Click or tap to follow the link.\" href=\"https:\/\/citywinery.com\/philadelphia\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">https:\/\/citywinery.com\/philadelphia<\/a>) on October 31.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s Halloween night but the only scary thing will be how well Foley plays electric guitar. It\u2019s \u201cscary good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Foley\u2019s new CD, \u201cLive in Austin, Vol. 1,\u201d came out October 27 on Stony Plain Records and she immediately hit the road for a fall tour. She has seven more dates in the Northeast and then the rest of her shows through the end of April are in Texas. Fortunately, one of those seven shows is in Philly while another will be at the Elkton Music Hall (107 North Street, Elkton, Maryland, <a id=\"OWAee188001-0169-cdb7-57ad-69b30ffeb04f\" href=\"https:\/\/www.elktonmusichall.com\/\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">https:\/\/www.elktonmusichall.com<\/a>) on November 2.<br \/>\n\u201cI had never done an electric live album before,\u201d said Foley, during a phone interview last week from her home in Austin. \u201cI had been getting requests from fans for a long time.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecorded at the Continental Club in Austin, it has a great vibe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe knew we had to use the Continental Club. We\u2019re very loyal to Steve (Wertheimer, owner of the Continental Club). \u201cThis is \u2018Vol. 1,\u2019 There will be a \u2018Vol. 2\u2019 with more roots stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Considering Foley has released 15 albums over the last 30 years, there is no dearth of material from which to choose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a good selection of songs &#8212; a career-spanning selection,\u201d said Foley, who won the\u00a0Juno Award\u00a0for her CD, \u201cLove Coming Down,\u201d in 2001. \u201cWe go all the way back to \u2018Young Girl Blues\u2019 (Foley\u2019s debut album in 1992). There was a lot of music to choose from.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m usually about new songs. I tend to be really current. My most recent albums were \u2018Pinky\u2019s Blues\u2019 in 2021 and \u2018The Ice Queen\u2019 in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn my show now, I\u2019m doing a lot from the new album \u2013 almost all of it. Some of the songs sound the way they were recorded over the years, and some have evolved. Also, I\u2019ve aged \u2013 but I still have angst.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Foley\u2019s live shoes are energetic and powerful \u2013 just what you need for a live recording.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe recorded two nights in a row at the Continental &#8212; four hours each night,\u201d said Foley. \u201cIt\u2019s a 45-minute \u2018best of the best.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were trying a lot of stuff. They were slightly different sets. We rehearsed a bunch of stuff. After listening to what was recorded, we picked what sounded best.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Foley\u2019s most recent studio album was \u201cPinky\u2019s Blues,\u201d which came out two years ago.<\/p>\n<p>During the pandemic, Foley and\u00a0organist Mike Flanigin\u00a0entered Fire Station Studios in San Marcos, Texas, with engineer\u00a0Chris Bell,\u00a0drummer\u00a0Chris Layton, and bassist\u00a0Jon Penner. They had just finished working an album by Flanigan and were comfortable enough with their social distancing to work in an otherwise closed studio.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe recorded \u2018Pinky\u2019s Blues\u2019 during the lockdown,\u201d said Foley, won Best Traditional Female (Koko Taylor\u00a0Award) at the 2020 Blues Music Awards in Memphis. \u201cIt came out after the lockdown, and we\u2019ve been touring ever since.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It seems as if Foley were born to be a musician \u2013 a travelling musician.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy family was very musical,\u201d said Foley who has earned seventeen\u00a0Maple Blues Awards\u00a0and three Trophees de Blues de France. \u201cMy father was a guitarist and my brother also played guitar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Foley was born in\u00a0Ottawa,\u00a0Ontario. She learned to play guitar at age 13, became interested in blues music from listening to\u00a0the Rolling Stones, and played her first gig at age 16. After high school graduation, she relocated to\u00a0Vancouver\u00a0where she formed The Sue Foley Band and toured Canada.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI started playing live a lot when I was living in Vancouver,\u201d said Foley. \u201cWhen I was 21, I moved to Austin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Foley signed with Antone&#8217;s Records in 1992 and recorded her first four albums for the legendary label \u2013 \u201cYoung Girl Blues,\u201d \u201cWithout a Warning,\u201d \u201cBig City Blues\u201d and \u201cWalk in the Sun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAntone\u2019s was a big deal at the time,\u201d said Foley, who has received several nominations at the\u00a0Blues Music Awards\u00a0in Memphis, Tennessee. \u201cEven in Canada, we were aware of what was going on in Austin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, Foley has also recorded albums for Shanachie, Ruf, Blind Pig and her current label, Stony Plain (the home of her last three releases.)<\/p>\n<p>Video link for Sue Foley &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/bFak4Kp-Tks\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/bFak4Kp-Tks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The show on October 31 at City Winery will start at 7:30 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Tickets are $32.<\/p>\n<p>The show at Elkton Music Hall on November 2 will start at 8 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Tickets are $38.21.<\/p>\n<p>Halloween is a holiday about ghosts and other otherworldly sights.<\/p>\n<p>Watching a veteran jazz saxophonist with almost 80 years of experience lead his band on stage is an otherworldly sight \u2013 and it\u2019s happening this Halloween.<\/p>\n<p>On October 31, Ars Nova Workshop is presenting Marshall Allen\u2019s Ghost Horizons at Solar Myth (1131 South Broad Street, Philadelphia, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arsnovaworkshop.org\/\">www.arsnovaworkshop.org<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The Halloween\u00a0show at Solar\u00a0Myth\u00a0will showcase Sun Ra Arkestra maestro Marshall Allen\u2019s with one of his bands &#8212; Ghost Horizons &#8211;alongside an all-star cast of musicians.<\/p>\n<p>On May 24, 2023, Allen turned 99.<\/p>\n<p>After almost a full century on the planet, Allen remains a vital force \u2013 an imaginative spirit who has been with jazz since its infancy.<\/p>\n<p>He was a driving force in the Sun Ra Arkestra for more than 60 years.
