{"id":4096,"date":"2012-07-01T06:00:04","date_gmt":"2012-07-01T10:00:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?p=4096"},"modified":"2012-06-30T10:10:06","modified_gmt":"2012-06-30T14:10:06","slug":"you-can-take-the-girl-out-of-the-city","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?p=4096","title":{"rendered":"You can take the girl out of the city&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: medium;\"><strong><em>Wyoming offers spectacular views, but it&#8217;s hard to say which is scarier: the local fashions or the need to carry bear repellant<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong>By Kelly Hockenberry<\/strong>, <span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><em>Columnist, The Times<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/UTKellyColumn4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-4098\" title=\"UTKellyColumn\" src=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/UTKellyColumn4-250x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"175\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/UTKellyColumn4-250x300.jpg 250w, https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/UTKellyColumn4.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 175px) 100vw, 175px\" \/><\/a>I am a city slicker (even though I live in rural Chester County).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Kelly1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" style=\"border: 2px solid black; margin: 4px;\" title=\"Kelly1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Kelly1-300x225.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a>I enjoy being a mere hop, skip and a jump away from great malls, little boutiques and nail salons.\u00a0 I can appreciate beautiful scenery, certainly. \u00a0However, give me the modern conveniences of home and I\u2019m a happy gal.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>My family just returned from a gorgeous vacation in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.\u00a0 The mountains were spectacular, the air was crisp and the sky was vast and full of stars.<\/p>\n<p>We stayed in a charming little log cabin that sat, picturesquely, on the edge of a lake.\u00a0 There was no TV, no radio, no cell service, no WiFi.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Kelly2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" style=\"border: 2px solid black; margin: 4px;\" title=\"Kelly2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Kelly2-224x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>It was blissful\u2026.because I knew that I would be coming back home.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t get me wrong.\u00a0 There were many, many things about Wyoming that wooed me:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Kelly3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" style=\"border: 2px solid black; margin: 4px;\" title=\"Kelly3\" src=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Kelly3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"291\" height=\"291\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>1. They named a town after me.<br \/>\n2. The natives of this state take their physical fitness VERY seriously.\u00a0 Everyone bikes or hikes or skis or snowboards.\u00a0 Age is not an excuse.\u00a0 And, I dig that.<br \/>\n3. At an altitude of 8,000 feet, you literally WEIGH LESS!\u00a0 Unfortunately, our little cabin did not have a scale either (which was a much bigger bummer than no TV after finding out that bit of trivia!)<br \/>\n4. The huckleberry ice cream was, quite possibly, the best ice cream I have ever tasted.<br \/>\n5. There was ZERO humidity, so, my hair was beyond fabulous.\u00a0 Beyond.<\/p>\n<p>Well, why not move to Wyoming?<\/p>\n<p>Ummmmmm\u2026.<\/p>\n<p>1. They all wear Tevas and North Face.\u00a0 EVERYWHERE.\u00a0 Like, even out to dinner.<br \/>\n2. They say \u201cepic\u201d to describe just about EVERYTHING.<br \/>\n3. There was no JCrew.\u00a0 For hundreds of miles.\u00a0 Whhhhaaaatttt????<br \/>\n4. No one wore lipstick to hike.\u00a0 (Except me)<br \/>\n5. They get so much snow in the winter that certain roads in Yellowstone close for SEVEN months.<br \/>\n6. I don\u2019t like to be cold.<br \/>\n7. There are signs like this:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Kelly4.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" style=\"border: 2px solid black; margin: 4px;\" title=\"Kelly4\" src=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Kelly4-300x225.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a>8. You need to carry \u201cBear Spray\u201d with you on a hike.\u00a0 Because, apparently, 14 or so people a year get mauled to death by a bear.\u00a0 Comforting, right?<br \/>\n9. Country music makes me want to crawl right out of my skin.<br \/>\n10. Grown men should not wear cowboy hats and boots.\u00a0 It\u2019s 2012.\u00a0 I\u2019m pretty sure that the West has been civilized\u2026.even if I couldn\u2019t watch BRAVO or listen to club music.<\/p>\n<p>Despite these few things, overall, the vacation was a whopping success!\u00a0 We hiked, fished, rode horses and went white water rafting.<\/p>\n<p>And, I did not go shopping for MORE THAN ONE WEEK!<\/p>\n<p>I will make up for that today.<\/p>\n<p>Happy Weekend!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wyoming offers spectacular views, but it&#8217;s hard to say which is scarier: the local fashions or the need to carry bear repellant By Kelly Hockenberry, Columnist, The Times I am a city slicker (even though I live in rural Chester County).
