{"id":30677,"date":"2019-01-10T09:24:11","date_gmt":"2019-01-10T14:24:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?p=30677"},"modified":"2019-01-10T09:25:55","modified_gmt":"2019-01-10T14:25:55","slug":"on-stage-philly-still-loves-bowie","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?p=30677","title":{"rendered":"On Stage: Philly still loves Bowie"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span lang=\"EL\"><strong>By Denny Dyroff<\/strong>,\u00a0<\/span><em><span lang=\"EL\">Entertainment Editor, The Times<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/cropped-our_story_header_fb.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-8839\" src=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/cropped-our_story_header_fb-350x231.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"231\" \/><\/a>David Bowie may be gone but he is far from forgotten \u2013 especially with events such as the \u201cPhilly Loves Bowie Week.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">\u201cPhilly Loves Bowie Week\u201d is an annual volunteer production of a family of fans of the Starman \u2013 music lovers who felt it was important to gather together as a city to celebrate the life and work of a truly one-of-a-kind performer.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">On January 11, the grand finale of \u201c#PhillyLovesBowie 2019\u201d will be a concert billed as \u201cA Night of Stardust.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">The show, which will be held at Union Transfer (1026 Spring Garden Street, Philadelphia, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.utphilly.com\/\">www.utphilly.com<\/a>), is a fitting end to Philly\u2019s annual tribute week to the late rock icon<\/span>.<span lang=\"EL\"> It is also fitting that one of the featured performers is Phoebe Legere.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/anos2019.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8840 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/anos2019-350x196.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"196\" \/><\/a>The event has sold out three years in a row &#8212; Wilmington in 2016, World Cafe Live in Philly in 2017, and at Union Transfer in 2018 &#8212; and is returning to the stage with an all-star lineup.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">Dan Kauffman (Glim Dropper) returns as the music director\/drummer along with Keith Giosa on keys, Vahe Sarkissian on guitar, Joe Grillo on sax, Richard Ratner on bass, and Mark Teague on guitar.<\/span> L<span lang=\"EL\">ance Davis (Grady Hoss and the Sidewinders) returns as the vocal director and has enlisted Jeffrey Gaines, Ari Rubin, Michael Baker, Ava Cherry and Richard Bush to sing Bowie\u2019s songs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">The most direct link to Bowie is Phoebe Legere, who will be doing vocals and playing her cherry red Gibson guitar. Legere was Bowie\u2019s hand-picked opening act for the entire \u201cSound+Vision Tour.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8841\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/legere.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8841\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8841\" src=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/legere-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8841\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Phoebe Legere<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">\u201cI went to a rehearsal for this show last Sunday,\u201d said Legere, during a phone interview Tuesday afternoon from a branch of the New York Public Library. \u201cThere is so much talent on this bill. The songs are strong, and the lyrics are brilliant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">\u201cThey have assembled a cracker-jack group of killer musicians \u2013 young men who are fabulous players. They get it right \u2013 the first time. I was happy to be invited to be a part of this.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">Legere got to stand on stage and hear Bowie perform many of his greatest hits during the \u201cSound+Vision Tour,\u201d which featured set lists of songs specially requested by his fans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">\u201cI opened for David Bowie on his national tour in 1990,\u201d said Legere. \u201cWe remained friends ever since and encountered each other in New York a number of times in the years after the tour.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>According to Legere, \u201c<span lang=\"EL\">We toured all over the country together. I watched him night after night from the wings. Every performance was different.<\/span> <span lang=\"EL\">It was an education.\u00a0After the shows we\u2019d hang out for hours talking Tibetan Buddhism, Marc Bolan, Nina Simone, politics, the androgyny that is the heart of courageous <\/span>and\u00a0<span lang=\"EL\">exuberant creativity, you name it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span lang=\"EL\">David was down-to-earth and yet unearthly beautiful. He was intelligent, thoughtful and kind. The last time I saw David Bowie it was a few months before his death. He was on his bicycle. I was walking on Second Avenue. David pulled over and hugged me for a long time. We talked for about 20 minutes. It was a very private conversation.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">\u201cA Night of Stardust\u201d will feature more than 25 of Bowie\u2019s greatest songs and will cover Bowie\u2019s catalog from \u201cSpace Oddity\u201d to his final studio album before he died \u2013 \u201cLazarus.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">\u201cI\u2019m playing guitar on \u2018Ziggy Stardust\u2019 and \u2018Heroes,\u2019\u201d said Legere. \u201cOn the Nina Simone song \u2018Wild Is the Wind,\u201d I\u2019m playing accordion and piano. And, I\u2019m singing Freddie Mercury\u2019s part on \u2018Under Pressure,\u2019 the song he and Bowie did together.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">Legere, a talented singer, songwriter, instrumentalist who has released close to 20 albums, plays seven instruments including one she invented to help physically challenged children play music &#8212; the Sneakers of Samothrace. She is a Juilliard-trained composer and an internationally recognized visual artist. She offers small collectible paintings after each performance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">Her most recent album \u201cHeart of Love\u201d is a hymn to life on the American Highway \u2013 and a Top 20 Americana album.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">\u201cThe musical genre is folk\/Americana,\u201d said Legere. \u201cI play guitar, Native American flute, piano and accordion. It was released in 2017 and immediately went Top 20 on the roots charts. It\u2019s all originals \u2013 except for my cover of \u2018Jambalaya.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">Legere\u2019s music is a blend of Americana, Cajun, New Orleans jazz, country, folk and blues. She is an award-winning accordion player, virtuoso piano player, a rural folk blues guitar stylist, and an award-winning songwriter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">A standard-bearer of the Acadian-Cajun renaissance, Legere is descended from one of the original Acadian families in North America.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">Her album \u201cAcadian Moon,\u201d which was released in 2015, received strong radio play in Canada. \u201cHeart of Love\u201d is faring even better \u2013 on both sides of the Canadian-American border.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">\u201cA DJ friend of mine gave me a list of every Americana station in America \u2013 and a list of college stations,\u201d said Legere, who has performed at prestigious venues around the world including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and at the Congr\u00e9s Mondial Acadien.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">\u201cI sent out 400 envelopes with the CD along with self-made heart-shaped chocolate lollipops. That resulted in me reaching the Top 20.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">In reality, the deejays were suckers for the music \u2013 after being lured in by the lollipops.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">Legere, whose debut album \u201cTrust Me\u201d was released by Epic Records in 1986, has a long and diverse artistic resume.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">She has appeared on National Public Radio, CBS Sunday Morning, ABC, NBC, PBS and Charlie Rose. She also received the prestigious Acker Award for Excellence in the Arts in 2014.<\/span> I<span lang=\"EL\">n 2015, she appeared in HBO\u2019s documentary \u201cIt\u2019s Me Hilary.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">While still in her teens, Legere was signed Epic Records as a songwriter. <\/span>She <span lang=\"EL\">led a number of influential New York bands, including Monad, 4 Nurses of the Apocalypse and her nine-piece swing-punk outfit Swingalicious.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">After the radio success of her 1989 album \u201cMarilyn Monroe\u201d (Island Records), and her appearance in numerous underground films, Legere shifted her focus to avant-garde classical music and was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for her work with the Cleveland Chamber Symphony.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">Legere, who has had six of her original plays with music produced in New York City, did not enter the world of entertainment unprepared.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">She graduated from Vassar College, studied composition at the Juilliard School. She also studied piano at the New England Conservatory, and film scoring, orchestration and jazz arranging at the NYU Graduate School of Music Composition.<\/span> Additionally, L<span lang=\"EL\">egere studied composition with John Lewis of the Modern Jazz Quartet, Morton Subotnick, Wayne Oquin and Dinu Gezzo. She also studied jazz arranging with Ira Newborn and Rick Shemaria.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">According to Legere, the death of the record business is a much-needed correction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">\u201cLife in the music business is never easy,\u201d said Legere, who has been embraced by the Outlaw Americana community and music lovers around the world. \u201cIt\u2019s so competitive. At one point, record companies felt artists didn\u2019t have to be musicians. Female artists got signed because they were pretty. They didn\u2019t need good musicians. They could just use machines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">\u201cThey didn\u2019t have to deal with intelligent people. Intelligent people are like lightning rods. They\u2019re really doctors. They\u2019ve been doctors for thousands of years. I was signed by Epic Records when I was 16 so I really know about the abuse and sexual harassment \u2013 and unethical practices. Now, big record companies are falling apart.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">According to Legere, \u201cRight now musicians have a golden opportunity. For the first time, we can shape our own careers. Musicians are no longer the slaves of music corporations.<\/span> <span lang=\"EL\">We are free to invent the music we hear in our hearts today and invent new ways to deliver it to the listeners of tomorrow.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">Legere was too talented \u2013 and too smart \u2013 to be sucked into the world of being just another pop princess.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">\u201cI got involved in very avant-garde music more than 15 years ago,\u201d said Legere, a versatile artist who created a 15-person, rideable giant Eagle sculpture that runs on alternative energy (learn more about The Shamancycle at <a href=\"http:\/\/shamancyle.com\/\">Shamancyle.com<\/a>). \u201cI did an epic poem with the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra \u2013 singing the poem and improvising the music.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">In another of her many projects, Legere is the executive director of her own nonprofit organization &#8212; The Foundation for New American Art.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">The Foundation for New American Art is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation that fosters art and music education programs geared to underserved communities.<\/span>T<span lang=\"EL\">he goal is to educate, nurture and strengthen the artistic and musical spirit of the children of low-income communities, as well as provide support for after-school programs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Legere <span lang=\"EL\">visits schools, military bases, libraries with encouraging workshops &#8212; most notably her \u201cSongwriting from The Heart.\u201d Proceeds from Legere\u2019s lectures and public performances will go to The Foundation for New American Art.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">\u201cI am dedicated to nurturing the visionary artists of the future,\u201d said Legere. \u201cArt and Music are not extra-curricular. Art and Music are integral to the harmonious development of the human heart and soul.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">Legere practices what she preaches.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">\u201cRight now, I\u2019m working with a program here in New York \u2013 the Lower East Side Children\u2019s Chorus,\u201d said Legere. \u201cIt\u2019s close to where I live in the neighborhood around Avenue D.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">\u201cMusic can be so powerful. To stand there and stomp on a distortion pedal \u2013 there is no thrill on planet earth that is like that. We\u2019re trying to tell a linear story.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">\u201cI try to keep a set list from all our shows so that I can look at what we played the last time we were in each of the places we\u2019re playing again this time. That way, we don\u2019t tell the same stories.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">\u201cWhen we play this week at the World Caf\u00e9 Live, it will be a full-on rock show. But there will also be some acoustic numbers \u2013 and we will tell some stories. We\u2019ll play a lot of \u2018Villains\u2019 songs, some from \u2018Underneath\u2019 and a handful of new ones.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">In 2017, The Verve Pipe released its latest studio album, \u201cParachute,\u201d along with the band\u2019s first-ever live album, \u201cVillains \u2013 Live &amp; Acoustic (recorded at The Ark in Ann Arbor, MI).\u201d With a new lineup and a renewed energy and focus, lead singer\/principal songwriter\/co-founder Brian Vander Ark and the band, play original music that is distinguished by innovative arrangements, soul-searching lyrics and layered vocals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">\u201cWe recorded \u2018Parachute\u2019 in 2016,\u201d said Vander Ark. \u201cA lot of these songs were written by individuals in the band as a shell and then brought to the rest of the band to fill out. This is the best we\u2019ve ever done. I\u2019m surrounded by talented people. We cut the album at our bass player Joel Ferguson\u2019s studio. We played live in a room to do the demos. We\u2019d work on songs and then record together in the studio.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">\u201cWe started with one song 18 months ago and about every three or four weeks, we\u2019d put up another song on social media. After a while, we collected the songs and put the \u2018Parachute\u2019 album out. Staying in people\u2019s faces is the way the industry is right now \u2013 keeping everything fresh.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">In addition to recording rock albums, The Verve Pipe expanded its repertoire in 2009 to include writing and recording \u201cA Family Album,\u201d a critically-acclaimed introduction to the world of children\u2019s music, as well as the band\u2019s 2013 follow-up family-oriented release, \u201cAre We There Yet?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">\u201cEight or nine years ago, we put out a kids\u2019 record and it was huge,\u201d said Vander Ark. \u201cWe do kids\u2019 shows and the merch sales from these shows keeps us afloat financially. It\u2019s nice to know we have that revenue source. Now, we\u2019re back in rock and roll and put out two records.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">The Verve Pipe has been making top-flight rock and roll records since its formation in Michigan in 1992. And, there is no end in sight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">\u201cWe\u2019re working on our next album,\u201d said Vander Ark. \u201cWe try to go into the studio for a two- or three-day block of time and get a song done. That\u2019s what we\u2019ll be doing over the course of the next year. We\u2019ll be putting some singles out along the way.<\/span><\/p>\n<div><span lang=\"EL\">\u201cWe still place a lot of importance on the album. The primary fundraising efforts are an annual series of concerts.\u00a0 Since its inception in 2000, Light of Day has raised over $4.5 million in the fight to find a cure for Parkinson\u2019s disease. What began as a single concert in New Jersey has grown into approximately <\/span>70<span lang=\"EL\"> shows in<\/span> 13 <span lang=\"EL\">countries on <\/span>three<span lang=\"EL\"> continents<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">The concerts and the organization began as a birthday party in November 1998 at the Downtown Cafe in Red Bank, N<\/span>ew <span lang=\"EL\">J<\/span>ersey<span lang=\"EL\"> to celebrate the 40th birthday of artist manager and music industry veteran Bob Benjamin. Benjamin had recently been diagnosed with Parkinson\u2019s disease, a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system, and in lieu of gifts, asked that donations be made to the Parkinson\u2019s Disease Foundation.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8844\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Joe-DUrso-001.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8844\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8844\" src=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Joe-DUrso-001-350x197.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"197\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8844\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Joe D\u2019Urso<\/p><\/div>\n<p>More than <span lang=\"EL\">$2,000 was raised that night. Spurred by the generosity and support, Benjamin reached out to friends, including concert promoter Tony Pallagrosi and musician Joe D\u2019Urso, and formed the Light of Day charity, taking its name from a Bruce Springsteen song.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">The first official Light of Day concert was held at Asbury Park\u2019s legendary Stone Pony in November 2000 and primarily featured local, unsigned artists. The critically acclaimed Pittsburgh-based band Joe Grushecky and the Houserockers (managed by Benjamin) headlined the show, which featured a surprise appearance by local hero Bruce Springsteen, who joined the Houserockers for a raucous hour-long set.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">Over the years Light of Day has grown from a one-day event into a festival spanning 10 days. Performers at Light of Day have included Bruce Springsteen, Michael J. Fox, John Rzeznik, Ed Kowalczyk, Darlene Love, Southside Johnny, Jesse Malin, Alejandro Escovedo, Willie Nile, Garland Jeffreys, Jakob Dylan, Lucinda Williams, Badly Drawn Boy, Pete Yorn, Gary US Bonds, Joe D\u2019Urso and Stone Caravan, and John Eddie.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">\u201cI\u2019m very involved with Light of Day,\u201d said D\u2019Urso. \u201cI\u2019m a vice president on the board and the treasurer. This is our fourth tine ofr Light of Day in Philly.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">Joe D\u2019Urso &amp; Stone Caravan is an Americana\/Jersey Shore rock-and-roll band that has been around for a long time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">\u201cWe put out our first album release in 1991,\u201d said D\u2019Urso. \u201cI\u2019m the only original member left. The current line-up has been together about 20 years.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">That line-up features drummer Sam LaMonica, bassist Jerry Scaringe, guitarist Greg Lykins and D\u2019Urso.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a><span lang=\"EL\">Joe D\u2019Urso &amp; Stone Caravan <\/span><\/a><span lang=\"EL\">released their 14th album \u201cJersey Diner\u201d earlier this year. The 14-song album features 11 songs written by D\u2019Urso and three covers of songs by Tom Waits, Bruce Springsteen and Sandy\/Harry Chapin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">\u201cWe play 70-80 shows a year,\u201d said D\u2019Urso. \u201cI tend to do tours rather than just gigs. We do two European tours a year and that\u2019s about 40 shows. We have to work around other band members\u2019 schedules because Jerry has a rockabilly band called the Slippery Chickens and Greg is in a band called The Liberals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">\u201cOur music is a mixture of Jersey Shore and Americana. Influences are Americana rockers like Tom Petty, John Mellencamp and Bob Seger and acts from our backyard such as Bruce (Springsteen), Southside (Johnny) and Little Steven (Van Zandt) \u2013 all good songwriters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">\u201cJoe D\u2019Urso &amp; Stone Caravan never started as a bar band. We never were a cover band. I\u2019ve always been a songwriter. I\u2019m a lyricist. I learned to play guitar and then started a band.
