{"id":36513,"date":"2021-02-03T09:10:25","date_gmt":"2021-02-03T14:10:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?p=36513"},"modified":"2021-02-03T09:10:32","modified_gmt":"2021-02-03T14:10:32","slug":"green-awarded-1st-scholarship-focused-on-local-police-diversity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?p=36513","title":{"rendered":"Green awarded 1st scholarship focused on local police diversity"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_13317\" style=\"width: 198px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Bakari-Green-scholarship-recipient-photo-January-2021.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13317\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-13317\" src=\"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Bakari-Green-scholarship-recipient-photo-January-2021-188x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"188\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13317\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bakari Green, Jr.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>WEST CHESTER \u2014 Chester County resident Bakari Green, Jr. has been named the first recipient of a scholarship focused on diversifying law enforcement in Chester County.\u00a0 The scholarship to the Delaware County Community College Municipal Police Academy is the first award made to a student of color, by the Committee for PA Act 120 Certification Scholarship.\u00a0 Financial support for the scholarship comes from The Lasko Family Foundation, with administrative support from JusticeRain INC, a West Chester non-profit organization that works locally against broad issues of injustice.<\/p>\n<p>According to Green, who graduated from Coatesville Area Senior High School and West Chester University with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice, he grew up in an environment where he saw people struggling with drugs and the problems drugs caused. \u201cI want to help people and to see better outcomes,\u201d said Green. \u201cPolice\u2014regardless of color\u2014are here to help. During this Black Lives Matter era, I want to be a good example of positive change.\u201d<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The need for such a scholarship was expressed by Chester County Sheriff Fredda Maddox at a meeting of community members gathered by an informal group referred to as \u201cthe Elders\u201d that works toward racial justice. \u201cAll too often when Pennsylvania law enforcement agencies try to hire Black and Brown police, there aren\u2019t candidates who have been trained and certified under Pennsylvania\u2019s Act 120,\u201d said Maddox. \u201cThey have college degrees and stellar credentials, but some don\u2019t realize that they need specific training and certification to serve. Other times, after paying for college, graduates don\u2019t have additional funds to attend a municipal police academy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A Committee for PA Act 120 Certification Scholarship formed and members\u2014Rabbi Dr. Maury Hoberman; Abdul Mughees; and Sheriff Fredda Maddox, Chief Deputy Kevin Dykes and Carol Metzker of the Chester County Sheriff\u2019s Office\u2014took on the challenge of establishing a scholarship in two months. Input and support also came from a team at Delaware County Community College, the Lasko Family Foundation and JusticeRain, INC.<\/p>\n<p>Two additional scholarships are available for eligible students of color to attend the College\u2019s Municipal Police Academy training beginning July 2021.
