{"id":43943,"date":"2025-01-31T10:06:18","date_gmt":"2025-01-31T15:06:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?p=43943"},"modified":"2025-01-31T10:06:18","modified_gmt":"2025-01-31T15:06:18","slug":"dasd-celebrates-black-history-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?p=43943","title":{"rendered":"DASD celebrates Black History Month"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div id=\"attachment_20286\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20286\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-20286\" src=\"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/DASD-Black-History-Month.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"262\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-20286\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">During last year\u2019s Black History Month celebration, second-grade students at East Ward Elementary School honored influential figures by researching and presenting on notable individuals from Black history.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Black History Month is observed annually in February, and Downingtown Area School District (DASD) is proud to join this year\u2019s celebration of the contributions and successes of African Americans both in the United States and around the world.<\/p><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The individual credited for the creation of the month of celebration is Carter G. Woodson. Black History Month became officially recognized in 1976 by President Gerald Ford, who said, \u201cseize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Throughout February, DASD students and staff will engage in a variety of educational and creative activities, including studying the lives and legacies of prominent African-American figures, reading works by legendary authors, and participating in performances such as songs, dances, and poetry.<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>As part of the district\u2019s celebration, DASD will welcome award-winning actor and singer Leslie Odom, Jr., who will speak to students about perseverance, achieving their goals, and staying focused on their dreams.
