounded like The Band.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was very difficult to get the sound. It was up to the lyric writing and the stories. Everyone in our group has a good handle on the Band\u2019s music. They have a good feel for the music. I think we\u2019ve completed the task and gotten the songs to blend in.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn our live shows now, we\u2019re doing pretty much the whole album. We mix originals in with the older tunes. I didn\u2019t put the new songs into the set until after the album came out because if you play them live, they\u2019re immediately up on YouTube. That can take the air out of a record release.\u201d<\/p>\n
