{"id":31849,"date":"2019-06-01T08:55:24","date_gmt":"2019-06-01T12:55:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?p=31849"},"modified":"2019-06-01T08:55:30","modified_gmt":"2019-06-01T12:55:30","slug":"on-stage-shortly-brings-music-mix-to-philly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?p=31849","title":{"rendered":"On Stage: Shortly brings music mix to Philly"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span lang=\"EN\"><strong>By Denny Dyroff<\/strong>, <\/span><em><span lang=\"EN\">Entertainment Editor, The Times<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9649\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/shortly-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9649\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9649\" src=\"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/shortly-2-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9649\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shortly<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">If rock musician Alexandria Maniak lived in Jamaica and chose a project name similar to her current project\u2019s name, it would most like be \u201cSoon Come.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">But Maniak lives in America so her project name\/band name\/professional alias is \u201cShortly.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">On June 1, Shortly will visit the area to headline a show at Everybody Hits (529 W Girard Ave, Philadelphia, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.everybodyhits.com\/\">www.everybodyhits.com<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cShortly has been around for exactly three years,\u201d said Maniak, during a phone interview last week. \u201cIt feels like forever \u2013 and it feels like a short amount of time.\u201d<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Shortly originated as a solo musical project belonging Maniak, a Detroit native. With roots in classical piano, years in punk, and an ear in pop, indie-acoustic, hardcore, and garage rock, Maniak\u2019s music is a clash of many years of genre study and influence. The project\u2019s debut EP, \u201cRichmond\u201d, is threaded by vulnerability and consequence, enlightened by circumstance, and curated by honest and earnest reflection.<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI was solo until June 2017. Then, I had a duo with Austin <\/span><span lang=\"EN\">Stawowczyk. The duo went until June 2018 and then became a band with Parker Grissom, Kris Herrmann, Austin and me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cMy first record was a single called \u2018Matthew\u2019 in August 2016. After that, I released another single \u2013 \u2018Spare Time\u2019 \u2013 and then a full EP called \u2018Richmond.\u2019 That was last September.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cAll the musicians in my band are from Detroit but the EP was recorded in Philadelphia. I spent a week there in November 2017. It was produced and mixed by Joe Reinhart at Head Room Studio.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">About six weeks ago, Shortly released a new single, \u201cMapping\/Haven,\u201d via Triple Crown Records.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cThe new single is about me questioning my sexuality \u2013 and running away from it,\u201d said Maniak.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Music has been a part of Maniak\u2019s life ever since she was really young.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cMy family all played music,\u201d said Maniak. \u201cI was lucky to have it as I was growing up. My mom plays guitar and she taught me. My dad plays bass. My mom was teaching me guitar before I could remember. She told me that I was a little girl sitting there touching the strings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI studied piano a couple times \u2013 when I was four and eight and then I taught myself again when I was 12 or 13. I\u2019d say piano is my primary instrument \u2013 but I don\u2019t play it live. I do most of my writing on an upright piano.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cFor Shortly, a lot of it happens on guitar and piano. Outside of Shortly, I write more on piano for the solo stuff. My songwriting a lot of times starts with a single riff and an idea for lyrics. Other times, it starts off with poetry. After that, it comes together organically.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cMost of my poems are first person and a lot of my songs are first person. I was probably around five when I first started writing songs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Maniak is still in college \u2013pursuing a degree that has nothing to do with poetry or songwriting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI\u2019m finishing up now at Wayne State University in Detroit,\u201d said Maniak, a long-time vegetarian. \u201cI\u2019m in my last year studying graphic design. It\u2019s very digital. I work digitally and draw on the computer.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Video link for Shortly \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Mx_3HYwW3Ag\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/Mx_3HYwW3Ag<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The show at Everybody Hits, which also features Small Talks and Grayling, will start at 8 p.m. Tickets are $12.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Metal fans are in for a treat this weekend with area visits by Vicious Rumors on June 1 and Origin on June 2.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9650\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/vr-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9650\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9650\" src=\"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/vr-3-350x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9650\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Vicious Rumors<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Metal legends\u00a0Vicious Rumors are now on the road in North America with their \u201c40th Anniversary Road Rage Tour.\u201d The American power metal band, which formed in 1979, brings four decades of epic music in their arsenal for this extensive tour in the US and Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">On June 1, the tour touches down at a venue a few miles below the Pennsylvania-Delaware &#8212; Bar XIII (1706 Philadelphia Pike, Wilmington, Delaware, 302-746-2213,<a href=\"http:\/\/barxiii.com\/\">http:\/\/barxiii.com<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Geoff Thorpe\u00a0founded the band 40 years ago and there have been more than 40 musicians on the band\u2019s roster over the last four decades.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The current lineup features Geoff Thorpe &#8211; Guitar, Vocals (1979\u2013present); Larry Howe &#8211; Drums (1985\u20132000, 2005\u2013present); Gunnar D\u00fcGrey &#8211; Guitar (2017\u2013present); Nick Courtney &#8211; Vocals (2018-present); and Cody Green &#8211; Bass (2018-present).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cLarry and I have been playing together for a while,\u201d said Thorpe, during a recent phone interview from a Canadian tour stop in Ottawa, Ontario. And, I\u2019ve got three really talented young guys in the band.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cCody is from Seattle. Nick and Gunnar are from Portland and Larry and I live in the Bay Area. It\u2019s a whole West Coast thing. I grew up in L.A., moved to Hawaii and then came back to the Bay Area in the 70s wave of thrash and power metal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cIn the last two years, the five of us have done 108 shows together including a lot in the last year. It\u2019s great that we were able to do it before we made a record.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe did a 30th anniversary tour of \u2018Digital Dictator\u2019 that we thought would be about three weeks. It turned into 60 shows in the U.S. and then a big European tour that included playing at a huge festival. We got back and went right back on the road in America. We\u2019re just rocking out every night.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Vicious\u00a0Rumors\u00a0just finished a 20-date European tour that took the band to packed houses in Spain, Italy, Switzerland,\u00a0Germany, Austria,\u00a0Belgium and the Netherlands. The band finished off with two sets at Full Metal Cruise from Mallorca, Spain to Marseille, France and also played the prestigious Keep it True Festival in Germany.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cNow, we\u2019re out with our \u201840th Anniversary North American Road Rage Tour,\u2019\u201d said Thorpe. \u201cIt\u2019s a completely different show than the previous tour. We go all the way back to songs from \u2018Soldiers of the Night,\u2019 which came out in 1985. It\u2019s a real classic set that has been getting great response from our fans.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The band is also currently in pre-production for a new studio album which will be released on the legendary\u00a0SPV\/Steamhammer label. Until then, the most recent release by Vicious Rumors has been a live \u201c40th Anniversary\u201d DVD, which is only available at the shows and through the band\u2019s social media.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe recorded our entire concert at the Bang Your Head!!!, a heavy metal festival in southern Germany,\u201d said Thorpe. \u201cIt\u2019s really high-quality audio and video. It\u2019s a little thing we did on our own with SPV\u2019s blessing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe\u2019ve been with SPV for 10 years and just signed for two more albums. The band \u2013 Paul Ryan, Guitars, Backing Vocals; Mike Flores, Bass, Backing Vocals; John Longstreth, Drums; Jason Keyser, Lead Vocals \u2013 is known for combining a harsh sound with a high level of technical skill.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">For 20 years, Origin has engaged a full-blown sensory assault of tight, taut, and technical death metal amplified by flashes of grindcore and groove.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">In 2017, Origin began moving to a higher plateau with its album \u201cUnparalleled Universe\u201d \u2013 an expansion of its sonic palette.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">A few weeks ago, Origin released a new album via Agonia Records. \u201cAbiogenesis &#8211; A Coming Into Existence,\u201d in which founding member Ryan revisits the band\u2019s earliest and unreleased creations. The album will be available on May 3rd worldwide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Abiogenesis is the process by which the origin of life has arisen from non-living matter. The details of this process are still a path unknown. The transition from non-living to a living entity was not a single event but a gradual process of increasing complexity. This process is what Origin\u2019s new album is all about.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cAbiogenesis &#8211; A Coming Into Existence\u201d was recorded and recreated from the original 1991-1996 era that preceded Origin\u2019s official formation. The album features never-before released tracks that laid foundations to Origin\u2019s long journey as death metal purveyors. The tracks on \u201cAbiogensis\u201d were recreated by Ryan who recorded all instruments himself between 2013 and 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cIt\u2019s a whole concept,\u201d said Ryan, during a recent phone interview as he travelled to a gig in Chicago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cOur first record \u2013 a four-song EP titled \u2018A Coming into Existence\u2019 has been out of print for years. So, I made that part of the new album along with eight freefall songs. This was just all stuff I had done in the past. Now, we\u2019re just playing one of the songs live.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Fortunately for Origin\u2019s fans, new material is on the way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI\u2019m always working on new stuff,\u201d said Ryan. \u201cAnytime a guitar is in my hand, I\u2019m creating music. I\u2019m going through the motions of trying to figure it out \u2013 finding that riff or melody. Usually, I\u2019ll stick two riffs together at the start. Creating a song takes more time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Surprisingly, guitar wasn\u2019t Ryan\u2019s first instrument.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI started on drums,\u201d said Ryan. \u201cThen, I started playing viola, but I really wanted to play guitar. I picked up guitar and started playing in bands in high school.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI got into KISS and then darker and heavier stuff. I heard bands like Quiet Riot, M\u00f6tley Cr\u00fce, Dokken and Iron Maiden and got addicted to finding new music. After that, I got into Napalm Death and Carcass. The group is closing in on the end of its first decade.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe spent all of 2011 in formation and released our debut record in 2012,\u201d said Saint Thomas, during a phone interview Tuesday from his home in Delaware Water Gap. \u201cWe got out of town for the first time in 2012. There is no music scene here, so we had to tour.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">BSC\u2019s connection to Waits\u2019 music goes back a while. Saint Thomas first performed the Waits show in 2011 at the Deer Head Inn, a jazz club in Delaware Water Gap.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Bovine Social Club officially formed after the first Waits show and has performed Waits\u2019 songs onstage ever since. But BSC doesn\u2019t act like a tribute band trying to recreate Waits\u2019 music. Instead, they re-interpret the songs and present them in the band\u2019s own Americana format.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cBovine Social Club is open architecture,\u201d said Saint Thomas. \u201cEach tour is open to different players \u2013 depending on different things.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Known for their sold-out Waits re-creations at the legendary jazz club Deer Head Inn, the Bovines have taken their Clap Hands show on the road to NJ, PA, VT, NY, MD, with a perfect spectacle of love and misery, angst and serenity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The current lineup features an ensemble of musicians including vocalist and writer Samuel Saint Thomas, bassist and vocalist Ron Baumann, Irish fiddler and vocalist Casey McGinty, keyboardist and vocalist Damian Calcagne, singer Tyrent Taylor, guitarist Steve Shalit, and drummer AJ Jump.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cThe band is from all over this area,\u201d said Saint Thomas. \u201cCasey and Tyrent are from Allentown. Ron and Steve are from New York and AJ is from Scranton. Casey and I hold down the lead vocal spots.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cTo get ready for this five-show tour, we had three full band rehearsals and a few smaller pickup rehearsals. We also had to rehearse the poetry of Tom Waits and Waits\u2019 comments between songs. I picked musicians who love Tom Waits. We chose songs that were their favorites and that they wanted to dig more into. We want to make these songs and poetry our own and to express what they mean to us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cMy father was a Pentecostal preacher. In his music, Tom Waits preaches &#8212; much like the way my father preached. That\u2019s just one thing that attracted me to Waits\u2019 music.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cOn this tour, we\u2019ve already played shows in Blairstown, New Jersey and Brooklyn, New York. We have the show at 118 North and then we\u2019ll finish with shows in Brattleboro, Vermont and Easton, Maryland. These five shows were a test run to see if it had any legs. We\u2019ll probably do it again next spring.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The Bovines\u2019 most recent release is &#8220;Live at Mauch Chunk Opera House,&#8221; which was recorded in 2017 at the legendary music hall in Jim Thorpe.
