{"id":44952,"date":"2025-11-20T09:45:46","date_gmt":"2025-11-20T14:45:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?p=44952"},"modified":"2025-11-20T09:45:47","modified_gmt":"2025-11-20T14:45:47","slug":"on-stage-a-brandywine-valley-symphony-show-for-all-the-senses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?p=44952","title":{"rendered":"On Stage: A Brandywine Valley Symphony show for all the senses"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"elementToProof\"><strong>By Denny Dyroff<\/strong>, <em>Entertainment Editor, The Times<\/em><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\n<div id=\"attachment_21014\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21014\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-21014\" src=\"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/bv-symph.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"233\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-21014\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Brandywine Valley Symphony<\/p><\/div>\n<p>There is an event in the area on Sunday afternoon that will provide treats for four of the five human senses \u2013 sight, hearing, taste, and smell.<\/p><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The Brandywine Valley Symphony\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/bvsymphony.org\/\">bvsymphony.org<\/a>) will present the second concert in its debut season on November 23 at 3 p.m. The Salon Concert\u00a0will be held in the Grand Ballroom of Mendenhall Inn, which is located at 323 Kennett Pike in Mendenhall.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">In addition to the music, the event offers hors d\u2019oeuvres and one beer, wine or other beverage.<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The 2025-2026 season is a debut season in name only &#8212; because of the orchestra\u2019s new name.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">A few months ago, the orchestra performed its final concert as the Kennett Symphony with an outdoor show at Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">This weekend\u2019s concert will be the second performance of the orchestra\u2019s 85th season.<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">It features Tchaikovsky\u2019s \u201cSerenade for Strings,\u201d light appetizers, and drinks. The performance is hosted by Michael Hall with stories, musical examples, and multimedia projections that bring the work to life.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Tchaikovsky&#8217;s\u00a0Serenade for String Orchestra\u00a0in C major,\u00a0Op.\u00a048 was written and orchestrated in September and October 1880.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The Serenade is scored for violins I, violins II, violas, cellos, and double basses. In the score Tchaikovsky noted: &#8220;The larger number of players in the string orchestra, the more this shall be in accordance with the author&#8217;s wishes&#8221;.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">There are four movements:<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Pezzo in forma di sonatina. Andante non troppo\u2014Allegro moderato (C major, 295 bars)<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Valse. Moderato. Tempo di Valse (G major, 223 bars)<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Elegia. Larghetto elegiaco (D major, 162 bars)<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Finale (Tema russo). Andante\u2014Allegro con spirito (C major, 406 bars)<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">A complete performance lasts approximately 30 minutes.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Kennett Symphony,\u00a0which began in 1940 as a small volunteer community orchestra in\u00a0Kennett Square, has evolved a lot over the last eight decades and had two other monikers \u2013 Kennett Symphony Orchestra and Kennett Symphony of Chester County.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The ensemble has steadily grown by using professional musicians and talented conductors. The Symphony embraces its proud legacy of presenting timeless classics to audiences in the suburbs of Philadelphia, Main Line, and Chester County.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">From 1988-2013, the orchestra, which then was known as the Kennett Symphony of Chester County, blossomed under the leadership of\u00a0Mary Woodmansee Green, Pennsylvania\u2019s first woman to be appointed conductor of a professional symphony.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">When Green retired, she was succeeded by current Artistic Director\u00a0Michael Hall.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The 2025\u20132026 season features one special event, one salon concert with food and spirits, three full-orchestra Masterworks concerts, and three chamber music performances highlighting brass, woodwind, and string ensembles.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">According to Hall, \u201cOur orchestra continues to thrive, deepening its artistic excellence while strengthening connections throughout the Brandywine Valley.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThis season honors the great symphonic tradition while embracing new perspectives and innovative experiences. And both are successful actors as well as in-demand standup comedians.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI grew up in New York \u2013 in Queens,\u201d said Scolaro, during a phone interview Wednesday afternoon from his home in the New York borough.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI lived in L.A. for 21 years where I worked mainly as an actor. I moved back to Queens in 2022 to take care of my mom.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Scolaro went to SUNY-New Paltz, where he graduated with a degree in communication.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI had my own TV and radio shows when I was in college,\u201d said Scolaro. \u201cActing was my first love, but comedy was big too. When I was a kid, I loved George Carlin and Bill Cosby.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cStandup is fun, but I preferred acting. As a kid, I watched actor\/comedians like John Belushi and John Candy.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI started doing comedy in 1995. In 2001, I got hired for a role on NBC\u2019s \u2018Three Sisters.\u2019 When I first moved back here, I booked a pilot as a regular, but it didn\u2019t get picked up.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cSo, they threw me in another show, \u2018Three Sisters.\u2019 Then, I got another show co-starring with Pamela Anderson \u2013 \u2018Stacked.\u2019\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Scolaro has appeared on \u201cShameless,\u201d \u201cAbbott Elementary,\u201d \u201cGodfather of Harlem,\u201d \u201cNight Court,\u201d \u201cDexter,\u201d \u201cLaw and Order: SVU,\u201d \u201cBones,\u201d \u201cGrey\u2019s Anatomy,\u201d \u201cNight Court,\u201d \u201cCastle\u201d and \u201cGirl Meets World.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">He also has had recurring roles as Brian on \u201cA Million Little Things,\u201d Uncle Bill on \u201cTen Year Old Tom,\u201d Doug on \u201cSullivan and Son,\u201d Sergio on \u201cKroll Show,\u201d Goblin on \u201cWizards of Waverly Place,\u201d and many roles on \u201cLife and Times of Tim.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Scolaro is widely known as Stuart, a regular cast member, on FOX\u2019s \u201cStacked\u201d and Gordon on NBC\u2019s \u201cThree Sisters.\u201d He has also appeared in the films \u201cAlto Knights\u201d, \u201cScreamboat,\u201dand \u201cThe Brothers Solomon.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe Alto Knights\u201d\u00a0is a 2025 American\u00a0biographical\u00a0crime drama film\u00a0directed by\u00a0Barry Levinson\u00a0and written by\u00a0Nicholas Pileggi. The film stars\u00a0Robert De Niro\u00a0in a\u00a0dual role\u00a0as 1950s\u00a0mob bosses\u00a0Vito Genovese\u00a0and\u00a0Frank Costello.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cScreamboat\u201d is a 2025 American comedy horror film directed by Steven LaMorte. It is a reimagining of Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks&#8217;s 1928 animated short film, \u201cSteamboat Willie.\u201d The plot follows a group of New Yorkers who are terrorized by a monstrous mouse named Steamboat Willie.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI did a lot of TV shows \u2013 and a few movies,\u201d said Scolaro. \u201cI did the movie \u2018Alto Knights\u2019 with Robert De Niro. I had a guest spot in \u2018Screamboat\u2019 where I had my head cut off by Mickey Mouse.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI always knew that I wanted to do acting. Now, I do a lot of dramas. My favorite thing is to do comedy in a drama.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Scolaro has had three specials &#8212; his \u201cDry Bar Special: Trouble,\u201d his Amazon special \u201cI Don\u2019t Know Who I Am Either,\u201d and his half-hour Comedy Central special \u201cComedy Central Presents: Brian Scolaro.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">He has also performed stand-up on a number of TV shows including \u201cConan,\u201d \u201cGotham Comedy Live,\u201d \u201cComics Unleashed,\u201d and \u201cThe Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWith comedy, it took five years to get my set correct and eight years until I was starring,\u201d said Scolaro.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI\u2019ve always been able to read the room and to make audiences laugh. I like to be silly and not deal with politics, dating or family.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWhen I\u2019m doing a show, I want to just be silly. I\u2019ve played 46 state sand my material works everywhere.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Pontillo also started in Queens, moved west (slightly) and then came back.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI was born in Queens and grew up in Long Island,\u201d said Pontillo, during a phone interview Wednesday afternoon from his home in Long Island.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI moved to Brooklyn and lived there for over a decade. Then, I moved back to Long Island.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI started doing comedy when I was in college at Hofstra University. I was studying television \u2013 the behind-the-scenes part. I got sick of it and switched to film.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI tried comedy for the first time when I was in college. Dave Chappelle was headlining a show at Hofstra, and they had a student comedy challenge to pick the opener.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI won. I thought I\u2019d just go onstage and be funny. It didn\u2019t happen. I did a few jokes and the place was quiet. So, I decided to fart into a microphone.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cAbout a year-and-a-half later, I started doing it for real. I was performing at comedy clubs in Long Island and then New York City.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Pontillo slowly built his reputation and his audience grew.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cComedy is all about playing the long game \u2013 and it\u2019s a long game. I never did a lot of open mics. I did do a lot of new talent nights. That was the first time at a big comedy club where people came to see me.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Pontillo appeared on AXS TV\u2019s Gotham Comedy Live, Sirius\u00a0XM, MTV, MeTV, Amazon Prime and most recently Tubi.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">In 2023, he released his second comedy special, \u201cNo One Asked For This,\u201d which is currently streaming on YouTube.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">His first special, \u201cDelete Your Account,\u201d is also available as an album on Spotify and iTunes.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">When he\u2019s not touring the country doing stand-up, Pontillo is a content creator with a variety of short sketches on YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">He also has some self-produced films under his belt such as \u201cStreet of the Dead,\u201d a zombie comedy, and \u201cSocial Media Killed The Super Villain,\u201d which ran in several festivals.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI\u2019ve been doing the TV thing,\u201d said Pontillo. \u201cI\u2019ve just finished a pilot which I\u2019m self-producing. We\u2019ll see where that goes.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cAlso, some of my jokes have been featured in publications such as Timeout NY, Washington Post, the Daily News and on <a href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/\">ESPN.com<\/a>.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Pontillo also has a solid career as a stand-up comedian.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI got into comedy because I want to create,\u201d said Pontillo. \u201cMy comedy is whatever mood I\u2019m in that day.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u00a0\u201cI do biography and some topical stuff. Once in a while, I\u2019m a bit of a ranter. I only have a couple R-rated jokes. I\u2019m pretty clean.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI vary my show a lot. If you see me multiple times, you\u2019ll see me doing things differently from my last show. Actually, I have no idea what I\u2019m doing the next night.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI mostly avoid politics. I want to be there for every side of the aisle. I want to appeal to everyone.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The show at Candlelight on November 20 will start at 7:30 p.m.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Tickets are $40.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The show features cash bar (no minimum), complimentary heavy snacks and free parking.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">On November 26, Candlelight Dinner Theatre will host a concert by New Jersey-based rocker Joe Grasso &amp; The Ramblers.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The show will start at 7 p.m.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Tickets are $30 in advance and $35 at the door.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The Secret Cinema\u00a0will return to Glen Foerd\u00a0(5001 Grant Ave, Philadelphia, <a id=\"OWA97bdd8a4-aff6-9264-d7c5-79267c503931\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.glenfoerd.org\/\">www.glenfoerd.org<\/a>) on November 21 for a one-night-only presentation of\u00a0\u201cEarly Educational: Classroom Films of the Silent Era,\u201d a rare screening of century-old classroom films that once taught students about history, science, and the natural world.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The event will take place from\u00a07:30-10 p.m.\u00a0at\u00a0Glen Foerd, Philadelphia&#8217;s public park and nonprofit cultural site along the Delaware River.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Doors open at\u00a07 p.m.\u00a0for visitors to explore the historic mansion and its grounds before the program begins in the second-floor art gallery (stair access only).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Reviving a program not shown in 16 years, the Secret Cinema will showcase an array of\u00a0ultra-rare 16mm films &#8212; many believed to exist only in its private archive.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">These reels, produced by pioneering companies such as\u00a0Kodascope Libraries,\u00a0Eastman Classroom Films, and\u00a0Urban-Kineto, remain in exceptional condition and often feature original tinted stock.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">They will be screened at authentic silent-era speeds with\u00a0live musical accompaniment by Don Kinnier, Pennsylvania\u2019s foremost silent film organist.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">General admission is $25, and $20 for students and seniors.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWishing to Grow Up Brightly\u201d is a new musical from\u00a0Amanda Morton\u00a0(\u201cKPOP,\u201d \u201cThe Who\u2019s Tommy,\u201d \u201cGutenberg!
