Keswick Avenue, Glenside, 215-572-7650,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.keswicktheatre.com\/\">www.keswicktheatre.com<\/a>) on April 23 to attend Tesla\u2019s \u201cShock USA Tour,\u201d I they get there early, they\u2019ll see The Cringe and have smiles on their faces.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The Cringe is a New York-based rock quartet. In addition to group founder &#8212; singer and songwriter John Cusimano \u2013 the band features three top-flight musicians with impressive credentials &#8212; lead guitarist James Rotondi (ex-Air, Mr. Bungle), bassist Jonny Blaze (ex-Crash Moderns) and drummer Shawn Pelton (Saturday Night Live Band, Bruce Springsteen).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The band has released six studio albums including \u201cScratch The Surface,\u201d \u201cTipping Point\u201d and \u201cPlay Thing.\u201d On April 19, The Cringe released its latest album \u2013 \u201cEverywhere You\u2019ve Never Been.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cOur first album came out in 2004 but I\u2019ve had the name as a project ever since I was in high school,\u201d said Cusimano during a phone interview last week from his home in Lake George, New York<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cIt was original, quirky punk rock. Eventually, I wrote enough songs that I could start gigging. I had different people that I played with.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWhen I was in the studio for the first album, the engineer recommended Shawn Pelton and then Shawn introduced me to Roto (Rotondi). Then, Blaze joined the group. The four of us have been together since 2008.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cEverywhere You\u2019ve Never Been\u201d is the band\u2019s first album in several years and it rocks hard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Cusimano, who is also a lawyer, has residences with his wife \u2013 TV celebrity chef Rachael Ray \u2013 in both Lake George and New York City.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cRachael is from the Lake George area so we decided to get a place up here in addition to our place in the city,\u201d said Cusimano. \u201cI have a great studio above my garage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe recorded our last three albums there. We also record in New York City. We did the vocals at NightBird Studios, which is located in the basement of the Sunset Marquis Hotel in L.A. It\u2019s a great studio for overdubs and vocals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cThe majority of work was done at Power Station, which was originally called Power Station and then became Avatar before it switched back to Power Station. It\u2019s one of the most classic-sounding live room studios in the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe got great drum sounds in my studio with Don Gibson, a great producer who has worked with bands like Linkin Park.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe worked with Don on our last album. The process with him is very organic. The big thing &#8212; at the end of the day, it sounds like a modern rock record and it\u2019s cohesive.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cEverywhere You\u2019ve Never Been\u201d features 13 unique tracks, each inspired by a different city from the band\u2019s travels. Without straying away from the band\u2019s familiar rock roots, this album manages to tap into some new and exciting sounds and moods not previously captured on past albums.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI didn\u2019t set out to write an album about cities,\u201d said Cusimano. \u201cAs I was writing songs, I realized the songs were inspired by cities we\u2019ve played.\u201d<br \/>\nNotable cuts include \u201cSmoke \u2018Em If You Got \u2018Em,\u201d which was co-written and features guest vocals by Austin legend, Bob Schneider.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI was in a writing group with Bob called \u2018The Song Game,\u2019\u201d said Cusimano. \u201cThere was a group of 20 songwriters. Every week, we\u2019d be given a phrase or a word and we\u2019d have to write a song using it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Video link for The Cringe \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Hm5jLerJ10g\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/Hm5jLerJ10g<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The show at <\/span><span lang=\"EN\">The Keswick Theater, which has Tesla as the headliner, will start at 8 p.m. Ticket prices range from $38.50-$74.50.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9408\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/heart-of-the-ghost.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9408\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9408\" src=\"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/heart-of-the-ghost-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9408\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Heart Of The Ghost<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">On April 23, Heart Of The Ghost and MJ\/Engle\/Capecchi Trio\u00a0<a>will share the bill at a \u201cFire Museum Presents\u201d concert at <\/a>Martha (2113 East York Street, Philadelphia, <a href=\"http:\/\/firemuseumpresents.com\/\">http:\/\/firemuseumpresents.com<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\"><a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/jarrettgilgore\/heart-of-the-ghost-new-revolution-arts-31916\">Heart Of The Ghost<\/a> is a trio featuring alto saxophonist <a href=\"http:\/\/jarrettgilgore.blogspot.com\/\">Jarrett Gilgore<\/a>, bassist <a href=\"https:\/\/lukestewart.bandcamp.com\/\">Luke Stewart<\/a>, and percussionist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.igmnoise.com\/bio\/\">Ian McColm<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The group has been billed as \u201csomething of a trinity of the finest free jazz improvisers in the region\u201d with \u201cperformances that feel like a kind of s\u00e9ance, with the trio locked into a musical conversation with one another.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe\u2019ve been together for a few years,\u201d said Gilgore. \u201cOur first performance was in March 2016.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Gilgore is both a player and a student of jazz saxophone.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9409\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/jarrett-gilgore.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9409\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9409\" src=\"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/jarrett-gilgore-350x234.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"234\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9409\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jarrett Gilgore<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI received a grant through Johns Hopkins University to study the jazz of Jimmy Lyons,\u201d said Gilgore.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Lyons, who passed away in 1986, was <\/span><span lang=\"EN\">an alto saxophone player best known for his long tenure in the Cecil Taylor Unit. Taylor never worked with another musician as frequently as he did with Lyons. Lyons\u2019 playing, which was influenced by Charlie Parker, kept Taylor\u2019s avant-garde music tethered to the jazz tradition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cThe work I did on the grant involved a pretty extensive transcription of Jimmy Lyons\u2019 compositions and improvisations,\u201d said Gilgore, who grew up in Doylestown and attended Central Bucks West High School.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cIt was a way for me to better my understanding of Jimmy Lyons\u2019 music. He\u2019s always been a big influence of me improvisationally.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cThe nature of improv is all about turning off that relentless critic in your mind. You\u2019re just in it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWhen I was 12 or 13, I really got into improvisation. When I was 14, I listened to Cecil Taylor\u2019s \u2018Conquistador\u2019 album. That was the first time I heard Jimmy Lyons and it was a mixture\u00a0 of intimidation and attraction. To hear free jazz was a liberating thing for me. Ornette Coleman was really the bridge for me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Gilgore\u2019s appreciation of jazz music started when he was very young.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cMy father and grandfather are jazz aficionados,\u201d said Gilmore. \u201cI grew up hearing the music of Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock on sax along with McCoy Tyner on piano. I started piano lessons when I was 7 and sax lessons when I was nine. I was also playing drums at the same time. Ever since I was really young, I was always in to improvisation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">His love of jazz and improv led him to getting a degree from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, a permanent move to Baltimore in 2011 and a hookup with Stewart and McColm in Heart of the Ghost.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe\u2019re now on tour in support of our second album,\u201d said Gilgore, who <\/span><span lang=\"EN\">has performed\/recorded with Tony Malaby, Susan Alcorn,\u00a0Jaimie Branch, Lonnie Holley,\u00a0Laraaji, Michael Formanek, \u00a0Dan Deacon Ensemble,\u00a0Anna &amp; Elizabeth,\u00a0Cass McCombs, Wildhoney, and Rubblebucket.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cIt\u2019s called \u2018Heart of the Ghost II\u2019 and it\u2019s out on Dagoretti Records.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The \u201cHeart of the Ghost II\u201d album was recorded and mixed by Craig Bowen at Tempo House in Baltimore on June 12 and 13, 2018.
