{"id":43593,"date":"2024-11-09T08:57:16","date_gmt":"2024-11-09T13:57:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?p=43593"},"modified":"2024-11-09T08:57:17","modified_gmt":"2024-11-09T13:57:17","slug":"what-to-do-honoring-our-veterans-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?p=43593","title":{"rendered":"What To Do: Honoring our veterans"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><strong>By Denny Dyroff,<\/strong> <em>Entertainment Editor, The Times<\/em><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-20029\" src=\"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/53877322257_10b44de946_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"194\" height=\"300\" \/>November 11 is Veterans Day, and many area attractions will honor veterans in a variety of ways.<\/div>\n<div>The motto for the day is the Latin phrase, \u201cNos salutant vos,\u201d which translates to \u201cWe salute you\u201d in English.<\/div>\n<div>The theme for Veterans Day\u00a02024\u00a0is \u201cA Legacy of Loyalty and Service\u201d, and this year\u2019s winning poster was designed by Myisha Godette, a retired, disabled Army Veteran from Queens, New York.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Veterans Day\u00a0(originally known as\u00a0Armistice Day) is a\u00a0federal holiday in the United States\u00a0observed annually on November 11, for honoring\u00a0military veterans\u00a0of the\u00a0United States Armed Forces\u00a0(who were discharged under conditions other than dishonorable).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>There will be a special wreath laying ceremony in Coatesville on November 11 at 10:45 a.m. at Veterans Park \u2013 also known as Gateway Park.<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The site\u2019s location is First Avenue at Lincoln Highway in Coatesville. Visitors are invited to gather in the park for a wreath laying ceremony hosted by the Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 1777 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 287.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The 10th Annual Philadelphia Veterans Day Parade will be held on November 10 starting at 21st\u00a0Street and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div id=\"attachment_20030\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20030\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-20030\" src=\"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/phlvetparade-350x233.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"233\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-20030\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Philadelphia Veterans Parade<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Philadelphia Veterans Parade has a new route for 2024. It will kick off at noon at 21st and the Parkway and finish up just past the Philadelphia Art Museum at Eakins Oval.<\/p><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The Philadelphia Veterans Day Festival takes place from noon-4 p.m. at Eakins Oval. Some of the participating food trucks are Farina Pasta &amp; Noodle, Deke\u2019s BBQ, Federal Donut and Grubaholics.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>There will be another Veterans Day Parade in the area on Monday November 11.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Media\u2019s 2024 Veterans Day Parade will get underway at 11 a.m. on State Street. The Grand Marshall will be Master Sgt. Tanya Harris.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Hagley Museum and Library (Route 141, Wilmington, Delaware, 302-658-2400, <a id=\"OWA0ac84357-2484-6808-d401-1686306d57ca\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" title=\"Protected by Outlook: http:\/\/www.hagley.org\/. Click or tap to follow the link.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hagley.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.hagley.org<\/a>) will celebrate Veterans Day Weekend on November 9 and \u00a0with free admission for current military members, veterans, and their families.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Hagley is also presenting a special event called \u201cScience\u00a0Saturday\u201d on November 9.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Visitors of all ages are invited to discover solutions to\u00a0science\u00a0and engineering challenges.\u00a0Science\u00a0Saturdays are drop-in activities, so visitors are free to stop by at any time during the event hours \u2013 noon-4 p.m.<\/div>\n<div>The program on November 9 will be \u201cScience\u00a0Saturday: \u00a0Robotics Roundup.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Participants will be able to learn how robots are built and programmed. The event will run from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Visitors can commemorate the founding of the Marine Corps at the graveside of General Jacob Zeilin, 7th\u00a0Commandant of the Marine Corps during the Civil War.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The commemoration will be followed by a Veterans\u2019 Day tour of those killed in action and buried at Laurel Hill.<\/div>\n<div>Laurel Hill will also present \u201cHot Spots and\u00a0Storied\u00a0Plots\u201d walking tour at 10 a.m.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>In life and in death, we all have stories to tell, and what better place to hear tales of wonder than Philadelphia\u2019s most famous home of the dead?<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>This tour provides an informative overview of Laurel Hill\u2019s long history, which includes many of the marble masterpieces, stunning views, and legendary stories about Laurel Hill.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cHot Spots and\u00a0Storied\u00a0Plots\u201d is the perfect introduction for anyone who enjoys beautiful art, scenic nature, and fascinating history. Trains depart at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m.<\/i><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The round-trip train ride travels to the village of Glen Mills and back and lasts for 90 minutes. During the brief layover in Glen Mills, riders can explore the historic Pennsylvania Railroad station and have a snack in the railroad\u2019s picnic grove along the Chester Creek.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Tickets are $30 for adults and $25 for children.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The Colebrookdale Railroad (South Washington Street, Boyertown, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.colebrookdalerailroad.com\/\">www.colebrookdalerailroad.com<\/a>)\u00a0is running its \u201cAutumn Splendor Fall Foliage Excursions\u201d on November 10, 16, 17, 23 and 24.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>These rides feature views of some of the best foliage in the area. The train departs at 7 p.m. and the total trip time is 45 minutes.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cWine &amp; Cheese Train\u201d boarding is 30 minutes before the scheduled departure. Riders must be 21 or older and have their photo ID ready when they board.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Featured wines are carefully selected from Waltz Vineyards, and cheeses are paired accordingly. Beer and select non-alcoholic beverages are also available for purchase upon request. Riders can purchase a souvenir wine glass on board the train if desired.
