Kranz-Carl has retired as head of the county\u2019s Department of Human Services, she will work part time until her replacement is found.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A retirement send-off for a longtime county administrator on Thursday came off good-naturedly a bit half-baked. That\u2019s because\u00a0Ruth E. Kranz-Carl, who has spent more than three decades in human services, only had one foot out the door.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cI had a real good roast set up, but as you know, Ruth is coming back on Monday,\u201d quipped Gary Entrekin, administrator for the county\u2019s Mental Health\/Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities department.<\/p>\n<p>Commissioner Terence Farrell explained that although Kranz-Carl\u2019s retirement began officially on Thursday, she will return to the job next week. \u201cRetirement is not exactly what it\u2019s cracked up to be when you\u2019re Ruth Kranz-Carl,\u201d Farrell said.\u00a0 \u201cWe wish you well on your one day of retirement,\u201d added state Rep. Chris Ross.<\/p>\n<p>Mark Rupsis, the county\u2019s chief operating officer, was one of more than a half-dozen speakers who joined Ross and the commissioners in praising the leadership of Kranz-Carl, an East Marlborough resident who has headed the county\u2019s Department of Human Services for more than a decade. \u201cShe is irreplaceable although we\u00a0<em>will<\/em>\u00a0do our best to replace her,\u201d Rupsis said. Kranz-Carl holds a certificate of commendation she received from Commissioner Terence Farrell (from left), Commissioners\u2019 Chairman Ryan Costello, and Commissioner Kathi Cozzone.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Commissioners\u2019 Chairman Ryan Costello said Kranz-Carl possessed an invaluable skill set: \u201cthe mind of a manager and the heart of an advocate.\u201d Commissioner Kathi Cozzone said she learned much about the inner workings of human services from Kranz-Carl, citing her \u201cpassion and compassion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lizanne Redmond, a supervisor of the county\u2019s Pretrial Services Unit of the Adult Probation\/Parole Department, said\u00a0 Kranz-Carl had served as a role model. On numerous occasions when funding for treatment programs had dried up, \u00a0Kranz-Carl always found a way to make sure people were not denied services, Redmond said.<\/p>\n<p>Kranz-Carl, who began working for the county in 1977, has held a variety of positions, ranging from a drug and alcohol specialist to \u00a0the director of human services.<\/p>\n<p>Expressing gratitude for the tributes, Kranz-Carl joked, \u201cI hope they\u2019re all true.\u201d After 36 years with the county, she said she agonized over \u201cthe best time to retire\u201d and said she felt comfortable that programs were in place that would be continued by a competent staff. \u201cI often forget to say thank you for a job well done,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Human services director retires but will stay on until replacement is found A retirement send-off for a longtime county administrator on Thursday came off good-naturedly a bit half-baked.
