The Dandy Warhols<\/p><\/div>\n

Wednesday night is frequently a slow night for concerts in the area.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
While tonight\u2019s schedule may not rank high in the quantity department, it definitely holds its own in the quality category.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Two bands who have been making music for more than three decades will be performing at local venues on May 14.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The Dandy Warhols, who got their start in 1994, will be headlining a show at the Ardmore Music Hall (23 East Lancaster Avenue, Ardmore, www.ardmoremusic.com<\/a>).<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Living Colour, who were formed in 1984, will be performing at the Keswick Theater.<\/div>\n

However, there is a difference in the bands\u2019 longevity.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Living Colour has just one original member left in the band. The Dandy Warhols, meanwhile, have three of the four original members.<\/div>\n
They have had the same lineup since 1998 — Courtney Taylor-Taylor (vocals), Zia McCabe (bass, keyboards), Brent Deboer (drums) and Peter Holmstr\u00f6m. The band’s name is a play on the name of American\u00a0pop artist\u00a0Andy Warhol.<\/div>\n

The Dandy Warhols\u2019 debut album was \u201cDandy Rules OK,\u201d which released on 6 April 1995 by\u00a0Tim\/Kerr Records. The band gained recognition after they were signed to\u00a0Capitol Records\u00a0and released their\u00a0major label\u00a0album debut,\u00a0\u201c…The Dandy Warhols Come Down,\u201d in 1997.<\/div>\n

In 2001, the band rose to new levels of fame after their song \u201cBohemian Like You\u201d enjoyed extensive exposure due to being featured in a\u00a0Vodafone\u00a0advertisement.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The Dandy Warhols were the subject of the 2004 documentary film\u00a0\u201cDig!,\u201d along with\u00a0San Francisco\u00a0psychedelic\u00a0outfit\u00a0The Brian Jonestown Massacre. They have released 13\u00a0studio albums, two\u00a0compilation albums and six\u00a0EPs over the last three decades.<\/div>\n

\u201cWe celebrated our 30th anniversary last year,\u201d said Holmstr\u00f6m, during a phone interview Monday afternoon from a tour stop in Rochester, New York.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cThis year is the 30th anniversary of our first album and 25th anniversary of \u2018Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia.\u2019<\/div>\n
\u201cIt definitely blows my mind. I didn\u2019t expect this to last more than five years.\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Over the last 30 years, the band members have remained friends and the music they make has remained fresh.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re all still very much into the music we make onstage and in the studio,\u201d said Holmstr\u00f6m. \u201cWe all get along just enough to make this possible \u2013 probably because we had just enough success to keep us dependent on each other.\u201d<\/div>\n

The Dandy Warhols\u2019 most recent album is \u201cRockmaker,\u201d which was released through Sunset Blvd Records and Beat the World on March 15, 2024 and includes guest appearances by\u00a0Frank Black,\u00a0Slash, and\u00a0Debbie Harry.<\/div>\n

It marks their return to rock music after the over three-hour-long\u00a0experimental\u00a0album\u00a0\u201cTafelmuzik Means More When You’re Alone.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cThe \u2018Rockmaker\u2019 album was the result of a long time with just Courtney and me in the studio,\u201d said Holmstr\u00f6m. \u201cIt was started pre-COVID. It came together during that time period mainly because we didn\u2019t have anything else to do.\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
It helped a lot that the band has its own recording studio. Located in the northwest section of Portland, the Odditorium is part converted warehouse, part state-of-the-art recording studio and part elaborate party space for the band and its extended family.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cWith having our own studio, we\u2019re able to build tracks over years,\u201d said Holmstr\u00f6m. \u201cChanges happen all the way into mastering because it\u2019s so easy to slot something in \u2013 even down to EQ and volume settings.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cWith the Dandys, it\u2019s really hard to finish. A lot of us just give up and walk away and Courtney is left tweaking until he\u2019s satisfied.<\/div>\n
\u201cIn the past, Courtney did the majority of the writing. He still does 90 per cent of the vocals but everyone is involved. On the last album, Courtney and I co-wrote a lot. This is much more a full band effort.\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Holmstr\u00f6m and his mates hope to have their next album out in a more timely manner.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
In the meantime, the Dandys have released an EP \u2013 \u201cRock Remaker.\u201d It is a collection of five remixes of songs from \u201cRockmaker\u201d with contributions from Andy Bell\u00a0from\u00a0Ride\u00a0and\u00a0Oasis,\u00a0Anders Trentem\u00f8ller,\u00a0Oliver Ackerman\u00a0from\u00a0A Place To Bury Strangers, and\u00a0Night Club.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re always working on another record,\u201d said Holmstr\u00f6m. \u201cWe\u2019re trying to get the next one done in less than five years. Ideally, we\u2019ll finish the album this year. I know Courtney really wants to get it out.\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The band\u2019s current live show is a career-spanning retrospective.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cSince it\u2019s our 30th\u00a0anniversary, we\u2019ve decided to add a few more songs from our first record,\u201d said Holmstr\u00f6m. \u201cIt\u2019s fun to play those songs.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cI wanted to play more from \u2018Rockmaker\u2019 but there\u2019s only so much we can do in our set which is about an hour and 40 minutes. It\u2019s become more and more difficult \u2013 too many songs. We don\u2019t want to play for three hours.\u201d<\/div>\n
