Miss Kansas may be getting ink for her ‘ink,’ but it’s kind of disappointing<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\"UTKellyRev2Column\"<\/a>Aaaaah, controversy for Miss America\u2026shocker.\u00a0 Let me preface this article by saying that I find the entire pageant industry creepy and sexist.\u00a0 Although, I can vividly remember the excitement of popping popcorn and readying a \u201cscore card\u201d with my friends as a kid.<\/p>\n

But really, when this contest began in 1921, I do not believe the organizers ever would have anticipated the breast implants, stripper shoes and duct tape shenanigans lurking in year 2013.\u00a0 Times have changed.\u00a0 I read somewhere that 40% of Millennials have ink. Miss Kansas, Theresa Vail, fits right in.<\/p>\n

Her statement to the press:\u00a0 \u201c\u2026Do you realize it would pave a path for a whole new audience to compete in the Miss America Organization?\u00a0 Do you realize the stereotypes and stigmas it would break?\u201d<\/p>\n

Ummmmmm yes, Miss Kansas, I believe I DO realize this.<\/p>\n

Do YOU realize that somewhere between Hannah Montana going off the air and the VMA\u2019s, Miley Cyrus decided that \u201ctwerking\u201d in front of millions of screaming teenagers was a good idea? \u00a0After all, it\u2019s just a current dance move for heaven\u2019s sake!<\/p>\n

The tattoos running from Ms. Vail\u2019s armpit to her hip feature the Serenity Prayer and a military medical insignia (she aspires to be a military dentist in the future).\u00a0 Both are admirable concepts to scar one\u2019s self with, I suppose.\u00a0 (We have already discussed my confusion of wanting to brand your body with injectable dye.\u00a0 Baffling)<\/p>\n

It is worth noting that the tattoos would be completely private, \u201cbut for\u201d the bikini competition. \u00a0Let\u2019s just let that soak in a bit, shall we?<\/p>\n

In 1989, the Miss America Organization decided to feature a \u201cplatform\u201d concept.\u00a0 Each contestant was required to choose an issue that, should she be crowned, would be her mission to highlight across the country for 12 months.\u00a0 Good idea.<\/p>\n

\u201cOvercoming Stereotypes and Breaking Barriers\u201d is the platform chosen by Miss Kansas.\u00a0 First of all, there is NO WAY that she is the first beauty contestant with a tattoo.\u00a0 Girls in the recent past have simply covered them with body make-up.<\/p>\n

Secondly, where does this end?\u00a0 Will next year feature lip and eyebrow rings?\u00a0 Ear gauges?\u00a0 Is her platform that pretty girls can disfigure themselves a little bit and still be pretty?<\/p>\n

THIS WOMAN SPEAKS FLUENT CHINESE AND IS IN THE NATIONAL GUARD.<\/p>\n

Who knows whether it was Theresa Vail herself or her marketing team that came up with the idea to focus on her tattoo rather than the fact that she has a 3.8 GPA or sings opera, but either way I find it disheartening.<\/p>\n

Let me know how it turns out tonight\u2026.OK?\u00a0 I won\u2019t be watching.<\/p>\n
