I usually try to avoid this,\u201d he joked \u2013 and then added: \u201cYou guys have been awesome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of area residents agreed as the convoy carrying the Kennett Kings \u2013 the Eastern Regional Senior League Baseball champs \u2013 returned home from Bangor, Maine, where they were runners-up in the World Series.<\/p>\n<p>The crew on the bus, which included coaches, the 13 players, and sundry family members said they were not prepared for the reception they received.<!--more--><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8391\" style=\"width: 217px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/IMG_0777.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8391\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8391 \" style=\"border: 2px solid black; margin: 4px;\" alt=\"KAU Pitcher Alex Pechin shows off his trend-setting Italian shorts.\" src=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/IMG_0777-207x300.jpg\" width=\"207\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/IMG_0777-207x300.jpg 207w, https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/IMG_0777-708x1024.jpg 708w, https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/IMG_0777.jpg 1951w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 207px) 100vw, 207px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8391\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">KAU Pitcher Alex Pechin shows off his trend-setting Italian shorts.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Sue Duerr, the wife of KAU Manager Todd Duerr and mother of catcher Eric Duerr, said they knew some folks planned to greet them, but they had no clue that the scope of the celebration would be so substantial, especially on short notice.<\/p>\n<p>Bruce Mitchell, deputy fire chief for the Kennett Fire Company, said one phone call led to another \u2013 and another. Before long, crews from Kennett, Longwood, Avondale and Po-Mar-Lin were on board for the caravan, in addition to the Kennett Square Police Department, which led the entourage. \u201cIt mushroomed,\u201d quipped Borough Councilman Leon Spencer.<\/p>\n<p>KAU, which stands for Kennett, Avondale, and Unionville, appreciated the effort.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is awesome!\u201d exclaimed Kari Jarmuz, the mother of\u00a0 Drew Jarmuz, who hit .588 in the series, and wife of Coach Chris Jarmuz, as she watched the spectators lining State Street.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook at all of these people,\u201d said Coach Mike Pechin, shaking his head. \u201cI can\u2019t believe it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And some of them had waited for hours. He said they often asked:\u00a0 \u201cAre you sure you didn\u2019t get them from other places?\u201d His reply:\u00a0 \u201cNope. They\u2019re all home grown, every one of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As the players were introduced, the crowd got some revealing insight. For example, many people in Maine thought Joe Zirolli was a ringer: Could a 16-year-old be that tall? They were equally perplexed that Jake Freedman could be so formidable, despite being the ninth batter in the rotation.<\/p>\n<p>One of the biggest conundrums \u2013 the bold blue shorts sported by Alex Pechin \u2013 drew the most entertaining explanation.\u00a0 On Saturday night, after the championship game was over, players from all of the teams ended up swapping clothes as remembrances. All 17? \u201cYes.\u201d The hardest game? \u201cIt was definitely Panama,\u201d said Zirolli. It was Panama that represented the team\u2019s only loss in pool play, and Panama that edged past them 2-1 in the finals.<\/p>\n<p>Manager Duerr was asked how many of the players could make it to the majors. \u201cThat\u2019s a tough one, \u201c he said, citing the intense competition. Then he asked the players to raise their hand if they thought they qualified. Although a couple tried to force up the hands of others, none were waved.\u00a0 \u201cI think a couple have real potential,\u201d Duerr said with a smile.<\/p>\n<p>He said the team set a goal at the beginning of the season: to compete well at the Pennsylvania state tournament. \u201cWell, the rest is history,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Coach Rob Jones, the father of pitcher Andrew Jones, said the group learned in Maine that 17,400 teams competed in the Senior League division.\u00a0 That makes coming in second pretty darn impressive.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kennett Kings earn fans \u2013 and memories \u2013 with series of achievements By Kathleen Brady Shea,\u00a0Managing Editor, The Times Sandwiched between nearly a dozen emergency vehicles with lights flashing and sirens blaring in downtown Kennett Square, the bus driver was asked whether this was an average ride. \u201cNope.
