{"id":6957,"date":"2013-05-02T07:00:14","date_gmt":"2013-05-02T11:00:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?p=6957"},"modified":"2013-05-01T13:12:45","modified_gmt":"2013-05-01T17:12:45","slug":"native-boy-earns-award-for-pocopson-native","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?p=6957","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Native Boy\u2019 earns award for Pocopson native"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: medium;\"><em><strong>Henry Roosevelt\u2019s short film earns first place at USA Film Festival<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h1>\n<div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">By Kathleen Brady Shea<\/span><\/strong>,\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;\"><em>Managing Editor, The Times<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6958\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_1473.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6958\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6958 \" style=\"border: 2px solid black; margin: 4px;\" alt=\"Henry Roosevelt, who remembers experimenting with filmmaking during his freshman year at Unionville High, earned first place at the USA Film Festival this past weekend for his short film, \u201cNative Boy.\u201d\" src=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_1473-300x294.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"294\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_1473-300x294.jpg 300w, https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_1473-1024x1006.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_1473.jpg 1756w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6958\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Henry Roosevelt earned first place at the USA Film Festival this past weekend for his short film, \u201cNative Boy,\u201d which features scenes that were shot in the Kennett area.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A Pocopson Township native\u2019s short film about a boy chasing the sun continues to enjoy a meteoric rise.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cNative Boy,\u201d a 20-minute narrative by Henry Roosevelt, 27, now a resident of New York City, took first place out of more than 500 entries in the short film competition at the USA Film Festival in Texas on Saturday,<\/p>\n<p>Roosevelt, who just returned from Dallas, said Wednesday that he was thrilled to get the award as well as the $1,000 check that accompanied it. \u201cIt was an honor, and I\u2019m extremely appreciative and thankful,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Although Roosevelt\u2019s win qualifies the film to compete for an Oscar, Roosevelt said his primary focus right now is getting exposure for \u201cNative Boy\u201d so that he can eventually expand it into a feature-length film. \u00a0\u201cI\u2019m just like the boy chasing the sun,\u201d Roosevelt said, referencing the film\u2019s title character. \u201cThere\u2019s an insatiable need to press on to capture the next goal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->The allegorical film received a standing ovation from a crowd of more than 100 at its premiere last month in Ambler. It features several scenes that were shot locally, including footage from the Pocopson Home, an East Marlborough landscape, and a Kennett cemetery. Roosevelt said he hopes to schedule a screening sometime this month at the Pocopson Home.<\/p>\n<p>Celebrating the heroism of firefighters and the exuberance of youth, \u201cNative Boy\u201d alternates between the story of a retired firefighter who is writing and illustrating a children\u2019s book, and the boy who may have links to his past who is now chasing the sun.<\/p>\n<p>In its 43-year history, the USA Film Festival has recognized and encouraged excellence in film and video arts. The festival expanded in 1979 with the first National Short Film Competition. Since then, it has awarded over $250,000 in cash prizes to top entries in this category each spring, according to its web site<b>. \u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The USA Film Festival is one of about 75 qualifying venues for the Academy Awards.
