{"id":44982,"date":"2025-11-27T10:10:22","date_gmt":"2025-11-27T15:10:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?p=44982"},"modified":"2025-11-27T10:12:21","modified_gmt":"2025-11-27T15:12:21","slug":"on-stage-the-history-of-renaissance-at-landsdown-theater","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?p=44982","title":{"rendered":"On Stage:  The History of Renaissance at Landsdown Theater"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"elementToProof\"><strong>By Denny Dyroff<\/strong>,\u00a0 <em>Entertainment Editor, The Times\u00a0<\/em><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-21039\" src=\"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/FB-Renaissance-LT-2025.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"266\" height=\"300\" \/>A very special musical event is taking place at the Lansdowne Theater (31 North Lansdowne Avenue, Lansdowne, <a href=\"http:\/\/thelansdownetheater.com\/\">thelansdownetheater.com<\/a>) this weekend.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">On November 29, the popular venue in Delaware County is hosting symphonic rock pioneers Annie Haslam and Jim\u00a0McCarty performing \u201cThe History of Renaissance.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The two music veterans have a mutual music history that goes back more than 50 years.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Jim McCarty was the drummer of the Yardbirds \u2013 one of the premier bands during the initial \u201cBritish Rock Invasion\u201d in the mid-1960s.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Any credible list of the 10 all-time best rock guitarists should \u2013 without question \u2013 include Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page.<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Amazingly, three of them got their starts in the same band \u2013 the Yardbirds<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The Yardbirds are like the Energizer Bunny \u2013 they just keep going and going.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Original lead guitarist Top Topham left and was replaced by Clapton, and then Beck replaced Clapton two years later. It was this line-up that recorded the group\u2019s signature hits \u201cHeart Full of Soul\u201d, \u201cI\u2019m a Man\u201d and \u201cShapes of Things.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">In 1966, bassist Paul Samwell-Smith left the group. Jimmy Page joined, and the band used a double-lead guitar format for a brief while. Then, Beck left, and Page remained \u2013 but only for a short while before leaving to form Led Zeppelin.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">In 1976, vocalist Keith Relf died in an accident leaving the band with just a pair of original members \u2013 drummer McCarty\u00a0and rhythm guitarist\/bassist Chris Dreja. The group seemed to quietly fade into history.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Rising from the ashes of the Yardbirds,\u00a0McCarty\u00a0and Relf envisioned a Renaissance as fusing folk and classical influences with the bluesy rock they\u2019d been playing and giving birth to a new musical direction.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">When\u00a0Haslam joined the band in 1971 to sing with her ethereal five-octave voice, the group became more popular, especially with the progressive rock scene.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">After McCarty departed the band, the line up continued notably with Haslam, this combined the poetic emotional words of Betty Thatcher and the timeless musical masterpieces that were created by Michael Dunford, John Tout, Jon Camp and Terry Sullivan.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">McCarty carried on writing songs for the revised band and collaborated with poet Betty Thatcher, with both providing imaginative lyrics for the songs.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Renaissance was reborn in 2009 with Haslam and Dunford at the helm, along with keyboard player\/musical director Rave Tesar, and a new generation of musicians.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">From 1972 to 1979 Renaissance released seven studio albums, toured extensively, and sold out three nights at\u00a0Carnegie Hall\u00a0with Tony Cox conducting the\u00a0New York Philharmonic.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Renaissance\u00a0has toured throughout the world and has performed at Carnegie Hall with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and at the Royal Albert Hall with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Chorale Society.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Over the years, the band released a number of classic, well-received albums,\u00a0including \u201cTurn Of The Cards\u201d (1974), \u201cScheherazade And Other Stories,\u201d (1976), \u201cNovella\u201d (1977), \u201cA Song For All Seasons\u201d (1978), \u201cAzur D\u2019Or\u201d (1979), \u201cCamera Camera\u201d (1981) and \u201cTime Line\u201d (1983).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Renaissance enjoyed a hit single with \u2018Northern Lights\u2019, that got to Number 10 in the UK charts in July 1978.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u00a0After their great success both recording and touring in the 70s, the band experienced several lineup changes in the 80s, parted ways with its label, and eventually called it quits in 1987.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The group reformed in 1998, and in 2001 the band were back on the road with a U.S. tour fronted by Haslam. In 2024, the band did a well-attended farewell tour, \u201cIn Gratitude.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The current lineup of Renaissance is Haslam (lead vocals), McCarty\u00a0(acoustic guitar and lead vocals), Tesar (keyboards), Mark Lambert (guitars, vocals),\u00a0Geoffrey Langley (keyboards, vocals), John Galgano (bass, vocals), and\u00a0Frank Pagano (drums, percussion, vocals).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Presently, the current Renaissance lineup will end 2025 with their \u201cHistory of Renaissance Tour.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The catalyst for this tour was a show promoter from the Midwest.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cOn the Renaissance farewell tour last year, we did the last two shows at the Wildey Theatre in Edwardsville, Illinois,\u201d said Haslam, during a phone interview Tuesday evening form ger home in Upper Bucks County.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe promoter of the shows was a guy named Greg Moulden. In September, I got a call from him. He said \u2013 when you were down here last year, you really made people happy with your stories.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cHe wanted me to come back and do a one-woman show. He wouldn\u2019t let me go. I said that I wanted music with it.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cAll of a sudden, I thought of Jim, so I contacted him. He had free time off from Yardbirds\u2019 touring and was up for it. Greg was a big fan of Renaissance and also liked Jim\u2019s bands Illusions and Shoot.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The current mini-tour \u2013 two shows in Illinois, one in Newtown, N.J. and one in Lansdowne \u2013 has a show with three segments.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cIt\u2019s a three-hour show that starts with Annie and I talking \u2013 conversing about the band,\u201d said McCarty, who was at Haslam\u2019s house Tuesday.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe chat about the history of Renaissance and then, I do a couple of my songs. The band comes out, and we do a couple Illusion\u2019s songs &#8212; \u2018Isadora,\u2019 \u2018Madonna Blues,\u2019 \u2018Ghost,\u2019 &#8212; my songs \u2018Face of Yesterday\u2019 and \u2018On The Frontier\u2019 and a few Shoot songs including \u2018Sepia Sister.\u2019 We close with the song, \u2018Island,\u2019 which was the song Annie sang when she first auditioned for Renaissance 50 years ago.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Then, the show takes a much-needed intermission \u2013 much appreciated by older audiences.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cAfter the break, we come back with the full Renaissance band,\u201d said Haslam. \u201cIt\u2019s a great show. There\u2019s never been anything like it.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWhen we agreed to do the first two shows in Illinois, we realized it would be really silly to just do two shows. So, we added two. And we\u2019re going to film the Lansdowne show.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe set list for the Renaissance segment includes \u2018Prologue,\u2019 \u2018Ashes Are Burning,\u2019 \u2018Carpet of the Sun,\u2019 \u2018I Think of You,\u2019 \u2018Mother Russia,\u2019 \u2018Midas Man,\u2019 \u2018Day of the Dreamer\u2019 and \u2018Northern Lights.\u2019\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Next year, Haslam might just do more \u201cHistory of Renaissance\u201d shows. Meanwhile, McCarty will resume work with the Yardbirds.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe Yardbirds are coming back in March,\u201d said McCarty. \u201cWe\u2019ll be doing the Flower Power Cruise and probably some dates on the East Coast.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">And Haslam and McCarty will likely be doing some work in the studio together.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cJim and I are working on a new song \u2013 that we started in the 90s,\u201d said Haslam. \u201cI found it on a cassette, and we\u2019ll be recording it next year. Click or tap to follow the link.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.candlelighttheatredelaware.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.candlelighttheatredelaware.org<\/a><\/i>).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-21040 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Christmas_Framed-1024x701-1-350x240.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"240\" \/>The Candlelight just celebrated Opening Night for its annual holiday show, \u201cChristmas by Candlelight,\u201d which is running now through December 21.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">For a month-and-a-half, the Candlelight is treating audiences to its heartwarming celebration of the yuletide season, which is back by popular demand this year.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Max Redman, a longtime Candlelight veteran, is both the writer and director of the new show. The last show that Redman directed was \u201cIt\u2019s A Wonderful Life.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Over the years, he has acted on stage and, for other shows, worked in the tech booth. He is currently Technical Director for the theater.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI\u2019ve been with Candlelight since 2014,\u201d said Redman, during a phone interview last week. \u201cThe show was \u2018Fiddler on the Roof\u2019 in fall 2014.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe current show is my 61st\u00a0show here. I started as an actor, and I\u2019ve been the Technical Director since 2016. This is only the second production that I\u2019ve been the show\u2019s Director.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cChristmas by Candlelight\u201d has been around even longer than Redman.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cMy first \u2018Christmas by Candlelight\u2019 was in 2016 under the direction of Bob Kelly,\u201d said Redman. \u201cI was the stage manager.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe second was in 2019. I played a father in the show as well as being the stage manager.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cMy next holiday show was \u2018Christmas Carol by Candlelight.\u2019 That was our first post-COVID production, and I was an actor in the show.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe other holiday shows I was involved in were \u2018White Christmas\u2019 in 2022, \u2018It\u2019s a Wonderful Life\u2019 in 2023 and \u2018Holiday Inn\u2019 in 2024.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">This year\u2019s show features favorite seasonal and sacred tunes, as well as some new surprises, brought to life by some of the theater\u2019s most popular cast and staff.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Candlelight fans\u2019 favorites in the cast are Jared Calhoun, Maurene Cotellese, Tina Gabriella Delano, Erin Lunde, Tim Moudy, Cody Palmer, Samatha Ricchiuti, Tess Sinatra, Shawn Weaver, Shaun Yates, and Anthony Connell, a longtime actor who also has been Props Master for shows this year.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The cast also has a family vibe. One of the cast members is Tori Healy, a mainstay in Candlelight productions for more than a decade, and her siblings Heather Healy and Dan Healy, who is also the Candlelight\u2019s bartender. Oh yeah \u2013 Tori Healy is Max Redman\u2019s wife.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe keep it in the family,\u201d said Redman with a chuckle.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The production team features Julia Kershetsky (Music Director), Jody Anderson (Choreographer), Anthony Connell (Properties &amp; Set Dressing), Jeff Reim (Set Designer), Matthew J. Kator (Lighting Designer), Dennis Mahoney (Sound), Timothy Lamont Cannon (Costumes), Clayton Stacey (Wigs\/Hair\/Makeup), and Michelle Mattera (Production Stage Manager).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe whole cast is diving into this show headfirst until Christmas,\u201d said Redman. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t stop.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe opened a week earlier than usual because Thanksgiving is late this year. Usually, we start the week before Thanksgiving. After Black Friday, the whole energy changed. Everyone gets more into the holiday spirit.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Redman\u2019s work as the show\u2019s writer started a long time ago.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI started working on the premise for Act One initially about a year ago,\u201d said Redman. \u201cI started putting it on paper in May. In August, I started working with the cast \u2013 turning it into reality.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The show has two very distinct halves.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">According to Redman, \u201cThe first act of our show is meant to be a cozy, comfortable and Familiar holiday story with loads of classic Christmas songs to brighten he spirits of actors and audiences alike.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cSet in a Christmas lodge with two large trees and a beautiful fireplace, the joy of the season comes through in visuals, the story and the music.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cSticking with tradition, the second act is when we no longer elan on a story to create a through line for the songs. We just present to you our version of a Christmas revue.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe songs range from a capella versions of famous songs to comedic numbers, upbeat holiday tunes and classic Christmas songs you may hear sung at church services.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Some of the showcase songs in Act One are \u201cRockin\u2019 Around the Christmas Tree,\u201d \u201cJingle Bell Rock,\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s Beginning To look A Lot Like Christmas,\u201d \u201cJingle Bells,\u201d \u201cSanta Claus Is Coming to Town\u201d and two rockers \u2013 \u201cSanta Baby\u201d and \u201cRun Run Rudolph.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Act Two highlights include \u201cWe Wish You a Merry Christmas,\u201d \u201cThe Little Drummer Boy,\u201d \u201cDo You Hear What I Hear,\u201d \u201cJoy To The World,\u201d \u201cThe Christmas Song,\u201d \u201cO Come All Ye Faithful\u201d and, of course, \u201cWhite Christmas.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cAct One is more of a story \u2013 but without too much drama,\u201d said Redman. \u201cI didn\u2019t want too complicated a plot.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI wanted to feel nostalgic and comfortable. Even the set in a lodge with a fireplace is leaning on nostalgia. It\u2019s a cute story that incorporates parts of traditional stories.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cStarting Act Two a capella was a new thing. Act Two is more into traditional songs.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cAudience members with season passes love it. There is just something about this show \u2013 Act Two in particular. And it\u2019s always fun for season passers to see all their favorite actors.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Tickets, which include dinner and show, are $77.50 for adults and $35 for children (ages 4-12). \u201cShow Only\u201d tickets, which have limited availability, cost $35.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Grammy Award-winning singer\/songwriter\u00a0Peabo Bryson\u00a0celebrates his life and 50-year musical legacy on the\u00a0Golden Touch Tour\u00a0through 2026.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, Bryson will fold the \u201cGolden Touch Tour\u201d into the \u201cHome For the Holidays Tour.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The tour stops at <a name=\"_Hlk214971653\"><\/a>Scottish Rite Auditorium (315 White Horse Pike, Collingswood, NJ, <a href=\"http:\/\/scottishriteauditorium.com\/\">scottishriteauditorium.com<\/a>) on November 30.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Music fans can kick off the holiday season with an incredible night of music from four world-renowned artists.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cHome for the Holidays\u201d stars two-time Grammy Award winner and two-time Academy Award winner Peabo Bryson; two-time Grammy Award winner Sheena Easton; American Idol winner and Grammy Award nominee Ruben Studdard; and world-renowned trumpet player Ilya Serov.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cHome for the Holidays\u201d will feature both holiday favorites plus a selection of each artist\u2019s biggest hits.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">With a soulful voice and romantic duets with\u00a0Celine Dion,\u00a0Roberta Flack\u00a0and\u00a0Regina Belle\u00a0amongst others, Bryson became known as \u201cKing of the Balladeers,\u201d winning two Grammy Awards: \u201cBeauty and the Beast\u201d (1992) and \u201cA Whole New World\u201d (1993).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">But it almost came to an end in 2018 when Peabo suffered a massive heart attack. Saved by the heroic actions of his wife, who performed CPR for twenty minutes until help could arrive, Bryson has a second chance and lease on life.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">According to Bryson, \u201cIt\u2019s surreal. Most people don&#8217;t get to say they&#8217;ve had a five-decade career in anything, let alone music. But what makes it even more special is that I almost didn&#8217;t make it to see this milestone.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201c\u2018The Golden Touch Tour\u2019 is a celebration &#8212; of survival, of 50 years of music, and of the incredible fans who have supported me through it all. We\u2019ll span my entire career, but with a new energy that comes from knowing how precious each performance really is.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">To celebrate 50 years, Bryson will release a new album, \u201c<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Grace,\u201d produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis due in 2026.
