{"id":45284,"date":"2026-03-05T09:06:07","date_gmt":"2026-03-05T14:06:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?p=45284"},"modified":"2026-03-05T09:07:49","modified_gmt":"2026-03-05T14:07:49","slug":"on-stage-serafin-ensemble-featured-the-clarinet-at-arden-gild-hall-show","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?p=45284","title":{"rendered":"On Stage: Serafin Ensemble featured the clarinet at Arden Gild Hall show"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"elementToProof\"><strong>By Denny Dyroff<\/strong>, <em>Entertainment Editor, The Times<\/em><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\n<div id=\"attachment_21234\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21234\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-21234\" src=\"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/cf5d71aa-3278-48fe-98b9-aa8c0cdd692d.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-21234\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Serafin Ensemble<\/p><\/div>\n<p>On March 10, there will be a groundbreaking concert at the Arden Gild Hall (2126 The Hwy, Arden, Delaware, <a href=\"http:\/\/ardenconcerts.com\/\">ardenconcerts.com<\/a>).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The concert is \u201cSerafin Ensemble: The Classic Clarinet \u2013 Works by Beethoven, Mozart, Compo.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The show marks the moving forward of a partnership between the Serafin Ensemble, promoter Ron Ozer and the Arden Gild Hall.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The concert also features a world premiere by Delaware composer\u00a0Peter Compo \u2013 \u201cTrio for Viola, Violin, &amp; Piano.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The evening\u2019s other numbers are Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart\u2019s \u201cClarinet Quintet\u201d and\u00a0Ludwig van Beethoven\u2019s \u201cClarinet Trio.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Performers include Joseph Velez, clarinet; Eric Pritchard and Kate Ransom, violins; Amadi Azikiwe, viola; Guang Wang, cello; and Read Gainsford, piano.<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Serafin Ensemble, \u201cThe Serafins,\u201d is a group of internationally acclaimed performing artists devoted to collaborative chamber music performances of unconducted repertoire.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Serafin Ensemble takes its name from master violin maker, Sanctus Serafin, who in 1728 crafted the violin currently played by Serafin founder and artistic director, Kate Ransom.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The ensemble shares with audiences performances of great masterworks and lesser-known works for an unconducted ensemble of two to eight players. Occasionally, larger works or solo works are included in their programming.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The individual roster artists of Serafin Ensemble have been heralded around the globe for concerts and recordings, been acclaimed in the press, and received international prizes and awards.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe started working with Peter last year,\u201d said Ransom, during a phone interview Wednesday afternoon.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI initially met him when I was the President of the Music School of Delaware and he returned a violin he found when one of his neighbors passed away.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cPeter is very passionate about music. He eventually joined the Board at The Music School. He helped the Serafins with their outreach at the Cab Calloway School.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Compo comes from a multi-generational family of musicians in New York. He is a composer, scientist, corporate veteran, and author of\u00a0\u201cThe Emergent Approach to Strategy.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">After earning a doctorate in Chemical Engineering from City College New York, Compo spent 25 years at E.I. DuPont working in both commodity products and tech ventures.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">He held leadership positions in marketing, supply chain, product, and business management. He was also corporate lead for integrated business planning.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Early on, he came to the conclusion that creativity is a Darwinian process. It was a belief reinforced by seeing the same adaptive patterns in all of his endeavors &#8212; from business and pure science to music and technology.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">After a quarter-century at DuPont, Compo opted to work full-time on writing, developing the theory of creativity and innovation, and returning to his musical roots.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">One of the results of his return to music was \u201cTrio for Viola, Violin, &amp; Piano\u201d \u2013 a piece that will have its world premiere at a venue that is just over a block away from his home in Arden.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cPeter has about three or four career paths \u2013 corporate strategy, writing books and composing music,\u201d said Ransom. \u201cHe\u2019s a real Renaissance Man.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cHe\u2019s retired now and he decided to put his creative energy into composing. He told me he had two flute pieces, and he wanted flute and violin instead of two flutes. I told him we could put it in in a program at Arden.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">According to Compo, \u201cThis year, the Serafin Ensemble is premiering a substantial new piece of mine &#8212; a trio for viola, violin, and piano &#8212; a rare chamber music combination.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cIt is a thrill for me to have these top players, <a id=\"OWA00dc4354-dc6e-358b-2337-72a71a4998ca\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/amadi.azikiwe?__cft__%5b0%5d=AZYm0tga4aWjN5LDJZeXhfgl4ggdu5ISA5HjkQZ7eqBbtI4gRFP0zhEsQtSJ3k6wwwaJRurhja9QHyhFWqwZLrCsvibRx9DgMN6HFaYA_Jp0czXlkdl8vNLRCXqkeuJxddnHBUJtsrdmliZvGYEV3L8vWuXgQvd1Wqs518CiggdY6g&amp;__tn__=-%5dK-R\">Amadi Azikiwe<\/a>, <a id=\"OWA92c11940-0657-383a-67af-db31e1ee0deb\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/kate.ransom.9?__cft__%5b0%5d=AZYm0tga4aWjN5LDJZeXhfgl4ggdu5ISA5HjkQZ7eqBbtI4gRFP0zhEsQtSJ3k6wwwaJRurhja9QHyhFWqwZLrCsvibRx9DgMN6HFaYA_Jp0czXlkdl8vNLRCXqkeuJxddnHBUJtsrdmliZvGYEV3L8vWuXgQvd1Wqs518CiggdY6g&amp;__tn__=-%5dK-R\">Kate Ransom<\/a>, and <a id=\"OWA702f471b-e806-b4c7-e9c6-0e0996b69a2b\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/read.gainsford?__cft__%5b0%5d=AZYm0tga4aWjN5LDJZeXhfgl4ggdu5ISA5HjkQZ7eqBbtI4gRFP0zhEsQtSJ3k6wwwaJRurhja9QHyhFWqwZLrCsvibRx9DgMN6HFaYA_Jp0czXlkdl8vNLRCXqkeuJxddnHBUJtsrdmliZvGYEV3L8vWuXgQvd1Wqs518CiggdY6g&amp;__tn__=-%5dK-R\">Read Gainsford<\/a>\u00a0perform this challenging, but dare I say, fun, three-movement trio here in Arden.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cOh yeah, the larger ensemble will also play a little of those long-hair cats &#8212; Beethoven, Mozart &#8212; maybe you\u2019ve heard of them.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Bringing classical music to the comfortable venue in Arden seems to be well-received project.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cKate was pretty persuasive,\u201d said Ozer, during a phone interview Wednesday evening from his home in Arden where he has lived since 1995.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI figured there was a pretty good audience for classical music in Arden. It also gave Gild Hall audiences an opportunity to hear unamplified music.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cAlso, Peter is a friend of mine. He lives on my street in Arden. We\u2019re both very close to the Gild Hall.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Now, Gild Hall audiences will have the rare opportunity to hear a piece of music performed in public for the first time ever.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI get a sense of his jazzy elements \u2013 little riffs, flourishes,\u201d said Ransom. \u201cThere is a lot of underlying structure to the piece &#8212; a lot of recognizable motives. It\u2019s classical with a jazzy accent.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The other two pieces will be Mozart\u2019s \u201cClarinet Quintet\u201d and Beethoven\u2019s \u201cClarinet Trio.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cQuintet for Clarinet and Strings in A-major, K.581\u201d is unquestionably a timeless musical masterpiece. Written in 1789, it was the first composition written for clarinet and string quartet.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The work was written as a showpiece for Mozart\u2019s friend and fellow\u00a0Freemason\u00a0virtuoso\u00a0clarinetist\u00a0Anton Stadler.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">It found an unexpectedly wide audience when it was featured in the final episode (1983) of the television series\u00a0\u201c<a id=\"OWAcdab24f8-0b2d-d208-732f-79368ea6a0cd\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/M-A-S-H\">M*A*S*H<\/a>.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThis is one of the most glorious pieces of chamber music ever written for clarinet,\u201d said Ransom, who pursued post-graduate chamber music study at The Juilliard School with Robert Mann and holds master\u2019s and bachelor\u2019s degrees in violin performance from Yale University and University of Michigan, respectively.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cIt\u2019s as perfect piece as you\u2019ll ever find. It\u2019s like an opera without actors. A jovial rondo closes the piece.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cBeethoven: Clarinet Trio is just a delightful piece by Beethoven \u2013 and one of his early compositions. The clarinet is the lead voice, cello is bass and piano is the glue.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Video link for \u201cTrio for Viola, Violin, &amp; Piano\u201d &#8212; <a id=\"OWA7dd5f9cc-e53a-4f73-ed79-bb665f0c38e6\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Y5bWdVuWuMg\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/Y5bWdVuWuMg<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The show at Arden Gild Hall on March 10 will start at 7: 30 p.m.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Tickets are $29.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">With Ozer as the promoter, the lineup of March and April shows at Arden Gild Hall features Donna the Buffalo on March 12, Oneida\/Carlton Melton\/Terry Gross on March 20, Patrick Watson &#8211; Uh Oh Tour w\/ La Force on March 21, The Tisburys, Mothman Properties, Ripe Enough on April 10 and \u201cLaurie Kilmartin: An Evening of Comedy\u201d on April 11.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI got involved with the concert series here at the Gild Hall 23 years ago,\u201d said Ozer. \u201cWe do about 20-25 shows a year.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI do work all the shows, but I don\u2019t book every show \u2013 only about 75 percent of them.
