{"id":3789,"date":"2012-06-03T06:00:02","date_gmt":"2012-06-03T10:00:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?p=3789"},"modified":"2012-06-02T22:45:36","modified_gmt":"2012-06-03T02:45:36","slug":"sun-is-great-sunburn-not-so-much","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?p=3789","title":{"rendered":"Sun is great, sunburn, not so much"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: medium;\"><em><strong>Summertime means being smart and taking care of your skin<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong>By Kelly Hockenberry<\/strong>, <span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><em>Columnist, KennettTimes.com<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/UTKellyColumn.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-3791\" style=\"margin: 4px;\" title=\"UTKellyColumn\" src=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/UTKellyColumn-250x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"175\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/UTKellyColumn-250x300.jpg 250w, https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/UTKellyColumn.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 175px) 100vw, 175px\" \/><\/a>You know what is NOT an attractive look?<\/p>\n<p>A sizzling red sunburn.<\/p>\n<p>You know how I know this?\u00a0 Because it has happened to me (GO FIGURE) many, many times.<\/p>\n<p>You need proof?<\/p>\n<p>Right now, my dermatologist is sitting on the deck of his ocean front beach house toasting my Irish heritage.\u00a0 I\u2019m sure of it.<\/p>\n<p>For the first twenty-five years of life, I was absolutely convinced that if I applied the right concoction of oils, I would magically brown like an Italian girl. \u00a0The fact that I was using OIL at all should be frightening in and of itself.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I remember a boy telling me if I could somehow get my freckles to merge together, I would be the ultimate color\u2026.which, naturally, did wonders for my self-confidence.<\/p>\n<p>I do not know what finally prompted me to embrace the SPF that I should have been using all along; but thankfully, I came to my senses.<\/p>\n<p>I will not sit on the beach without wearing a hat (although, I must get better at remembering to do the same at the pool).\u00a0 Sunglasses are mandatory when outside\u2026the bigger the frame, the better!\u00a0 They provide comfort as well as prevent wrinkles from deepening around the eye.<\/p>\n<p>I LOVE tinted moisturizers that provide a healthy dose of sunscreen.\u00a0 My current obsession is \u201cToo Faced Beauty Balm\u201d with SPF 20 for everyday use.\u00a0 It evens out your skin tone and provides much needed coverage.<\/p>\n<p>It may appear high maintenance to wear lipstick to the beach; but adding color with an SPF built in (or additional balm on top) will prevent lips from getting burnt.\u00a0 I have noticed that my lips are freckled from too much sun over the years.\u00a0 Yikes.\u00a0 That sounds sexy, doesn\u2019t it?<\/p>\n<p>Every six months when I disrobe at the dermatologist\u2019s office for a full body scan (good times), it is almost inevitable that he will find some little blemish that \u201cmust be removed.\u201d\u00a0 It is like scrapping the barnacles off an old ship.\u00a0 My poor weather-ravaged body that I have exposed (unwillingly) to the elements is finally rebelling.<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, my children will never experience the pain of a good 3<sup>rd<\/sup> degree burn.\u00a0 They are shellacked with sunscreen the minute they step out into the sunshine.\u00a0 Not that they make it easy for me.\u00a0 Not at all!\u00a0 Even at ages 11 and 14, I still have to chase them around like an idiot to apply.<\/p>\n<p>Get out today and enjoy the summer rays!\u00a0 Just don\u2019t forget to slather on the sun protection!<\/p>\n<p>Lord knows, my dermatologist does not need any more luxury vehicles crowding his 6-car garage\u2026<\/p>\n<p>HAPPY WEEKEND!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Summertime means being smart and taking care of your skin By Kelly Hockenberry, Columnist, KennettTimes.com You know what is NOT an attractive look?
