{"id":6051,"date":"2013-02-06T16:14:47","date_gmt":"2013-02-06T21:14:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?p=6051"},"modified":"2013-02-06T16:14:47","modified_gmt":"2013-02-06T21:14:47","slug":"invitation-extended-to-celebrate-black-history-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?p=6051","title":{"rendered":"Invitation extended to celebrate Black History Month"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: medium;\"><em><strong>CCHS exhibits offer insight into local African Americans\u2019 past<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h1>\n<div>\n<div id=\"attachment_6052\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/700000_1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6052\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6052 \" style=\"border: 2px solid black; margin: 4px;\" alt=\"The Chester County Historical Society is inviting residents to celebrate Black History Month by visiting its exhibits, several of which highlight the county\u2019s African American community.\" src=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/700000_1.jpg\" width=\"250\" height=\"264\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6052\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Chester County Historical Society is inviting residents to celebrate Black History Month by visiting its exhibits, several of which highlight the county\u2019s African American community.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Chester County Historical Society (CCHS) would like to invite residents to celebrate Black History Month by visiting its present exhibits, which highlight the local African American community, including the newest: \u201cOn the Edge of Battle: Chester County and the Civil War<i>.\u201d<\/i><i>\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>\u00a0<\/i>This exhibit examines life in Chester County during the bloodiest war in our nation\u2019s history, focusing on the hopes and struggles of local men and women living in Chester County at the time of the Civil War. Upon entering the exhibit visitors receive a \u201ccharacter card\u201d that tells the first part of one of twenty-five individuals\u2019 stories.\u00a0 These cards include Richard Adams, a member of the Third \u201cU.S. Colored Troops\u201d; Henrietta Cummings, who was born into a free black family and was proposed to by her love before he enlisted; and Joseph Jones, a member of the first black regiment of the war, the 54<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0Massachusetts.<\/p>\n<p>Visitors to the exhibit can search for ancestors in a database of over 6,000 Chester Countians who served in the war.\u00a0 Up until the opening of \u201cOn the Edge of Battle,\u201d only 112 records about Chester County African American soldiers in the Civil War were compiled. Now, through research by archivist Cliff Parker and photo archivist Pam Powell, that database includes 925 African Americans.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->CCHS is also proud to present Family Day on President\u2019s Day, Feb. 18, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.\u00a0 Activities will include a special kid-friendly presentation by Jen Bryant, author of \u201cA Splash of Red: The Life and Art of Horace Pippin.\u201d Pippin, an acclaimed 20<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century African American artist, was a native of West Chester, and Bryant\u2019s new children\u2019s book brings his story to life through vivid imagery and stories.<\/p>\n<p>Another initiative of the Chester County Historical Society is the Traveling Trunk educational program. These \u201ctrunks\u201d are filled with materials and activities that engage and inform students on important points in our history, including early settlement, the American Revolution, the Underground Railroad and the Civil War. On Feb. 27, the US Airways\u2019 African American Diversity Network (AADN), a company-sponsored employee group that encourages an inclusive workplace, will display the Horace Pippin Traveling Trunk to over 600 employees at the Philadelphia International Airport.<\/p>\n<p>The Paoli Public Library, as well as a group of homeschoolers, will be using Underground Railroad Traveling Trunk during February because of its specific link with the black community during the time of the Civil War, and its focus on the Underground Railroad in Chester County.<\/p>\n<p><i>\u201c<\/i>On the Edge of Battle: Chester County and the Civil War<i>\u201d<\/i>\u00a0is open during CCHS\u2019s public hours of 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, 225 N.
