{"id":5594,"date":"2012-12-02T06:00:06","date_gmt":"2012-12-02T11:00:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?p=5594"},"modified":"2012-12-01T15:31:03","modified_gmt":"2012-12-01T20:31:03","slug":"holiday-shopping-my-kryptonite","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?p=5594","title":{"rendered":"Holiday shopping: my kryptonite"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: medium;\"><em><strong>11 months a year, I rule the mall \u2014 but holiday time is another story<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong>By Kelly Hockenberry<\/strong>, <span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><em>Columnist, The Times<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/UTNuKellyColumn.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-5597\" title=\"UTNuKellyColumn\" src=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/UTNuKellyColumn-250x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"175\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/UTNuKellyColumn-250x300.jpg 250w, https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/UTNuKellyColumn.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 175px) 100vw, 175px\" \/><\/a>I am a very skilled shopper.\u00a0 I can sniff out a bargain a million miles away, navigate crowds like a pro and be in and out of a dressing room faster than Superman.<\/p>\n<p>Wanna know what I\u2019m TERRIBLE at?<\/p>\n<p>Christmas shopping.<\/p>\n<p>You heard me.\u00a0 Christmas shopping is my kryptonite.\u00a0 It makes me tired and irritable.\u00a0 And, no\u2026.it\u2019s not because I am forced to buy for others and not myself (because, that rarely happens).<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s actually pretty simple: I over-analyze.\u00a0 I rationalize.\u00a0 I scrutinize.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, my mother and I spent three and one-half hours at Christiana Mall.\u00a0 I picked up (and promptly put down) about twenty things.\u00a0 I just can\u2019t seem to pull the trigger when Christmas is still a month away.\u00a0 Part of this procrastination is based on my theory that retailers will start to sweat the closer it gets to the holiday.\u00a0 However, what inevitably happens is that the item I am patiently waiting to go from 25% to 40% off is gone in the size, shape or color that I need. \u00a0Then, I get angry.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>This happens EVERY year. \u00a0(Totally serious)<\/p>\n<p>I think that the solution may be to do my shopping exclusively on-line.\u00a0 If I look at a picture (and there is free shipping, of course) I somehow muster the strength to put it in my cart and click \u201cPlace Order\u201d. \u00a0If I dig deeper and sole search the psychological explanation for my ability to perform such a task the answer I come up with is dangerous\u2026.<\/p>\n<p>I think I\u2019m afraid to physically hand my money over.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFake\u201d money (a.k.a. a credit card) doesn\u2019t feel like as much of a commitment.\u00a0 Right??<\/p>\n<p>AND THAT STATEMENT FOLKS IS THE REASON THAT DR.
