{"id":34377,"date":"2020-04-22T13:58:25","date_gmt":"2020-04-22T17:58:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?p=34377"},"modified":"2020-04-22T13:58:26","modified_gmt":"2020-04-22T17:58:26","slug":"commissioner-plant-tree-of-hope-to-honor-earth-day-covid-19-victims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?p=34377","title":{"rendered":"Commissioner plant &#8216;Tree of Hope&#8217; to honor Earth Day, COVID-19 victims"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_11574\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Commissioners-Kichline-Moskowitz-and-Maxwell-with-Tree-of-Hope-sign.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11574\" class=\"wp-image-11574 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Commissioners-Kichline-Moskowitz-and-Maxwell-with-Tree-of-Hope-sign-350x217.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"217\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-11574\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chester County Commissioners Marian Moskowitz, Michelle Kichline and Josh Maxwell plant a \u201ctree of hope\u201d to honor Chester County\u2019s fight against COVID-19 on the 50th anniversary of Earth Day.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>EXTON \u2014 To commemorate Earth Day 2020, the Chester County Commissioners had originally planned to hand out hundreds of small trees to county residents \u2013 for planting to celebrate Earth Day\u2019s 50<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary.<\/p>\n<p>But that was before COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>So today \u2013 the official 50<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of Earth Day, Chester County Commissioners Marian Moskowitz, Josh Maxwell and Michelle Kichline planted just one tree instead.\u00a0 A \u201ctree of hope\u201d that will forever commemorate Chester County\u2019s fight against the coronavirus global pandemic that impacted County residents\u2019 way of life for a period of time in 2020. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlanting this tree gives us a living tribute that will benefit present and future generations, but that will also carry with it a memory of what will become the past,\u201d Chester County Commissioners\u2019 Chair Marian Moskowitz said. \u00a0\u201cPlanting this tree also reminds us how much we value the outdoors and the chance to enjoy it together\u2026not six feet apart and socially distanced.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The species of tree planted in Chester County\u2019s Exton Park this morning is Serviceberry <em>Amelanchiar arboea, <\/em>a Pennsylvania native ornamental tree that will bloom each year with delicate white flowers arranged in clusters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe tree was selected for many reasons, but one that stands out is that it will bloom each spring with clusters of white flowers \u2013 reminding us that the coronavirus may have kept us physically distanced, but figuratively it has brought us closer together as families, and as a community,\u201d Chester County Commissioner Josh Maxwell said.<\/p>\n<p>Chester County Parks and Open Space Preservation staff selected the Serviceberry tree especially for this occasion.\u00a0 In addition to the cluster of white flowers that bloom each spring, it is one of the finest small trees for fall color, with leaves that turn vivid shades of red and gold.\u00a0 It also produces berry-like fruit that ripens in June and is loved by birds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe would have loved to be able to hold our big public celebration of Earth Day in Exton Park this year, but COVID-19 put a stop to that,&#8221; Chester County Commissioner Michelle Kichline said. &#8220;Instead, we are planting a tree known to be resilient, and that weathers the storms.\u00a0 Like this tree, our community is resilient.\u00a0 We will weather this coronavirus storm, and be stronger for it.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>EXTON \u2014 To commemorate Earth Day 2020, the Chester County Commissioners had originally planned to hand out hundreds of small trees to county residents \u2013 for planting to celebrate Earth Day\u2019s 50th anniversary.
